UPDATE sadly the owners of Roosevelt’s - a century old restaurant in the Mission, announced that it is permanently closed 9/20/22.

Okay so they’re closed right now but I hope everyone reading this will give some love to Roosevelt Tamale Parlor (2817 24th Street) when they reopen. They’ve been around for a CENTURY and they’re trying really hard to stay open. My family has been eating and drinking there since my grandfather was growing up in the Mission. It’s got a rich history - I’ve always loved the food and you’ll feel good helping to keep a long-standing local business running.

EDIT TO ADD: In the Mission, earlier in the day? Go enjoy a hearty breakfast, freaking delicious burgers and/or classic fountain desserts at San Francisco’s oldest diner: St Francis Fountain. It’s been around for more than a CENTURY, too! It’s got limited hours M-F 9a-2p and Sat-Sun 9a-3p. Hurry up before it’s too late - I believe it’s being sold soon and there are no guarantees the buyer will keep the diner going. 2801 24th Street.

The Mission also has a pretty thriving dive bar scene. I used to go to
- Clooney's at 25th and Valencia
- The Phone Booth at 25th & Van Ness
- The Royal Cuckoo at roughly Valencia & Mission
- Radio Havana Social Club (it is a bar, not a private club despite the name)
- The Knockout
- Cassanova's

The thing about the sort of divier bars is that the drinks are cheap, and the vibe is both friendly and people leave you alone if you want to be left alone. You can get to know the regulars and bartenders if you want to. Sometimes, depending on the bar, there are dogs that you can pet!

The audio volume is generally low because people go there to hang out, but it is still lively, including on weeknights. It is a community spot, not a happy hour destination.

Probably not the places if you are reading on your laptop though.

Could be culturally, historically, or just an up and coming bar that shows the best of that neighborhood.

Coming from the outer sunset I always had a place for The Riptide. Seems like it catches the vibe of the neighborhood pretty well.

I just moved to the mission and sometimes I like to get dinner by myself. I prefer to sit at a bar, and I'm usually looking for something low-key. Bonus if it's near 24th street but anywhere in the mission is good.

I'm at the Napper Tandy right now. Thought it would fit the bill and maybe it usually does, but between a soccer game and the fog it's pretty busy inside.

Mission bar (23rd and mission)
