Despite that clear meaning, this single comes across as if it’s open to interpretation to some extent. The lyrics could apply to a family member or close friend who is separated by a vast distance, in that sense acting as words of encouragement for them to keep going, letting them know you’re always thinking of them. Take the opening verse for example, “There will be days when you’re falling down. There will be days when you’re inside out… I’m always gonna have your back. So, try to remember that.” At other segments, it’s blatantly about a relationship that didn’t work out, as is demonstrated by lines such as “I remember every word that we spoke; you right here next to me. I remember how we tried and we tried. I remember everything…” Show That acts as perhaps the greatest strong suit of “I Hope You’re Happy”, because it allows the listener to interpret it in whatever manner means the most to them, ensuring it will be an emotional song that people connect with. The message also fits perfectly in line with Furstenfeld’s frame of mind, demonstrating a want – and even need – to make peace with the demons of your past and make sure everything is on good terms, if for no other reason than to know you’re doing the right thing. And by doing so, one could feel at peace. While the single may be infectious and the message behind it is an inspiring one, the instrumentation, while behooving of it all, is lacking in places. The percussion sounds hollow, much like one would expect from a drum machine, therefore, no matter what the guitars, violin or bass do, “I Hope You’re Happy” constantly sounds somewhat barren. It aims for a grand sound musically, attempting to incorporate a bit of a rich orchestral vibe, though the full theatrics of it never completely manifest. Approaching the edge of the runway, it never manages to actually take off, the conviction and genuine attitude that is exemplified by Furstenfeld not being enough on its own to make “I Hope You’re Happy” into a memorable song. It’s enjoyable and even fun, though it doesn’t seem poised to score a top spot in their catalog of material.
