Can you play Red Dead Redemption 1 on PS5

Sony's service - now part of the newly-revamped PS Plus Premium, though formerly the separate PlayStation Now subscription - has been home to Red Dead Redemption since 2016.

Its departure means there is now no way to play Rockstar's original cowboy epic on PS4 or PS5.

Sony quietly had Red Dead Redemption listed as leaving its streaming service if you looked up the game over the past month, though did not trumpet its departure.

The first Red Dead Redemption is now only available to play on current-gen consoles via Xbox backwards compatibility - which, as pointed out by videotech on Twitter, is also where you can play it in up to 4K thanks to Microsoft's more recent enhancements.

While Grand Theft Auto 5 has been launched on three console generations, the original Red Dead Redemption remains an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. For reasons only known to Rockstar itself, it never officially launched on PC.

How many people were still playing the original Red Dead Redemption via PlayStation Plus Premium? Sony doesn't say. But the move highlights how even blockbuster games can become more difficult to play over time without backwards compatibility. Or, perhaps, unless you still have your PS3 plugged in.

Rockstar is now pouring all of its resources into Grand Theft Auto 6, which recently suffered a devastating leak of work-in-progress images and footage.

The action-adventure Red Dead Redemption from Rockstar Games has left the PlayStation streaming platform after six years of being in the service.

The original PlayStation 3 version of RDR was added to PS Now back in 2016, and after the recent merger of the subscription with PlayStation Plus, it became part of the extended PS Plus Premium plan.

The removal of the game from the PS Plus Premium library was not sudden, since the company had previously warned about such plans, but now it means that it is no longer possible to play the iconic Rockstar western on PS4 and PS5.

On current Sony consoles, the game worked exclusively "on the cloud", unlike Xbox One and Xbox Series X |S, whose owners can fully play Red Dead Redemption for backward compatibility.

Red Dead Redemption is no longer available on modern PlayStation consoles, much to the dismay of fans. Rockstar Games is responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed and financially successful games ever made, including Red Dead Redemption. The 2010 western had a familiar formula for Rockstar Games fans, often being referred to as Grand Theft Auto with cowboys, but it took many leaps forward with its storytelling. The writing was top notch and it featured a truly remarkable protagonist with a complex history that players felt deeply connected to. Eight years after it was released, Rockstar Games made an even better prequel with fleshed out the backstory of John Marston and added new characters like Arthur Morgan. For those that start with Red Dead Redemption 2, they don't actually get the full story until they play the first game.

Sadly, it is becoming increasingly harder to play the Red Dead Redemption. The game has been available on PlayStation Now years, but it has been removed from the service. Now, the only way to play the game on current hardware is on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. There is no PC version, there is no PS4 or PS5 remaster, meaning PlayStation fans would have to bust out a PS3 or emulate the game if they wanted to play it. As of right now, it's unclear if Red Dead Redemption will return to PS4 or PS5 in any capacity in the future.

Red Dead Redemption (1) is no longer available to stream on PS Plus/PS Now after 6 years of its debut on the service in 2016.

There were rumors of a remaster at one point, though it has been reported that the remaster has been canceled following the reception of the GTA trilogy and Rockstar's decision to focus on Grand Theft Auto VI. Perhaps once Rockstar puts out GTA 6, we can get a remake or remaster of Red Dead Redemption. Either way, it seems like any new version of the game is years away from happening, if it happens at all.

Can you play original Red Dead Redemption on PS5?

How can I play Red Dead Redemption 1?

Red Dead Redemption is available on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Is Red Dead Redemption 1 backwards compatible PS4?

The very first Red Dead Redemption game is not natively playable on the PS4. It was released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the PS4 can't play PS3 games. However, Red Dead 1 is available through the PlayStation Now streaming service, therefore playable on PS4 that way.
