A film about love, friendship & family
I had the opportunity to see an advance screening of the new Reece Witherspoon flick Home Again.
The protagonist of this heart-warming rom-com, Alice Kinney (Reece Witherspoon), is the daughter of revered film director John Kinney. On a night out celebrating her fortieth birthday with her closest friends, she meets Harry (Pico Alexander), Teddy (Nat Wolff) and George (Jon Rudnitsky). The three filmmakers are newly arrived in LA and set on pitching their short film after a successful film festival. After a very late night out they all end up at Alice's place. Her two daughters, who had stayed at her mother Lillian's (Candice Bergen) that night, arrive early in the morning just in time to find Alice exit her bedroom with young twenty-something Harry.

Amused and delighted, her mother invites the three to stay at Alice's guesthouse, claiming it's the right thing to do and that her father would have wanted them to stay. The three young men quickly and with much ease become part of her every day. They fit right in helping with her two little girls, they listen to her problems, encourage her and all seems grand until Isabel (Lola Flanery) and Rosie's (Eden Grace Redfield) father, Austen (Michael Sheen), arrives unannounced. He doesn't like her current living arrangement and sets out to slyly win his family back. Chaos, laughs and tears ensue.
There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this film. I was overjoyed that Reece Witherspoon played a character her own age. I loved that the age difference between Harry and Alice was ultimately a non-issue. A talented cast fused with likeable characters kept the plot afloat in places where it fell short. It's, however, a fun film to watch and a ticket well spent.
Reece was perfectly cast as Alice, she has a way of making you feel deeply and laugh light-heartedly. I adored little Rosie played by young actress Eden who looks every bit a mini Witherspoon. Michael Sheen was great in the role of Austen, I only wish I could stop the Volturi flashbacks I had every time he smiled. Candice Bergen was brilliant as Lillian but to be fair, when doesn't Murphy Brown kick ass!

Audience Reviews for Home Again
Feb 24, 2018
Reese Witherspoon stars in the lighthearted comedy Home Again. After a drunken one-night stand on her 40th birthday Alice, a recently separated single mother, invites three struggling filmmakers to stay in her guest house, and they soon begin to bond with her daughters and become protective of her when her husband attempts a reconciliation. Unfortunately the script is rather weak and doesn't really explain why Alice and her husband separated, leaving the audience uncertain as to whether they should want her to move on or reconcile. In fact, the film plays it safe in almost every way; there are no villains, no real acts of betrayal, or conflicts that aren't easily resolved. And the comedy is pretty tame as well. An entertaining but forgettable film, Home Again has no ambition or passion to it.

Despite whatever curb appeal "Home Again" might have, its address is squarely situated in the most bland hamlet I've seen in a while. It's the most uninteresting romantic comedy since whatever Adam Sandler's last film was.

Really disappointed. I had read some reviews suggesting this isn't a good movie, but I tend to enjoy Reese Witherspoon's chick flicks, so I was prepared to judge for myself. So many things wrong here, I barely know where to start. First of all, the story, what a bore. Divorced single mum to two girls meets a 27 year old guy. She's 40. Not in itself a problem, plenty of movies with older men and young girls and Reese is attractive. I could buy it if there was any chemistry whatsoever between the pair of them. (There's not). The guy has the presence of a cardboard cut out and the other two mates of his are similar in appeal, which is a problem, because for some unknown reason, this movie is just as much about the guys and a movie they want to produce as it is about Reese's Alice. While we are on that, Alice is such a mum in this. For geez sake did she have to be in mum jeans and frumpy blouses nearly every scene? There's some cloying sweetness around a school play and how the young guys pull through for Alice's 11 year old daughter (please), a brief will-she-won't-she with her jackass ex. Lots of fake smiling and euphoria around the so fun dinner table and this movie limps to a very unsatisfactory ending.

Home Again's tagline... ironically titled "Starting over is not for beginners" out of everything that could have been possible... suggests that it must take a huge miracle to begin starting over. The problem here is that if it would ever be possible, I sure wish everyone that worked on this film that also worked on previous films; this means you too, Reese Witherspoon; gets a head start to starting over their career from their roots. We could easily pretend this film wouldn't exist otherwise in the canonical plot.
Who does Alice in Home Again end up with?
” But he got the part, playing Harry, one of three aspiring filmmakers — the other two played by Jon Rudnitsky and Nat Wolff — who end up moving in with Witherspoon's Alice. Harry quickly embarks on a steamy romance with Alice, a newly separated mother of two. What happened at the end of Home Again?
George and Teddy find Harry staying with Justin Miller, and they all apologize to each other. George and Teddy explain yes, they can do other projects, but the movie is still their priority. Time passes, and Alice continues working on her business, Isabel finishes her play, and Teddy gets a part on a TV show. How old is Alice in Home Again?
Home Again's charm relies entirely on its star, Reese Witherspoon, whose turn as Alice Kinney, a 40-year-old woman recently separated from her music-biz husband Austen (Michael Sheen), is fun to watch even when the character herself feels a little underwritten. How old are the characters in Home Again?
