Aug 4, 2010 (Edited) Looks like someone was a little envious of my car somewhere in the past few days and took what looks like a Sharpie or some type of permanent marker to it. Any idea on how to get it off? People never cease to amaze.

Some wd40 should do the trick I believe. You'll need to wash it off and re-wax that area afterwards. Joined Aug 5, 2009 · 7,720 Posts

Discussion Starter · #5 · Aug 4, 2010 Wow that just sucks! Have you tried bug and tar remover or mineral spirits? I'm going to go try the bug/tar stuff. I just tried a little detailing spray when I first saw it. No go with that. I suppose it could have been worse. One guy in that thread on thriftyfun said he had a giant penis on his hood. I was
happy to find out that Ford Focus', Comcast trucks and Honda all get the same treatment. Joined Jun 23, 2009 · 315 Posts
WD40 as above generally works well on sharpie on most surfaces. Other thing is those magic eraser things, dollarstores or grocery stores have them. http://www.mrclean.com/en_US/magic-eraser.do If not, try ethanol wipes (the type
they use i hospitals before giving injections). We use these to wipe off sharpie off laminated cards every week. Or nail varnish remover is the same stuff, but make sure it has acetone in it (some don't I'm told)l With all of these, I would use it on a hidden piece of bodywork first, like under the trunk, to make sure it doesn't tarnish the paint.

Throwing stars are a close second. I already have a gun, but I don't think you're allowed to shoot someone for writing on your car. Joined Sep 23, 2009 · 3,093 Posts

EEKS! :yikes: I don't think I'd use nail polish remover. Yes, most of them do contain
acetone and that is so they will quickly remove paint. Plus acetone can cloud plastics that have a lot of acryllic (acryllate) in them. I would stick with a petroleum distillate like the bug/tar remover or WD-40. When I read your post I ran in the lab and tried some high purity isopropyl alcohol vs. a sharpie. IPA works great on ball point pen - not so well on sharpie. In my experience hairspray is also better on getting ball point pen out of fabric. Joined Jun 3, 2005 · 14,196 Posts
Next to premium Shell 93, acetone is my favorite odor. Goes great with a wedge of premium gruyere. Joined Jun 20, 2010 · 85 Posts

I would try this on something other than the car first but it sounds like a good idea. Also as the post below says I would try a clay bar heavily lubricated with instant detailer. CA

Dry erase marker... The kind that you use on white boards that wipe off. Get the dry erase marker and draw over the permanent marker then wipe it off with a paper towel. When you wipe it off it should take the permanent marker off with it.
