Wotakoi Plot:

As the name of the show suggests, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is a show which revolves around otakus falling in love. For those unaware, otakus typically refer to people who are shut-ins owing to their obsession with pop culture, so much so that they have a nearly non-existent social life. The show focuses on the relationship between Narumi Momose and Hirotaka Nifuji, both of whom are otakus in their own right.

Narumi is shown to be a petite, attractive, and energetic young woman who has a secret obsession over all things manga or anime-related, and has a particular fascination towards the male-male romance genre. Being an otaku, or a fujoshi to be more specific, Narumi does not have great social skills and her awkwardness and weird interests leads her boyfriend to break up with her. Dejected and heartbroken, Narumi also quits her job and joins another company, where she is reunited with her childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji. Hirotaka is not much different from Narumi, except for the fact that he is an otaku who obsesses over video games.

Although Narumi tries to hide her fujoshi lifestyle from Hirotaka, the latter sees through her pretence when they go out for drinks after work. During the drinking session,Hirotaka advises Narumi to date someone who understands her and is okay with her being a fujoshi. While Narumi is taken by surprise at the unsolicited piece of advice, Hirotaka clears her confusion by telling her that they ought to date. Further, Hirotaka makes a solemn promise to Narumi to be by her side at all times and help her farm rare items in video games like Monster Hunter. Delighted at Hirotaka’s proposal, Narumi readily accepts, and thus the two begin dating. Over the course of the show, the two grow closer, but owing to their awkwardness, Narumi and Hirotaka have a problem maintaining a serious relationship.

[WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD]

Narumi Momose: The main female protagonist of the show, Narumi is a petite and attractive 26-year-old who is obsessed with manga, anime, and videogames. While Narumi loves multiple genres, she is shown to have a particular fondness for male-male romance. Being a fujoshi, Narumi is rather ashamed of her hobbies in public, and as a result, she tries to keep her interests as secret as possible. However, Hirotaka, who is her childhood friend, sees through the pretence and the two eventually start dating.

Hirotaka Nifuji: The main male protagonist of the show, Hirotaka is a 26-year-old who is also an otaku. While Hirotaka enjoys all things manga and anime-related, he is particularly fond of video games and is an absolute sucker for first-person shooter (FPS) games, fighting games, and action games. Being an otaku himself, Hirotaka believes that he and Narumi are perfect matches for each other, and convinces her to start dating him. As the show progresses, Narumi and Hirotaka fall in love with each other but have trouble maintaining a serious relationship owing to their awkwardness with each other and their tendencies to isolate themselves.

Tarou Kabakura: Another main character in the show, Tarou is a 28-year-old who works in the same office as Narumi and Hirotaka. Tarou is attractive and intimidating at the same time, but underneath his mature looks is the fact the he, too, is an otaku who loves everything manga and anime-related. However, Tarou is not as obsessed as the typical otaku and has a life outside his pop culture interests as well.

Hanako Koyanagi: The final main character in the show, Hanako is a 27-year-old beauty who works in the same office as Hirotaka and Narumi. While Hanako, too, has the tendencies of an otaku, her hobbies include drama, stage theatre, manga, and anime.
