Visit Salt Lake City.

A gateway to spectacular natural scenery and a metropolis with the heart of a small town, Salt Lake City will please outdoor enthusiasts and urbanites alike. Once you arrive at Salt Lake City International Airport, getting downtown is simple. Board the light-rail train just outside Terminal One that runs through downtown Salt Lake. The city offers other light-rail lines, bus services, and commuter trains to help you get to wherever you want to go, whether that is downtown or all the way up to ski resorts.

Positioned on Salt Lake City’s center block is the historic Temple Square, a 35-acre area that serves as the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Visit one of fifteen attractions related to Mormon heritage and beliefs, and stroll through the grounds to see the gorgeous gardens that house over 700 varieties of plants from around the world. For other unique outings, visit the Natural History Museum of Utah, a 163,000-square-foot architectural wonder that has an ever-growing collection of fossils, flora, and fauna. With engaging exhibits and over 5,000 artifacts on display, the museum is a must-see as it features Utah’s prolific paleontology discoveries and preserved artifacts.

But if you’re more interested in seeing Earth’s splendor outside of the museums, Salt Lake City is the perfect basecamp for exploring the natural landscape. Spend the day outside on one of many close-to-town trails like Ensign Peak Trail. This is a nice, easy trail that most hikers, regardless of age or experience, will find enjoyable. The views from the back side of the trail are incredible, especially at sunset, with the Great Salt Lake seen off in the distance and a stunning view of the entire Salt Lake Valley below. The Brighton Lakes Trail offers hikers classic Wasatch Range scenery and the ability to shorten or lengthen the hike as desired. While on your walk, you might stumble upon three lady lakes—Mary, Catherine, and Martha—whose pristine waters are part of Salt Lake City’s water supply.

For those up to the challenge, the Wasatch Crest Trail provides a selection of more strenuous climbing options. With its 360-degree, high-alpine views, the trail offers plenty of photo-worthy moments for hikers. But if you would rather get a taste of nature without heading too far outside of Salt Lake, check out the Red Butte Garden within city limits. Filled with precisely landscaped plots, pristine fountains, and lovely pathways, the Red Butte Garden is an exciting place for botany enthusiasts and any visitor looking for a serene afternoon walk. The garden is divided into sections, each devoted to a specific type of plant or ecosystem that will keep you entertained for hours.
