Ground zeroes vs phantom pain reddit

This might sound like a weird question, and the answer might be obvious, because "what!? The Phantom Pain is much, much bigger than Ground Zeroes! It has much more weapons and skills etc." However I actually have seen quite a few people on here that prefer Ground Zeroes to TPP, saying that the levels were 100x better designed, the atmosphere and story were unique and fantastic, etc. Honestly, I'm split. I know it's easy to side with TPP because it is a huge and amazing game, but Ground Zeroes Camp Omega's level design was impecabble. Hideo Kojima and his team managed to set the game in one map, yet we continued playing it for a year.

I also remember the setup and the story. The tapes, the disturbing surgery (which I actually left the room because I heard from fellow fans of the sheer brutality of the scene), the taboos etc. Then there's the mystery of Skull Face... the setup was perfect. And Camp Omega was an outstanding setting!

How about you?

Ground Zeroes is basically the prelude to MGSV, the events setup the story for MGSV so it's kind of important in that respect.

That said, if you ever want to go back to GZ after MGSV, you might feel very limited. I enjoyed my time with GZ but I'm glad I played it first - some of the controls and mechanics change between the two games. Not so much that they feel completely different, just enough that the differences might bug you if you've only played MGSV.

I'd like to point out in advance that I love all of the main/canon games in the Metal Gear series. I'm not trying to say TPP is bad; I have over 300 hours of playtime and am currently working on getting the platinum trophy for it.

That being said, the shift to open-world style gameplay in TPP really rubs me the wrong way. Afghanistan and Africa feel too empty and make it far too easy to just run away when spotted. Not as many actual hiding places but plenty of wide open land to flee instead of having to judge whether to risk fighting or running like earlier MGS games.

Camp Omega, by contrast, is comparable to a large MGS3 level like Sokrovenno: there's some side areas and secrets to explore but it's otherwise somewhat restricted where you can go, with plenty of hidey holes to compensate. There's a few open areas, sure, but you're encouraged to avoid being out in the open.

To add to that point, TPP in general just feels too easy. You almost always have multiple forms of support at the ready for escaping or taking enemies head-on. Fire support, OP buddies, a large ammo/item carrying capacity, and so on. Of course you don't have to use everything given to you, but even without help you're pretty powerful. The prologue is the only time I really felt vulnerable.

In GZ you have a chopper but it's limited in where it can go and what it can do. You have to rely on your instincts and a limited set of equipment just like the earlier MGS games; you can't just airdrop in everything you need like in TPP. You have to break into the armories to get better weapons like in MGS3, for instance.

Overall I didn't really feel there were any "oh shit!" moments when I got spotted in TPP like I did in every other MGS game I've played. The only times TPP came close to that feeling were in the Subsistence and Total Stealth missions, but even those are only like 5 missions out of 50. I just feel like GZ captures the spirit of MGS's gameplay better than TPP.

On top of all this, I also like GZ's gameplay more simply because of the lack of microtransactions and FOBs that TPP has. Don't get me wrong, I like developing weapons and managing staff and whatnot in TPP, but GZ feels more focused.

Given TPP's themes of phantom pain, coping with loss, revenge and whatnot, I wonder whether the gameplay change was intended to tie into the themes of the game. As if Kojima was going for "TPP isn't supposed to be a real MGS game, it's a phantom; an inferior clone of a masterpiece. Given the right circumstances, any game can be molded to resemble MGS."

To summarize, even though GZ is essentially a 45-minute tech demo with a few side missions tacked on, I still consider its OSP-style linear gameplay superior to TPP's.

I do agree that it should have been a part of TPP instead of being a seperate game, but I believe it could have stood up as its own game as well if given a little more attention. It's a shame that Konami/Kojima didn't do more with GZ, but I understand that GZ wasn't where their focus was.

Feel free to offer your own opinions and rebuttals/counterpoints in the comments.

Besides the obvious changes like buddies and supply drops what changes are prevalent in the fix engine between the two games. I know reflex modes time seems like nothing in GZ compared to PP but I was wondering if their was anything else.

While not a huge difference, the UI is refined in TPP, which in GZ looks blocky by comparison.

I know what you means. It’s really obvious in the Interrogations screen

Snake feels all round much more agile in TPP

Only fools wear the sneaking suit during the day.

The dive in gz and tpp feel different. You can easily chain together dives in tpp by repeatedly diving and aiming with proper timing. This is dolphin diving and it allows you to move through enemy territory quickly and stealthily. You can't smoothly chain dives together like this in gz or at least I wasn't able to when I replayed gz a little while ago.

Snake generally feels more heavy and realistic. He isn't as ridiculously fast or nimble as he is in TTP.

Not entirely sure but I think weapons may be more accurate compared to TPP.

The UI is also alot more basic and blocky.

I may be remembering wrong, but I think they changed how Snake's physics work when carrying bodies? He's heavier in GZ than in TPP.

Could be wrong though. It's been a long while.

I think it was just in general, I remember sharp turns being a lot harder in GZ, whilst being a lot better in TPP

In GZ you can end strike combos with throws.

What is the difference between phantom pain and Ground Zeroes?

TPP is the full game, has the multiplayer, more and larger maps, and Mother Base. Originally posted by Tarsier: Ground Zeroes is just Camp Omega, with all the side missions using the same map, although with dividers and walls added here and there I think.

Which should I play first Ground Zeroes or phantom pain?

The Phantom Pain originally debuted on 2012 December 7 on Spike's VGA awards. After months of confusion, it was revealed that The Phantom Pain is actually the subtitle of the core Metal Gear Solid V game. It will be set in 1984, and take place nine years after the events of Ground Zeroes.

Is Ground Zero part of phantom pain?

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a 2014 stealth game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. It is the eighth game in the Metal Gear series directed, written and designed by Hideo Kojima, and serves as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, released the following year.

How long does Ground Zeroes take to beat?

Ground Zeroes' main campaign is a single mission. Depending on one's play style and a bit of luck, this could realistically be completed in under an hour. Others will take it slow, experiment and maybe start over every time they're spotted. Under these conditions it could last upwards of four hours.
