By Rajarshi Gupta: India came to Australia as favourites to dominate across formats. The T20I series ended in a 1-1 draw before India won their first ever Test series in Australia. The ODI series will be decided in the final match of the tour at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where India have not defeated the hosts in 11 years. Show But then plenty has changed for India and Australia in the last 11 years. Australia are no more a dominant force in world cricket and are reeling from the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner. India have made steady progress and are now the team to beat in any condition. Yes, they floundered in the Tests in South Africa and the Tests and ODIs in England but Virat Kohli would tick most of his boxes as the 2019 World Cup comes closer. Depleted but spirited Australia stand between India and history In the ODI series, India have been made to work hard by a depleted but spirited Australia. At the Sydney Cricket Ground last Saturday, Australia's batsmen came together for a strong show before young Jhye Richardson handed his team a 34-run victory despite Rohit Sharma's hundred. In Adelaide, it took the combined skills of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik to gun down 299. Riding high on confidence after their 6-wicket win on Tuesday, India will once again look to their batsmen for a strong show but Kohli will be eager to solve the isssue around the third seam bowler in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah who was rested after his sensational performance in the Test series. Can India solve their bowling issues in MCG decider? With eyes set on their first ever bilateral ODI series win in Australia, India will have to look at solving their bowling issues on Friday. Between Khaleel Ahmed and Mohammad Siraj, the third seamer has gone for 131 runs off 18 overs. More significantly, Kuldeep Yadav went for 66 runs off his 10 overs in Adelaide. The MCG is a huge ground and Sunil Gavaskar felt India could play three spinners and two pacers which meant bringing in Yuzvendra Chahal. India might also consider replacing Siraj with Khaleel. Besides, India have two all-rounders to pick from. Either of Vijay Shankar or Kedar Jadhav could replace Ambati Rayudu, who has so far scored 0 and 24 in the two matches. Without Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, India's balance has been affected. Playing three spinners along with Bhuvneshwar and Shami and adding either of their two all-rounders could solve the problem for India. Meanwhile, Australia made two changes to their playing XI for the series decider. Nathan Lyon was dropped after going wicketless in Sydney and Adelaide; he will be replaced by Adam Zampa. Billy Stanlake replaced Jason Behrendorff who has been ruled out because of an injury. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav's unbeaten 121-run partnership took India past the winning line as India defeated hosts Australia by 7 wickets to register their first-ever bilateral ODI series victory in Australian soil. India won the 3-match ODI series 2-1. Former captain MS Dhoniwas back among the runs as he scored three back-to-back half-centuries in this series. Dhoni's scores read 51 in Sydney, 55 not out in Adelaide and a match-winning knock of unbeaten 87 in Melbourne. He scored 193 runs in three-match ODI series. Greetings and wishes started flowing in praise of India following the historic 2-1 series win.
After drawing flak for playing out a slow inning of 51 from 96 balls in the first ODI, Dhoni turned the tides in the very next match as he partnered with captain Virat Kohli to bring India back in the series in Adelaide where they were chasing a stiff target of 299 runs. And in Melbourne, the former-captain played the sheet anchor role as he and Kedar Jadhav (61 not out) put together a match-winning partnership to chase down 230 runs which could have become tricky had India lost any more wickets in the middle-order. Dhoni for his stupendous knocks in all the three matches was adjudged Player of the series. This was 70th ODI half-century. He also becomes the fourth Indian cricketer to score 1000 runs in ODIs in Australia after Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Peter Handscomb put up a fighting 58 while centurion from the previous match Shaun Marsh managed to get 39. Chahal was adjudged Player of the match.
