STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City charter school application is now open for 272 sites across the five boroughs.

Charter schools are free public schools open to all New York City students, serving approximately 145,000 students from all backgrounds, including English language learners and students with special needs, according to the New York City Charter School Center.

These schools serve students from pre-K through high school, and don’t select students based on their academic background. Instead, parents fill out a short application, and students are admitted through a random lottery. No tests, interviews, essays or auditions are ever required.

Families can apply to multiple charter schools in New York City through the Common Online Charter School Application.

HOW TO APPLY

There are three easy ways to apply to a charter school.

  • You can use the Common Online Charter School Application to apply to multiple schools at once. Visit nyccharterschools.org/apply for more details.
  • Visit each school’s website to download its application or apply online. Visit nyccharterschools.org/school-search to find charters in your neighborhood.
  • Stop by the school to pick up an application or call the school and ask staff to mail you an application.

CHARTERS ON STATEN ISLAND

There are currently seven charter schools on Staten Island.

These include: New World Preparatory Charter School, Port Richmond; Bridge Preparatory Charter School, Sunnyside; Hellenic Classical Charter School, Bulls Head. Plus four Integration Charter Schools in Bloomfield: Lavelle Preparatory Charter School, New Ventures Charter School; The Lois & Richard Nicotra Early College Charter School, and Richmond Preparatory Charter School.

Another new charter — The Staten Island Hebrew Charter School in Midland Beach — will open for the 2022-2023 academic year.

DEADLINE

While charter schools accept applications throughout the year, families are encouraged to apply by April 1 for the 2022-2023 academic year.

You can also contact individual schools for details, as some may extend their application deadline past April 1, according to the New York City Charter School Center.

ADMISSIONS

If there are more student applications than seats available, charter schools are required to hold lotteries to randomly select students for admission. Students whose name is not selected in the lottery will be added to the school’s waitlist and may be admitted if seats are available in the future.

Families can expect to receive offer letters or waitlist notifications directly from schools through the spring and summer.

Charter school applications and lottery procedures are governed by state law and regulations. Each charter school’s enrollment practices are overseen by its authorizer — either the New York State Board of Regents, the SUNY (State University of New York) board of trustees, or the New York City Schools Chancellor.

PRIORITIES

Charter schools are required to offer a lottery preference to siblings of enrolled students and to students who reside in the local school district. Parents can find their district at www.nyccharterschools.org/charter-school-search.
