There are several different food items in Minecraft. The majority of them provide hunger relief and saturation, though poisonous potatoes and pufferfish do exist. However, the level of hunger restored and the saturation can vary widely, making several food options much better than others.
Cookies and bread both need to be crafted and use a similar ingredient. Which one is better?
Bread and cookies: Which one is better for Minecraft players?
At their core, they're both solid food choices, though one does have much better stats. A loaf of bread will restore five hunger points and has a saturation of six. Additionally, it has an effective quality of 11.
On the other hand, cookies do not appear to be as strong. Each cookie will restore two hunger points and has a saturation of 0.4. The effective quality is much lower, too, at 2.4.
However, it's not as black and white as it might seem. Both of these items use wheat in crafting recipes to varying effect. Bread requires three wheat and the crafting recipe for cookies calls for two wheat and one cocoa bean.
The big difference is in output. Cocoa beans aside, players will use three Minecraft wheat to make one bread, which restores five hunger points. Players can alternatively use two wheat to make eight cookies.
These eight cookies will combine to restore 16 hunger points in total. The saturation doesn't last very long, but it's much easier to make a lot of cookies compared to a lot of bread.
Only place I can eat bread is in Minecraft 🤮
Plus, bread can be used elsewhere. It's a great food item to throw at villagers to get them to breed. Cookies are only used for the player's food. It may seem like bread is far and away the much better food choice, but it's a little more complicated than that.
Overall, bread would be a better food item when both are compared to one another. However, when players take into account the amount they can get and the materials required to make these items, suddenly, cookies don't look so bad.

Coming soon!
Let's jump in.
A cookie restores two hunger points (One full little bar) and one bread restores five hunger points (Two and one hef).
A stack of cookies restores 16 hunger points. A stack of bread, 15.
Now, one bread restores six saturation points, which is basically an extra hunger bar. When you, for example, sprint jump, instead of draining your hunger, it drains your saturation.
A stack of bread restores 18 saturation and 15 hunger. Pretty nice, but.. With that, you can walk 13200 blocks before draining all the bread you just ate. And you can sprint 1320 blocks before draining your 18 saturation and 15 hunger.
A stack of cookies restores 3.2 saturation and 16 hunger. With that, you can walk 7680 blocks and sprint 768 blocks before draining all those cookies you've eaten.
BUT! You'll drain a lot of hunger by just doing the above and NOT eating. So, let's account saturation.
With a stack of bread, you can walk 7200 blocks before having to drain your hunger bar. With a stack of cookies, you can walk 1280 blocks before having to eat again. Notable difference. But, this is just walking. No jumping/hitting mobs/running/combat.. etc.
Tl;dr If you need this you'll become stupid in no time!
EDIT: Yes, cookies are more resource efficient.. If you have the time, bread..

As some of you may know in minecraft 1.3 cocoa beans will be a renewable resource that can be planted which can be used to make cookies. With 3 bonemeal you can gather ingredients to craft either bread or 8 cookies. But which one is better? Also is the new enchanted apple going to be worth crafting

Steak. feed the wheat to your cows and kill them for fun because cows are annoying. even better if you can somehow get some of them separated from the rest of the herd and set them on fire... It's more carbon neutral that way. =P
Also, cocoa beans grow so fast you can set up a farm made of like 6 jungle logs and never be short on cocoa beans... there's no point in wasting bonemeal on them.

Meh...I'll stick with bread on this one. It's helped save my life many times on Minecraft. Cocoa Beans, I mean you really can only find them in dungeons, but dungeons can be hard to find themselves. Although with this new update coming out, this opinion might change.

Bread by a long shot. It restores 2.5 hunger and gives 3 food worth of saturation (an invisible hunger bar you cannot see essentially). Cookies only restore .5 hunger and only give .2 saturation.
Edit: Apparently .5 is no longer correct so far as the snapshot...dang it, I want to know if the saturation is the same!

Do you have a lovely bunch of coconuts? Do you have them all standing in a row? Are there big ones, small ones, some as big as your head?

Bread. Cookies don't restore much hunger back.

Cookies, if I'm just eating because my food bar is low, but bread if I'm in mid-battle and my hunger bar is low.

Just build a 50x50 farm and you've got everything you need for the rest of your life!
My farm is only 5x5 and I have plenty.

As of now, bread is better because there is no crafting recipe for cookies. But as soon as 1.3 comes out or if your playing a snapshot, cookies are actually better i think. It takes 3 wheat for bread and 2 wheat + 1 Cocoa bean, but cookies give you a stack of 8 which is overall, 8 hunger points. In equation it would be:
Bread
3w=5hCookies
2w+1c=1h*8Hope this helped!
Please check out my EPIC puzzle map!#12 Jul 17, 2012

3 wheat: 1 bread which is 2.5 food and 3 food worth of saturation, total effective food, 5.5 units of food
2 wheat 1 cocoa: 8 cookies, total that's 4 food and 1.6 food worth of saturation, 5.4 units of food in 8 times the time to eat of 1 bread. At 6 wheat spent on each you end up with 2 bread or 24 cookies (I'm ignoring the cocoa, it grows incredibly fast and only requires jungle wood to grow on).
With bread: 11 units of food. Only needing to eat twice.
With cookies: 16.2 units of food. Eating 24 times required. So cookies do edge out bread, but if you think you spend a lot of time eating with melon, cookies are going to make you feel like that's about all you do.
Edit: Done with the 1.2.5 amount, apparently they restore 1 full unit of food in the snapshots as pointed out by Mattpoppybros below. No idea if they're changing the saturation, so reworking all the math isn't worth doing without all the correct numbers for the update.

I'd just like to point out to everyone claiming that bread is better that you get
8 cookieswhen you craft the recipe.
Also, cookies restore two hunger points (one full meat thing), in the latest snapshots.
So for 2 wheat and a bean, you get 16 hunger points, as opposed to 5.
Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.#16 Jul 17, 2012

Though cookies heal more for a cheaper price, I spend too much time eating 8 cookies to fill my hunger bar. Bread requires less time to eat, and can be easily produced in large quantity with an automatic farm.

Well shoot, that blows all my math out of the water since it restores double the amount it did before.
Anyway, for animal farms, just take a bunch of eggs to the nether and throw them at a wall till you have a few chickens. Back to meat time right there.

Actually, the math is still easy.
6 wheat = 2 bread = 10 hunger points.
6 wheat + 3 cocoa = 24 cookies = 48 hunger points.That's not counting the saturation bar, though.
Also, if you just keep eating cookies, you'll never get low enough to stop healing. If you try to do that with bread, you'll waste food.
Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.#19 Jul 17, 2012

I'm addicted to precision on some things. I don't want to update it for the sake of variation due to the saturation bar and if it was changed, which I lack the patience to test. Not that it's hard, just getting the snapshot to work properly with this computer takes far more work than I want to deal with.
