- Defense vs HP - which is more important?
TheHaggis 1 year ago#1 I know Defense relates to how much damage you take from an attack, while HP refers to stamina, but which is more important? Which would survive longer in a battle? A would take less damage from an attack with the higher Defense, but it has lower HP. B would take more damage from an attack, but has higher HP. Would they both survive as long? Mizznox 1 year ago#2 Depends entirely on the specific Pokemon + moves involved, really. Generally speaking, I'm pretty sure that with small differences the extra HP is probably better (but the majority of the time there will
be no difference) while with a gap that large the extra Defense will probably survive longer. //i.imgur.com/qUAL3fG.gifv |
SRR_Capdown 1 year ago#3 It really depends on the Pokemon, moves and situation. What's the context? Fire Bucket |

- Defense vs HP - which is more important?
So basically, when someone attacks you, it takes their attack against your defense or their special attack against your special defense. The result of that becomes a number of HP points which is subtracted for your HP total. So both of the stats help keep you alive in a different mathematical way.
The ideal setup is actually to have them roughly equal. As in, usually you should work on your lowest stat to make it higher. But HP is good obviously because it helps you against both physical and special attacks.
This website, //pokestudio.altervista.org/defevs.php , helps you optimize your overall HP/defense with effort values, but you do have to know a few things about your Pokemon first, like its base stats.

There is a formula to calculate damage, a pokemon deals. It can be found here.
//pokemongo.gamepress.gg/damage-mechanics
If you just ignore
- rounding
- moveset
- stab
- type-bonus
you can deduce, that a plain multiplication of att, def and sta stat is the measure to compare damage a pokemon deals until it faints.
This is not exactly CP, because in CP, Def and Sta are square rooted before multiplication.
This means, attack stat is evaluated higher in CP than it should be from a "damage done until pkm faints" point of view.
Nevertheless, i like CPs to evaluate attackers, because this formula takes into account that "damage done until pkm faints" is not everything, killspeed matters too, and the higher evaluation of att-stat in CP takes this into account.
Maybe, for defenders there should be another measure, like "defensive CP" to find a pkms position in a gym.
It is annoying and takes long to kill snorlax in comparison to dragonite, whereas dragonite has higher (and from a defensive point of view) overrated attack-stat that gives him really high CP.
Other extreme durable defenders (wigglytuff and chansey) have low CP and therefore are at the botton of gyms what is
sonehow unfair and makes training of those gyms harder.
But if the ranking in gyms will change and consider more defence and stamina stats, wouldn't became much harder to prestige? Edit: I guess not necessary, since in that case Wiggly's gym defence CP will be higher, so the attackers CP can be higher than I initially thought.
CP is just a condensed value of your pokemons stats and level. No more no less. It is just an inaccurate assessment of "how good" your pokemon is.

The only thing matters in gym fights is the attack, defense (including basestat + iv and level in means of cpM) and hp of your pokemon.
