2017 will forever be the year that Call Me By Your Name reminded us exactly what it was like to be young, in love and miserable.

Following its success and awards love (including an Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay), director Luca Guadagnino has confirmed that he is in fact working on a sequel.

And he has recently teased some more details about the upcoming sequel – so, what's next for the gently doomed romance between Elio and Oliver?

Call Me By Your Name 2 release date: When will it be out in cinemas?

It's no secret that Guadagnino is keen to get on with the sequel, and has said that the movie could come as soon as 2020. But six months into 2020 and there's not a whisper of the sequel.

However, star Armie Hammer was a bit more conservative about how soon the film could happen, suggesting that the cast might need to age a few years first.

"So chronologically in the story line, it doesn't happen right after the first one," he said at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. "There is a gap. So Luca wants to wait so that we age a bit more so that gap makes sense, kind of like a Linklater thing."

Call Me By Your Name 2 book – What does the novel have to say?

Call Me By Your Name was adapted from the André Aciman book of the same name, and while there's no sequel novel, the original does reveal something of what happens to Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and Oliver (Armie Hammer) after their summer romance.

The book includes an epilogue in which the characters encounter each other over the years, with Elio visiting the now married-with-children Oliver 15 years later. Oliver also returns to Italy five years after that to learn that Elio's father has died.

As we'll see, the sequel is likely to chart its own, new course through their lives. But Aciman has been working with Guadagnino on the plot, and we know that the movie version of Oliver was engaged to be married to a woman, so some elements of separation and regret from the novel's end could be incorporated into the new story.

Call Me By Your Name 2 plot: What will it be about?

The Call Me By Your Name movie ends with Elio quietly coming to terms with Oliver's engagement. Where can the sequel take our hero next?

Guadagnino has already been dropping details about the plot, which will be set "five or six years afterwards," placing it in the late '80s. And he has some grand themes he wants to tackle in the movie.

The novel Find Me, however, is set ten years later, so who knows exactly how the events will come together.

The director has confirmed that the AIDS crisis will likely play a large part in the story, as well as other events going on in the world at that time including the Gulf War and the rise of Silvio Berlusconi in Italy. Guadagnino sees the first movie as only the opening act in his characters' story – and thinks that he'll need five films to tell it fully.

"The novel has 40 pages at the end that goes through the next 20 years of the lives of Elio and Oliver, so there is some sort of indication through the intention of author André Aciman that the story can continue," Guadagnino told The Hollywood Reporter.

"In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie, and if the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want — and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?"

"I said for instance that definitely Elio will be a cinephile," he continued in a separate interview with The Playlist. "A great musician and cinephile. I think that Annella will be bewildered by the fall of the USSR.

"I think [her] son will be somehow nostalgic of the America he left behind. I also think Oliver will grow up with a beautiful family with his fantastic wife who probably will know about the type of love that Oliver feels for Elio."

The setting will also look beyond the beautiful north Italy setting, with Guadagnino promising the film will take his stars "around the world."

As for Hammer, he doesn't know what the movie will be about. He told GQ: "I've been talking to Luca, but we haven't got into it. I haven't even read the book.

"I know Luca hasn't got a full script yet, although he knows what he wants to do with the story, so I don't know how similar or dissimilar it will be to Find Me the novel. I know if we end up doing it, it's more important for me to focus on Luca's vision than to focus on Find Me. The book will be a supplemental thing."

Call Me By Your Name 2 cast: Will Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet return?

According to Guadagnino, the whole cast is returning. He told Italian La Republica: "It was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie."

By all accounts, Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet had an enjoyable – if emotional – time shooting Call Me By Your Name.

It comes at little surprise that the Call Me By Your Name sequel is in line to bring the family back together, with the two stars' involvement apparently confirmed by Guadagnino. He's probably already plotting how to make sure that he doesn't have to edit Hammer's genitals out of the movie in post-production. Again.

While speaking about the sequel, the director praised his other cast members Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar and Esther Garrel – so we'd bet he was trying to arrange for them to return, too.

As for Guadagnino's frequent collaborator Dakota Johnson, she didn't appear in Call Me By Your Name, but the director wants her for his sequel as Oliver's wife. "She has to be a New England kind of hoochie woman," he said during his New Yorker profile (though it's not clear how serious he was being). "You have, maybe, five children."

Judging by his comments, James Ivory – who took home the Oscar for Call Me By Your Name – probably won't return to write the next instalment. Guadaginino teased a potential screenwriter, saying: "Before coronavirus, I had a trip to the United States to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don't want to say, to talk about the second part."

Mysterious...

Will there be a 2nd Call Me By Your Name?

“A sequel is an American concept,” Luca said in a recent interview at the Telluride Film Festival. “It's more like the chronicles of Elio, the chronicles of this young boy becoming a man. It is something I want to do.” Us too. It seemed the follow up was in early stages of development back in early 2021.

Is Find Me the second book of Call Me By Your Name?

The novel “Call Me by Your Name,” by André Aciman, was published in 2007 and adapted into a movie in 2017. It conjured a swoony romance between two young men, Elio and Oliver, in an Italian seaside town.
