Is Top Gun: Maverick on prime Australia?

Firstly, we just have to say that Top Gun: Maverick is the one movie that you need to see at the cinema.

The roar and bass of the jets, the fast-paced action and of course Dangerzone being pumped through the cinema speakers. It’s truly an experience that is best had in a cinema.

However, if you aren’t keen to go racing back to the cinemas and want to continue enjoying movies in the comfort of your own home then you are probably wondering when Top Gun Maverick will become available online?

Either way, whether you see it on the big screen or watch it at home – you won’t be disappointed by Top Gun: Maverick, which is being dubbed by many as one of the best sequels ever!

Where to watch Top Gun Maverick?

Unlike some previous HBO and Disney movies, Top Gun Maverick is only available at cinemas for the launch from May 27, 2022 and is not available online to stream.

When will Top Gun Maverick be available to stream in Australia?

Top Gun: Maverick isn’t available online just yet and Paramount Pictures has yet to announce any official streaming details.

But fear not as Top Gun: Maverick will eventually make its streaming debut on Paramount+ and we shouldn’t have to wait too long if past history is any indicator.

Taking a look at other Paramount Picture releases, they have been fairly consistent in adding movies to Paramount+ 45 days after their theatre debut.

In this case, we could expect Top Gun: Maverick to be available to stream on Paramount+ around July 11.

However, once we have an official word we will of course update this page.

Will Top Gun Maverick be available on Netflix?

While in Australia you can watch the original Top Gun movie on Paramount+ and Stan (and on Netflix if you have access to U.S Netflix), it will seem unlikely that Paramount Pictures will make Top Gun Maverick available on Netflix once it has concluded its theatre run.

Top Gun: Maverick takes place 30 years after the events of Top Gun and sees Tom Cruise come back as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to the Top Gun school to train a new group of pilots for an almost impossible and dangerous mission.

Joining Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick is Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.

It’s no surprise that Tom Cruise reprises his role as the courageous pilot, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Val Kilmer also returned for the sequel and played Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky once again. Cruise actually insisted that Kilmer return to Top Gun: Maverick and was adamant a sequel wasn’t possible without him. In 2021, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told People that Cruise was a “driving force” in getting Kilmer for the film.

“We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he’s going to make another Top Gun, Val had to be in it,” he said.

Along with Cruise and Kilmer, Top Gun: Maverick also stars Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Ed Harris, Monica Barbaro, Charles Parnell and Miles Teller as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw who — spoiler — died in the original Top Gun movie.

The Top Gun: Maverick screenplay was written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie. The film was produced by Cruise himself, Bruckheimer, McQuarrie and David Ellis. The music is by German composers Harold Faltermeyer, who worked on the original Top Gun movie’s score, and Hans Zimmer, the brains behind some of the most outstanding film scores of all time including Gladiator, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk and, most recently, Dune.

The Plot

Top Gun: Maverick takes place more than thirty years after the first Top Gun film. Maverick is training top gun graduates for a specialised mission and encounters Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw — played by Miles Teller — the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) Lt. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Maverick is forced to face the ghosts of his past as well as his own deepest fears while embarking on one of the most challenging missions while making the ultimate sacrifice.

Let's not mince our words: Top Gun: Maverick is a special movie. Tom Cruise's long-awaited return as aging flying ace Pete "Maverick" Mitchell won over critics and audiences alike – we gave the film five stars in our glowing review – and served as a timely reminder that Marvel movies aren’t the only order of the day when it comes to contemporary big-screen success stories.

Not only did Top Gun: Maverick end up being one of the most accomplished Hollywood sequels of all time, but it also became the biggest movie of 2022 and the first of Cruise's 40-year career to break $1 billion at the global box office.

It’s no wonder, then, that fans are eager to learn when they can enjoy the film's aerial dramatics from the comfort of their own homes, and below, we answer the question on everybody's lips: when is Top Gun Maverick streaming?

Top Gun: Maverick VOD release date

Let's kick of with the movie's video-on-demand (VOD) availability. Top Gun: Maverick flew into theaters on May 27, 2022, but the film performed so well for so long that its parent studio, Paramount, opted to keep it playing in theaters until deep into October.

Top Gun: Maverick finally became available to purchase on VOD streaming services on August 23, 2022 – some 91 days after its theatrical debut. You can now buy the movie on Apple TV (opens in new tab), Vudu (opens in new tab), Amazon (opens in new tab) and other VOD platforms for $19.99 /£13.99, which is a pretty good deal considering the typical download price of blockbuster films in recent years.

If you want to watch Top Gun: Maverick from a physical disc, the movie's Blu-Ray release date rolled around on November 1, 2022, meaning it's now available to purchase in most regions.

Top Gun: Maverick Paramount Plus release date

After months of silence, Paramount has now finally confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick will land exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US, UK and Australia on December 22, 2022. The movie's UK streaming release date was announced back in October, before Paramount followed up with confirmation of its identical US release date in November.

Ever the defender of the cinematic experience, the film's star, Tom Cruise, wholeheartedly resisted the temptation to release Top Gun: Maverick straight onto streaming services following a spate of pandemic-related delays stretching right back to June 2019.

Asked during the 2022 Cannes film festival whether he'd ever considered debuting the movie on streamers, Cruise simply said: “That’s not going to happen. Ever. I make movies for the big screen.”

And boy, did the actor's resistance pay off for Paramount. At the time of writing, Top Gun: Maverick has collected an almighty $1.45 billion at the global box office, a figure that puts the film 11th on the list of highest-grossing movies of all time. In the years since the onset of the global pandemic, only Spider-Man: No Way Home has scooped more money. It's no wonder, then, that Cruise and Paramount opted to extend Top Gun: Maverick's theatrical run for as long as they did.

So, to clarify: while the movie is now available to purchase on several VOD streamers, Top Gun: Maverick is coming to Paramount Plus in the US, UK and Australia on December 22, 2022.

Incidentally, Paramount Plus is now available in more regions than ever. The service recently launched in the UK, having debuted in the US last year, and costs $9.99 / £6.99 per month (or $4.99 per month for ad-supported viewing, if you’re in the US).

In our opinion, though, Paramount Plus isn’t yet able to compete with the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus – and studio executives will be hoping that Top Gun: Maverick changes that reality come December.
