Red, White and Blue movie Netflix

Prepare to fall for one of the most beloved love stories of the 21st century because Red, White & Royal Blue, the queer romance novel from author Casey McQuiston, is headed to the big screen. Upon its release in 2019, the book quickly landed on the New York Times bestseller list, and soon after, was picked up for an on-screen adaptation by Amazon Studios.

Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex Claremont-Diaz — the handsome, charming Mexican-American son of the President of the United States — who harbors a long-standing feud with Prince Henry of England. When their animosity for one another hits the tabloids, the two are forced to feign friendship for the sake of amicable U.S.-British relations. But the line between fiction and reality begins to blur as Alex and Henry spend more time together, discover who the other really is, and ultimately, fall in love. But as Alex’s mother’s re-election nears, the two are faced with the decision of keeping their relationship a secret, or revealing their love to the world.

Matthew López, an acclaimed playwright and writer, has been tapped to direct the film. Can’t wait for its debut? Read before you watch and catch up on Alex and Henry’s love story with McQuiston’s novel, available in paperback, hardcover, and audio on Amazon.

Amazon Studios has officially cast Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry of England. On June 2, Deadline revealed that Uma Thurman would play President Ellen Claremont, Alex's mom. The outlet notes that Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Aneesh Sheth, Polo Morín, Ahmed Elhaj, and Akshay Khanna have also been cast. Still, the details of their characters have not been disclosed.

And the cast continues to expand. On July 13, Variety reported that Sharon D Clarke, Thomas Flynn, and Malcolm Atobrah have also joined the romantic comedy's lineup. As noted earlier, Matthew López will direct.

“It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon, and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life,” author Casey McQuiston told Deadline. “This casting is no exception. I absolutely can’t wait to see Taylor and Nicholas on screen as Alex and Henry.”

“Meeting with and auditioning literally hundreds of actors over these past several months has been a painstaking labor of love that has brought us this diverse and extraordinary cast, led so fantastically by Nick and Taylor,” López added. “I cannot wait for the fans of the book (and indeed for the world) to find out how remarkably gifted and perfect these two actors are for bringing Henry and Alex to life.”
