Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2024

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame may be all about the past. But let's look ahead to the future.

The Rock Hall is sure to change during its next 35 years. The lines between genres have blurred and artists you wouldn't traditionally see considered will almost certainly make a ballot or two.

With nominations due in the coming weeks, our list of Rock Hall Futures focuses on artists that either just became eligible this year or will become eligible in the future. An artist is eligible for induction 25 years after their first official release.

We ranked acts like Eminem, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Weezer based on how likely we think they'll eventually earn induction.

Some seem like no-brainers, while others may feel a curveball, which the Rock Hall has been known to throw a time or two.

1. Foo Fighters

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2020 (for 2021 Induction Ceremony)

Why they'll get in: Foo Fighters are not the most accomplished artist on this list. They're also not a better band than snubs like Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden or Smashing Pumpkins, who can't seem to get into the Rock Hall. But what Dave Grohl and company check EVERY box required for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They've carried the torch  for rock music over the past decade. The mainstream appeal is there. So is longevity, as well as a Rock Hall-centric backstory with Nirvana. Plus, Grohl has been on board with the Rock Hall seemingly forever.

Why they might not: If, for some reason, the Nominating Committee decides to load the ballot with an abundance of 1990s rock acts moving forward, votes could get split.

2. Jay-Z

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2020

Why he'll in: The Nominating Committee seems intent on nominating one hip hop act each year. They'll have an easy choice next year. By now, Jay-Z is the consensus greatest rapper of all time. He also defies the genre as a mogul and one of the biggest stars in the world. He's sold more than $125 million and has won 22 Grammys. He's also married to Beyonce (Hello, superstar presenter!). Side note: You'd have to go pretty far back to find a potential first-ballot Hall of Famer as close to their prime as Jay-Z still is.

Why he might not: If The Notorious B.I.G. is nominated this year, but fails to get in, it could complicate things. Does the Nominating Committee put Biggie (or something else) on the ballot one more time before bringing Jay-Z into the mix?

3. The White Stripes

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2024

Why they'll get in: The perfect mix of critical acclaim and mainstream success. You can consider all six of The White Stripes' studio albums essential. The band was a throwback act that mixed elements of Led Zeppelin and The Sonics. Voters will love that. But what makes this a sure thing is what Jack White has done on his own. His solo career (which we'll get to in a minute) would certainly be on the mind of the voters, as will his commitment to old-school f rock and roll through Third Man Records.

Why they might not: Maybe they're too indie? Though, the success of "Elephant" and its single "Seven Nation Army" seems to put that argument to rest. It's worth pointing out voters have failed to put in several worthy bands that influenced The White Stripes, including MC5 and The New York Dolls.

4. Eminem

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2021

Why he'll get in: The most successful rapper of all time. What's to debate? The Rock Hall has already showed Eminem love, tapping him to induct Run-DMC in 2009. It would be shocking to see the Nominating Committee not support a critically acclaimed artist who has two diamond-selling albums, an Oscar and been nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys three times.

Why he might not: Eminem was controversial, especially early in his career. Some voters may hold some of his lyrics against him.

5. Lady Gaga

Don't Edit

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2033

Why she'll get in: There's a clear parallel here for Lady Gaga's induction -- Madonna. They're very similar in terms of style of music, impact on culture and their ability to push the boundaries of pop. There's also the fact that Gaga, who has already put forth an impressive career, has several years left before she's eligible. Who knows what else she'll do in that time? Maybe another Academy Award?

Why she might not: Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have been, perhaps, too pop to earn nominations so far. Gaga could fall victim to that as well. Though, she's likely to get more consideration for his status as a "performer."

6. Arcade Fire

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2028

Why they'll get in: Indie or not, Arcade Fire's discography (save for 2017's polarizing "Everything Now") is impressive. "Funeral" is considered one of the most important albums of the 21st Century, while "The Suburbs" earned the band a shocking Album of the Year win at the Grammys. Arcade Fire is one of the most respected acts in music and the band's concerts are the stuff of legend.

Why they might not: Is Arcade Fire mainstream enough? That's the only question. The Rock Hall's voter base is old-school, full of people who have listened to way more Def Leppard than anything Arcade Fire has put out.

7. Beyonce

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2028

Why she'll get in: When Beyonce's solo career began, you would have classified her as a long shot to ever make a list like this. She was a squeaky clean pop star who didn't write most of her own songs. But the past decade has seen Beyonce become an artistic force as respected as any act in popular music. Critical acclaim, platinum plaques and Grammy nominations have followed. It's likely she'll release a few more albums on par with "Lemonade" before she's eligible for the Rock Hall, which should only aid her case. And, how many acts on this list have had their own high-profile Rock Hall exhibit already? Consider it a done deal.

Why she might not: You could make the case that Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross (solo) and Tina Turner (solo) should all be inducted before Beyonce. The fact they haven't does give you pause.

8. Taylor Swift

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2031

Why she'll get in: No artist screams larger than life more than Taylor Swift. But it's not just about selling records. Swift is regarded as one of the best songwriters of her generation (maybe of all time). Her seamless move from country to pop was impressive. As is her winning Album of the Year at the Grammys multiple times, something only five other artists have accomplished.

Why she might not: Swift has yet to make her artistic album, which is something every pop star does at some point. A stellar one could solidify her chances even more.

9. The Notorious B.I.G.

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2019

Why he'll get in: Biggie is the most skilled rapper in hip-hop history. Of course, you need more than that to make the Rock Hall. The Notorious B.I.G. is a household name with massive hits. It also helps that his career can't be talked about without mentioning 2pac, a recent first-ballot Hall of Famer. The Rock Hall museum also seems to be begging for Biggie to be inducted. His outfits have been featured in exhibits for quite some time.

Why he might not: The biggest difference between 2pac and Biggie is longevity. Biggie only released two proper albums during his short life. Of course, in the world of Rock and Roll, dying young isn't exactly new.

10. Adele

Don't Edit

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2032

Why she'll get in: Three albums into her career and A LOT of Grammys and records sold. Much like Lady Gaga, Adele also has a nice Rock Hall comparison to make. She's the modern day Dusty Springfield, bringing blue-eyed soul to the masses on both sides of the Atlantic.

Why she might not: Releasing albums more frequently would be nice. But Adele's biggest obstacle when it comes to Rock Hall Induction is potential classification as a crooner. It's what has kept the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett out. The same goes for several pop divas. Still, if the Rock Hall chooses to look at her more like a Dusty Springfield or a Neil Diamond type, she's a shoe-in.

11. Oasis

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2019

Why they'll get in: Being the biggest rock band in the world at a given time matters. And that's what Oasis was for about two year stretch in the 1990s. It didn't last long. But you could also say the same for Guns N' Roses. And while similar Britpop acts like Pulp and Blur haven't gotten much consideration, Oasis was bigger than them, especially in the United States. The band probably might not make the ballot this year, but should at some point down the line.

Why the might not: The biggest concern is that voters rejected The Smiths multiple times. That's a band that will probably have to earn induction before the Nominating Committee turns its attention to Oasis.

12. Kanye West

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2028

Why he'll get in: Kanye West may have the best resume of any hip-hop artist ever; maybe even any music act of his generation. And despite his controversial nature, he is widely considered by critics to be a musical genius. In terms of body of work, West seems Rock Hall bound. But...

Why he might not: He's not very likable and likability matters. The Nominating Committee might not care. But voters would certainly shy away from a guy a guy President Obama called a jackass. Kanye may be to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame what Terrell Owens was to the Pro Football Hall of Fame...before he got in.

13. Wilco

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2019

Why they'll get in: Wilco is one of the quieter acts that just became eligible this year. But the band is universally loved. If you're looking at American bands that have impacted the alternative rock genre over the past 25 years, Wilco and Jeff Tweedy (a central figure in alt-country genre) are at the top of the list. Early on, some critics called Wilco the "American Radiohead." If that moniker fits, so does an eventual Rock Hall Induction.

Why they might not: Wilco is not as big as Radiohead. That's not an insult. Just a fact. And the band's modest nature could hurt it with voters who like flashier names.

14. Daft Punk

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2019

Why they'll get in: When it comes electronic music, few are bigger than Daft Punk, especially in modern times. And while artists like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode have failed to earn induction, Daft Punk has accomplished more in mainstream circles than those artists, including an important Album of the Year win at the Grammys.

Why they might not: It's still dance music. It's just a matter of if the voters think Daft Punk is more in the spirit of Kraftwerk (who, again, hasn't gotten in) or defies the genre like Donna Summer.

Don't Edit

15. Lauryn Hill

Don't Edit

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2023

Why she'll get in: Lauryn Hill is the kind of high-brown choice the Nominating Committee and voters love. Yes, she only has one solo album. But an unspoken inclusion of the Fugees' accomplishments is inevitable. Hill is an artist who broke down barriers for black women in modern mainstream music, was rapping and singing way before Drake, and whose influence can be felt in other artists that will eventually earn Rock Hall considering, such as Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Adele and Kanye West.

Why she might not: If only Hill had kept making music. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" is a classic. But the fact it's her only solo album might be the one knock against her. Of course, there's still time (fingers crossed).

16. The Strokes

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2026

Why they get in: Few acts have impacted music in such a short period of time as The Strokes did in 2001. They were everyone's favorite band after the release of "Is This It," leading a post-punk revival that helped reshape modern rock and roll. The Strokes' run didn't last long and you could argue "Is This It" was the band's only essential album. But it remains one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 21st Century.

Why they might not: The Strokes seem bigger than they actually were. If the Nominating Committee or voters dig into that, they might pass. Still, impact is impact.

Don't Edit

Don't Edit

17. Amy Winehouse

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2028

Why she gets in: Amy Winehouse died at the infamous age of 27, leaving behind just one essential album. But her impact was huge. Without Winehouse's success with 2006's "Back to Black," we might not have Adele, Lana Del Rey or Ellie Goulding. Her influence is likely to be felt more and more as time goes on with critics adoring the fact that she merged genres like R&B, jazz and blue-eyed soul.

Why she might not: Yes, she died at the tragic rock and roll of 27. But did she leave behind the same kind of legacy as a Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Kurt Cobain?

Don't Edit

18. Coldplay

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2023

Why they'll get in: In terms of mainstream appeal, perhaps no band of the 2000s matches Coldplay. And while the band is a bit of a punchline, there was a time where Coldplay was a critical darling, especially on its first few albums. Since that time, Coldplay has become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, maintaining that status for a decade and a half.

Why they might not: Coldplay isn't cool. And rock and roll is supposed to be cool. It's the same thing that has kept artists like Huey Lewis & the News, REO Speedwagon, Kook and the Gang and Foreigner off ballots.

Don't Edit

19. Kendrick Lamar

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2034

Why he'll get in: There's still a lot to be heard from Kendrick Lamar, which is kind of the point. His resume and status as an influencer has already been cemented at the age of 32. He has, arguably, three essential albums and continues to make brilliant music. When Lamar is eligible for the Rock Hall, he could conceivably (and probably will) have a better resume than artists like Jay-Z, Biggie, 2pac and Eminem have now.

Why he might not: It took voters a few tries to put N.W.A. in. We'll have to see how far they've come.

20. The Black Keys

Don't Edit

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2027

Why they'll get in: The Black Keys maybe aren't quite as revered as The White Stripes or Foo Fighters. But they're still a rock band that's accomplished big things in an era when some claim mainstream rock is dead. The Black Keys have always had the critical acclaim. But since 2010's "Brothers," the band's record sales and chart success has matched it. Add in side projects and production work for bonus points.

Why they might not: By the time The Black Keys are eligible for the Rock Hall, they'll likely be on a long list of worthy rock acts that haven't gotten in. And they won't be at the front of it.

21. Justin Timberlake

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2027

Why he'll get in: Who doesn't love Justin Timberlake? That's the question that will be asked in 2027, when JT becomes eligible. Yes, he was in a boyband. But he's gone on to become of the biggest artists in pop music history with the critically acclaimed albums to boot. As ironic as it is, Janet Jackson's recent induction bodes well for this type of artist.

Why he might not: JT is far from original. Everything he's done has pretty much done before on more creative levels by Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown and others. Fair or unfair, some may also see him as a culture vulture.

22. Jack White (solo)

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2037

Why he'll get in: No. Your eyes aren't fooling you. This is the second time Jack White appears on this list. Only, this time it's as a solo artist. Regardless of what you think of him personally, White's the kind of figure Rock Hall voters love. He has released just three solo albums, but isn't eligible until 2037. White's impressive side-projects will only add to his resume.

Why he might not: It's getting harder to be inducted twice. Will Jack White's solo career put him on the level of a Neil Young or Eric Clapton? On the flip side, if the bar is more Jeff Beck or Stevie Nicks, it could definitely happen.

23. Weezer

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2019

Why they'll get in: There are many who would have Weezer higher up on this list. And taking into account the band's first few albums, that makes sense. Weezer has songs everyone knows, carrying the power-pop torch for Rock Hall Inductees like The Cars and Cheap Trick. If the Nominating Committee and voters are looking for more "rock" acts from the 1990s, Weezer's name will come up.

Why they might not: There are several great power pop bands that have never been nominated for the Rock Hall, including Big Star, who should certainly earn induction before Weezer.

Don't Edit

24. John Mayer

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2024

Why he'll get in: John Mayer just feels like a Rock Hall Inductee. There isn't anything necessarily on his resume that screams at you. His albums are solid and his status as a rock star tends to be associated with who he has dated. Maybe it's his guitar playing (He's a mesmerizing blues performer), the fact that he's in Dead & Company or his impressive Grammy wins. Mayer won't lack for artist support if he makes a ballot. And there have certainly been weirder nominees.

Why he might not: Mayer would probably do well with voters. But he has to get nominated first. The committee would have to justify the choice of Mayer over more deserving acts.

25. Arctic Monkeys

Don't Edit

Eligible: 2030

Why they'll get in: What puts Arctic Monkeys ahead of other artists who could have occupied this final spot? Consistency and time left. The band debuted as one of the most hyped British acts since The Beatles. Then came solid album after solid album before finally earning a platinum effort in the U.S. with 2013's "AM." That will score big points with Rock Hall voters. As will the band's willingness to branch out into different directions on its latest album. If that continues, Arctic Monkeys' resume will only get stronger.

Why they might not: There's a thought that the Nominating Committee isn't high on British bands post the 1960s. That's not necessarily true. But yes, maybe a band like Blur is more deserving.
