Hair Sculpting | defined as the artistic carving ore removing hair lengths to create various forms and shapes |
abstract | the hair is viewed as if it is standing straight out from the head in order to identify the structure and how it was created |
detail | identify the detail in the texture or surface appearance |
basic | identify the basic form or shape by simply observing the outer boundary or silhouette known as the form line |
structure | arrangement of lengths across the curves of the head |
structure graphic | diagram that provides an abstract view of the length arrangement to scale and proportion. Serves as blueprint for final graphic. |

Natural fall | hair as the lengths lay or fall naturally over the curves of the head, describes the length or level to which the hair falls on the anatomy such as the ear lobe, chin or neck |

Four Basic Forms are | solid, graduated, increase-layered, uniformly layered |
weight | created by the concentration of length within a given area. |
solid form | consists of lengths that progress from shorter in the exterior to longer in the interior. 0 degree cut |
solid form characteristics | blue, rectangle, unactivated, shorter exterior progressing to longer interior, maximum weight develops at the form line to the same level |
graduated form | consists of shorter exterior lengths that gradually progress toward longer interior lengths 45 degree angle cut |
graduated form characteristics | yellow, triangle, unactivated/activated, short exterior gradually progressing to longer interior, weight is found above the perimeter form line, where the unactivated and activated textures meet. |
increase-layered form | consist of shorter interior lengths that progress toward longer exterior lengths. |
increase-layered form characteristics | red, oval, activated, shorter interior progressing to longer exterior, no concentration of weight since lengths disperse across the curves of the head. |
uniformly layered form | has consistent lengths throughout the design 90 degree cut. |
uniformly layered form characteristics | green, circular, activated, same length throughout, no concentration of weight since lengths disperse across the curves of the head |
Gradation | color-coded yellow, is a very short version of the graduated form. shorter exterior lengths gradually progress to longer interior lengths and are generally combined with other forms. |
combination forms | include two or more of the four basic forms within a sculpture. |
