Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ builds on TSS 2.0 with improved features.
TSS 2.5+ can detect pedestrians and cyclists in low-light situations among other enhancements.
The 2021 Camry and Highlander models receive TSS 2.5+ as standard.
Toyota has been offering a suite of advanced driving aid systems in its cars and trucks for a few years now, with the promise of reducing the number of injuries and fatalities on the road. Its latest generation of the package, called Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, builds on the previous generation, called TSS 2.0, with updated software and new capabilities.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, or TSS 2.5+, includes all the basic functionalities of the previous system roundup, but with more processing power and enhanced sophistication of the cameras, radar and computer systems used to make the brand’s vehicles safer.
In addition to forward collision warning that was already included with TSS 2.0, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ features autonomous emergency braking, which not only detects the vehicle ahead, but also pedestrians and cyclists, either during daytime or in low-light conditions. Moreover, when the driver performs a left-hand turn, the system detects oncoming vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, provides audio and visual alerts, and can ultimately apply the brakes if necessary.
The dynamic cruise control function has full-speed capability, which means it can follow preceding traffic—on city streets or on the highway—and bring the vehicle to a complete stop as needed. It can also anticipate a passing manoeuvre by accelerating when the driver approaches a slower-moving vehicle ahead, engages the turn signal and starts turning the steering wheel. The system thus reduces acceleration delay and will maintain the preset cruising speed. The dynamic cruise control can also reduce the vehicle’s speed if senses that the latter is entering a curve too fast.
As before, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist are included in Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which perform their duties more accurately with steering assistance, road-edge detection and lane-centring assist. If a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle’s trajectory, the system will activate evasive steering assist to avoid the person walking on the street, without nudging the vehicle out of its lane and causing an overlapping collision. Automatic high beams and road sign assistance are also part of the safety suite.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is fitted as standard on the refreshed 2021 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, the 2021 Toyota Highlander—which is offering a new sporty XSE trim level and other enhancements—as well as the Highlander Hybrid. TSS 2.5+ will then be gradually integrated across Toyota’s vehicle lineup in the coming years.
