What do you call someone who pretends to be rich?

I think imposter comes closest to it. There is also fraud, and there is pretender.

"Show-offs" or "exhibitionists", those who try to give people the impression that they are rich.

  • #4

None of those suggestions is restricted to people who pretend to be rich.

I know that. That's why I used the phrase "closest to it".

I suppose ' fake rich' or 'fake rich person' would do just fine to explain it.
it is not a word though.

See above.

I'm probably about to be proved wrong, but I don't think there is a specific word for someone who pretends to be rich. Out of curiosity, Jackson6612, is there a word in Hindi for it?

Thank you.

There isn't a specific word but there are few slang terms in Hindi which could convey the idea.

I can't think of a single word for it, but there are plenty of phrases. Depending on context, you could try:

- a social climber
- a society poser
- all hat and no cattle (strictly a Texas-ism)
- the fake rich
- the pseudo-rich
- the faux-riche
- a social gatecrasher
- a gentleman crook
- a social pretender (used as the name of a popular rock band)

I'm looking for a verb used on someone who doesn't have much in the pocket but strains to keep up his/her appearance through constant notions of luxuries he/she doens't really have.

In Chinese we have sayings like "穷嘚瑟(flaunt with no money)" or "装大款(fake being rich)", which are often used in a sarcastic and informal tone; but I haven't had any luck finding any English equivalent yet.

Also, is there an adjective for people behaving like that? Thanks a lot!

The best single word I can think of is "pretentious". You may also like the expression "two bob snob" or "all hat and no cattle" (and its many variants.)

I'm not sure if there's a verb that specifically means "to pretend to be wealthy," but the word pose is used a lot to describe someone who fakes their true nature.

to pretend to be something that you are not or to have qualities that you do not have, in order to be admired or attract interest
