Arsenal head up to Old Trafford on Sunday to face champions Manchester United in this weekend's standout Premier League fixture.

It's a classic rivalry that usually produces a high standard of football, equally high levels of drama and more often than not moments of huge controversy.

So, what better time to take a look back at some of the more memorable encounters of recent times?

Here we select five clashes that have stuck firmly in the memory of United fans, and tomorrow we'll have five more from which the Gunners emerged victorious.

1. United 1-1 (2-1 Aet) Arsenal: FA Cup Semi-Final Replay 1999, Villa Park

The match that had everything. David Beckham's opener was cancelled out by Denis Bergkamp before Roy Keane was sent off for United.

Arsenal wasted a great chance to win it in normal time when Peter Schmeichel brilliantly saved Bergkamp's spot kick and the Gunners were made to regret that miss when in extra-time Ryan Giggs scored one of the greatest individual goals of all time to seal a famous victory.

United never looked back and went on to win the FA Cup and complete an unprecedented treble.

2. Arsenal 2-6 United: League Cup Fourth Round 1990, Highbury

Lee Sharpe makes a name for himself. Just a month after the infamous brawl at Old Trafford which saw both clubs fined and docked points, they met again in what was then known as the Rumbelows Cup, this time in North London.

United got their revenge as Sharpe netted a hat-trick and had ample opportunity to showcase the Sharpie Shuffle, a jig around the corner flag that was to become de rigour in the playgrounds of Manchester and Salford for the rest of the season.

United went on to reach the final, where they were upset by Sheffield Wednesday.

3. United 2-0 Arsenal: Premiership 2004, Old Trafford

No longer invincible. Arsene Wenger took his title-winning side to Manchester boasting a 49-match unbeaten run. Well, it had to end some time, didn't it?

A controversial penalty won by Wayne Rooney and converted by Ruud van Nistelrooy got Arsenal's backs up and as they searched for an equaliser Rooney sealed victory at the other end.

Arsenal felt aggrieved and their frustration boiled over at full-time when Alex Ferguson was showered with soup and pizza in the tunnel at full time. Pizza-gate was born. Typically, Wenger claimed he saw nothing.

4. Arsenal 2-4 United: Premier League 2005, Highbury

Old foes go at it. This one kicked off before the referee's first whistle as Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira exchanged angry words as they made their way onto the pitch.

The action once the match started was no less explosive as United twice came from behind in a niggly, spiteful game.

Ryan Giggs scored and Cristiano Ronaldo added two, but the best goal of the day came from an unlikely source—John O'Shea sealing victory in the last minute with a delightful chip.

5. United 6-1 Arsenal: Premier League 2001, Old Trafford

United run riot. When United registered that 6-2 win at Highbury in 1990, not in their wildest dreams did they think they would ever better it.

They did 11  years later as Dwight Yorke returned to the team in spectacular fashion, scoring a hat-trick despite having been left out in the cold for the start of the season. Thierry Henry had leveled for the Gunners at 1-1, but by the time Yorke completed his treble after just 22 minutes, United were home and dry.

Five-one up at halftime thanks to goals from Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, United completed the rout through Teddy Sheringham's effort after the break.
