G'day all!
I just moved here from W.A. and after cutting my teeth doing fire trails and bits of enduro here and there I've finally got myself a bike and looking to warm up again on some fire trails close (ish) to Sydney. I've done the cursory google but haven't come up with much.

To give you an idea of difficulty/experience I literally got my licence last year about a week before I got to the states and jumped on a DR650 and did 25,000kms from Arizona, to Baja (including some Baja 500 stages and a broken leg) and back up through America to Canada. So I've had some experience but it's been at least six months since I've had a proper dirt ride.

Got a KLX450R now (licensed), which is a lot quicker and lighter than the DR650 and I'm looking forward to hitting trails with it and hopefully get into some gnarly shit in the near future but for now, just a warm up.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome along
Cannot help you with the search for off-road routes but I'm sure there are folks on here that can give some suggestions
Happy riding

Welcome mate. Brave heading off on that type of ride a week after getting your license! But if it’s right for you it’s right for you, and I’m envious.

No idea re Sydney fire trails but interested to see the responses.

There is nothing legal within 2 hrs MINIMUM of the CBD, closest but illegal is Meni. Then its The Wadigan State Forest near Wyong. Then its Clarance near Lithgow and then it gets a bit further out. It was transporting by trailer for me. BTW you need full rego at all these spots, they have crackdowns every now and then. Look for group rides, Maybe Dirtbike World still does them.

Hey mate nice stuff.
Look up the DSMRA in your area, they'll get you sorted. The Sydney guys are great

I joined them when they first started but never went on a ride with them. They used to do a ride to a small town pub out near Jenolan Caves.

Ah good one! I was looking for something like this today. We've got Perth adventure riders in WA but obviously I never got a ride in with them before going to the states. I'll get on to this. cheers.

Hey thanks everyone!

I should point out my bike is fully road legal and licensed but I was going to take it on the back of my ute anyway if I had to go too far out of Sydney.

I know the fire trails are for burnoffs and national parks workers in general but are there any logging tracks etc?

Its been a few years but at The Pines in The Wadigan State forest there used to be lots of single track parallel to the forest roads, another access point is called The Letter A on Wollombi Rd up past Jerries Cafe that allows you into The Basin, another rd into The Wadigan State forest, its easy to get lost up there without Topo maps. The access at Clarance is off The Bells Line of Rd at the start of the Historic steam railroad heading to Lithgow. It's smart to join a riding group as you can easily get lost or crash and hurt yourself ks from your ute. These places are huge in size.

Bells line of road either side around bilpin on comleroy rd through to putty rd
anywhere from lower colo along the river on putty road the further up you have howes valley trail, finchley track then from the town of putty itself theres heaps, commision rd/3 ways etc.
Wisemens ferry area you have river rd one side(tar) and green rd from memory on the other(dirt).
Heading south you can start from wombeyan caves road and head to oberon/jenola caves/yerenderie and plenty more.
Then theres tracks everywhere around the Blue Mountains.
Further south again you have a tonne of tracks around Nowra and from wee jasper can head towards tumut/high country.

If you have a trailer you can park or free camp at grey gum(putty rd) and explore from there. Bout 20k's towards singleton from the cafe you have great tracks either side.Same option from The Watagans more or less.

Fkn great info! Hopefully I'll get work done and check out something on Saturday: probably wiseman's ferry/green road at this point. Zim I hear what you're saying about riding in groups but being new to Sydney and in the profession I'm in there are very few people that ride 'dirt' bikes or any kind of bike for that matter. Having said that if anyone wants to join for a ride in the coming weekends hit me up.
I've got a trail tech which is kinda helpful but also topo maps and I'll be taking it pretty damn easy; already had the broken leg in Baja running out of water, 150kms from the nearest road etc. etc. should probably save up for a spot tracker...

Well, still haven't made it anywhere yet; life getting in the way. Has anyone checked out this as a resource?

Four wheel driving and trail bike riding | Forestry Corporation of NSW

Hey mate,

I’m in the same situation you were in.

how did you go finding places to ride, people to ride with and that. Ive moved over from England and don’t know any where or anyone to ride. Any information would be great.

In NSW, if the bike is registered and the road is a declared road (firetrails are a road) then you are legal to ride them and enjoy them (I know I did when riding dirt).

What this means is that any state forest road that is not gated closed is freely accessible and legal to ride. So this opens up Watagans to the north, Meryla, Wingello, Penrose and Belangalo forests to the south.

Spent a lot of time in Meryla and could kill a day (admittedly with repeating tracks) and likewise the other three offer good fun riding. It is not single track stuff (that is in some of the forests) but it is a good variety of forestry roads and all legal.

Further south you have similar out back of Nowra as well as some public roads around Wombeyan Caves but this area has the issue of a lot (relatively speaking) of people driving 4 wheeled vehicles who do not like to share the roads.

To be honest I haven't made it out in Sydney yet; just got back from some adventure riding in Canada and America. I think gco0307 has the right idea. if you avoid national parks and stick to state forrest you're within your rights to use em. I know there's some good riding down towards Canberra too. I'm not there myself but there's a community workshop called rising sun so it might be worth going down there for lunch and having a chat to whomever runs that workshop if they've got any members that do this kinda riding. I've got another week waiting for parts for my shocks but I'll let you know if I find anything that's worth checking out.

Hi Bruce and Chad,

Me and a mate ride at Wingello most weekends, mostly fire trail with some single track if you know where to find it. We only bought our bikes this time last year so still learning the art of offroad. The tracks suit us well for our level. There is some hills to climb but way above our level. You need to be registered as the Forestry guys will take your Car, trailer and bike number plates. Depending on what your after this may be an option for you.
Happy to show you around, local cafe is great for lunch.
Cheers
