Setting up a fairly profound villain with sleazy confidence, horror filmmaker Ti West delivers the genre money shots with a good blend of shocking sudden dispatches and creeping kills we can all see coming.

X is a clever and exuberant throwback to a less innocent time, when movies could be naughty, disreputable and idiosyncratic. Full review An homage but also a strikingly original and cheerfully grotesque work, filled with dark humor, relatively complex subtext and gung-ho, all-in performances... Full review (X) brings the slasher back to its fleshy basics, leaning into what made the
granddaddies of slasher films so memorable. Full review There is an emotional heft to what (West's) doing amid all the red-hot naked bodies and still-warm cadavers, a sense of longing and the passing of time... Full review
A film that feels unpinned, ominous, and potentially unforgettable. Full review This isn’t a reinvention of the wheel, but a reminder of why the wheel became the industry standard in the first place. Full review A full-tilt genre experience that is as surprising as it is savage. Full review X is a properly satisfying shocker. Full reviewThe New York Times

West conjures nasty fun with a genre enthusiast’s expertise and then doesn't offer much beyond that.

FX and Disney are handing the keys to the Alien franchise to Noah Hawley (Legion, Fargo) for a new series that's currently slated to start filming in 2023.
The project is set to take Ridley Scott's iconic Xenomorph somewhere it's never gone before in more ways than one. The Alien TV show will be the first instalment of the franchise that will make its debut on a streaming service rather than a cinema and the first to take place entirely on Earth.
Details are light on when the first season of Alien will arrive, but we're pretty sure we already know where Aussies will be able to find it once it does.

In Australia, the new Alien series will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+ via the Star section of the streaming app.
Disney+ Star is the service's home for more mature TV shows and movies like Prey. It's an add-on to the Disney+ app you already use but is only accessible if you haven't set any age restrictions in the Disney+ app, so be sure to check your parental control settings if you're having trouble finding Alien on the day of release.
In addition to the science fiction series from the showrunner behind Fargo and Legion, you can find a huge range of Fox, Hulu and Disney classics with Star. Unlike most streaming services, Disney+ doesn't offer a free trial. Still, there is an opportunity to save if you sign up for an entire year in advance rather than pay month-to-month.
When does the Alien TV show release in Australia?
At the time of writing, FX's Alien does not have a firm release date. Filming for the project is set to take place in 2023, so fans of the series might be left waiting until the following year for their first taste of the series.
There's a slim chance that the first episode might debut on Disney+ before the end of 2023, but at this stage, we'd bet on the first season of FX's Alien to arrive in 2024.
What is the Alien TV show about?
While FX has yet to release an official synopsis for Alien, Noah Hawley has shared a few nuggets of information in interviews since the prequel was announced.
In 2021, Hawley told Variety that the series would break from past entries and set the action on a near-future version of Earth and deal with issues around class or corporate power.
"I thought it would be interesting to open it up a little bit so that the stakes of 'What happens if you can’t contain it?' are more immediate," he said.
A few other details about the series, and who might or not show up in it, have also been shared by FX chief John Landgraf.
"All I can tell you is Ripley won’t be a part of it, and neither will any other characters, other than the alien itself," he told Esquire in 2022.

If you went looking for where to stream the Alien films a few years back, the franchises' myriad entries would have been scattered across the streaming landscape. Netflix might have had one or two instalments of the series, while Stan, Amazon Prime Video and Binge held the rights to the rest.
However, as a direct consequence of Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the entire series (including its various spin-offs and prequels) can all now be found on Disney's streaming own service.
In Australia, Disney+ is where you'll be able to stream and watch the following:
- Alien
- Aliens
- Alien 3
- Alien Resurrection
- Prometheus
- Alien: Covenant
- Alien vs Predator
- Alien vs Predator: Requiem
What is Disney+?
If you somehow haven't heard of it before, Disney+ is the company's attempt to topple Netflix as the king of streaming. Thanks to breakout hits like The Mandalorian, Only Murder in the Building and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the service has rapidly picked up steam since launching in late 2019. As of August 2022, Disney+ is said to boast over 150 million subscribers.
For Australians, the depth of the catalogue and hype attached to prestigious franchises like Star Wars and Marvel make it one of the more compelling streaming services available. However, even if it's destined to be a must-have for some audiences, it's far from the only flavour in the mix.
