Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester City (6-5): as it happened

Real Madrid beat Man City to reach Champions League final

Real Madrid needed a goal on the night having lost the first leg 4-3 and Ancelotti's side had a couple of first half chances but it was scoreless at half-time.

Manchester City took the lead at the Bernabéu in the 73rd minute when Silva tee'd up Mahrez, who buried past Courtois to give City a two-goal lead on aggregate.

With Madrid looking dead and buried, up popped substitute Rodrygo to score in the 90th minute. Just seconds later, it was the Brazilian again, this time, he smashed a header beyond Ederson in the City goal.

Rodrygo's brace took Madrid to extra time, with the sides level at 5-5.

In the 94th minute, Dias brought down Benzema, who converted his spot kick to give Madrid the lead on aggregate.

Ancelotti's men held onto their 3-1 lead on the night and won 6-5 on aggregate to book their place in this year's final, where they will face Liverpool.

Why does Real Madrid’s Benzema always wear a bandage on his hand?

For over three years, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has worn a bandage covering his right wrist and hand during games - a habit that stems from a finger injury he suffered in a challenge with Real Betis’ Marc Bartra.

Pep Guardiola speaks after Real Madrid knock Manchester City out of the Champions League

Asked what happened tonight at the Bernabéu, where Real Madrid produced two goals in the final minutes to take the tie to extra time, with Benzema then scoring a penalty to sent Real Madrid through, Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said after the game ruefully that “they can do that to you”, despite the fact he thought City had been “controlling the game” at that point.

Guardiola did congratulate Ancelotti’s side on their win, and hoped for “great final against Liverpool”, although he admitted that the defeat was a “tough blow” and said City had “lacked football in the first half”. Asked if City had deserved more, he had no reply, “I don’t know,” was all he could muster.

The magic of Carletto

Ancelotti knows his best 11/12/13 players and has maximised their talent across the season. But there are players in the squad who have played very little football and who will leave the club.

This one is for the xG lovers!

Time to book those tickets

This year's Champions League final will take place at Saint-Denis’s Stade de France on Saturday 28 May.

More suffering for Pep

Opta - Guardiola has now suffered six eliminations at the semi-final stage of the UEFA Champions League; the joint-most of any manager, along with José Mourinho.

Madrid's comebacks

They just love this competition!

And it wasn't only tonight - it was also against PSG and Chelsea in the previous rounds.

City to now focus on the league

It's a tough one for Guardiola and the City players to swallow. They had their eyes on the prize this year after losing last year's final.

Carlo Ancelotti will need another cigar after that tonight. It had absolutely everything.

The Real Madrid squad are still out on the pitch and are all now wearing 14 on the back of their white t-shirts, with the message 'going for it'. They have won 13 Champions Leagues and are now just 90 minutes away from winning their 14th.

The Madrid players are doing a lap of the pitch at the Santiago Bernabéu, where all the fans have stayed back to clap off their heroes.

Madrid do it the hard way again

Real Madrid have done it again. They looked dead and buried tonight but unbelievably, they've gone and done it again.

It has been another unbelievable night at the Santiago Bernabéu. Madrid have come back time and time again against Europe's top sides and they've booked their place in this year's final in Paris.

Real Madrid will play Liverpool in this year's Champions League final!

81

Madrid haven't created any recent chances and need a mini miracle now if they're to take this game to extra time. City lead 3-5 on aggregate and 0-1 on the night.

80

Silva goes down the right and the ball comes off Mendy and goes out for a corner. Silva has been outstanding for City. He's such a tireless player.

City changes

OFF De Bruyne & Walker

ON Gundogan & Zinchenko

70

A challenge between Vinicius and Walker has left the latter rolling around on the ground. Vinicius is back on his feet. Maybe it's just some game management from City.

Valverde is expected to move into a more central role now, with Rodrygo playing on the right wing.

68

OFF Kroos

ON Rodrygo

67

Rodrygo is about to come on for Madrid. Madrid need a spark in attack.

66

Benzema clears De Bruyne's free in the Madrid box. Madrid are now camped in their own half. City have complete control. A goal for Pep's side now would be hugely problematic for Madrid.

64

Jesus wins the ball back in midfield. De Bruyne is then fouled by Carvajal and the Spaniard receives a yellow for the late challenge. Carvajal has been impressive up and down the right flank for Madrid tonight.

Pep talk

Pep is also about to make a change for City. Zinchenko is warming up.

60

It's 0-0 as we approach the hour-mark in the Spanish capital. Ancelotti is thinking about substitutions. His side needs a goal.

City's first-leg success over Madrid was only the second semi-final first leg in Champions League history to see seven goals scored (along with Liverpool 5-2 Roma in 2017-18).

56

It's happened again. Madrid make their way into the box but a single touch lets them down. Vinicius is through again but his touch allows City to clear it. Madrid have City on the ropes, but the home side have just lacked that final ball. Vinicius has not stopped tormenting the backline.

55

Casemiro threads it through to Vinicius, who is stopped in his tracks by Bernardo Silva. It's super defending by Silva.

54

Madrid have stepped up in the opening stage of the second half. They're now chasing that much-needed goal, which would of course take the game to extra time.

53

That Vinicius run has lifted the Bernabéu.

52

Vinicius goes on one of his mazy runs down the left, dancing past City players. The ball ends up at Modric's feet but his first touch lets him down, so unlike him! His shot is then blocked. 0-0

Madrid have been eliminated in all five previous semi-finals in the competition when they have lost the first leg, but Los Blancos have progressed from two of their last three knockout ties when losing the first leg, including their remarkable comeback win against PSG in March.

We've had unbelievable games involving Madrid in this year's knockout stages. The previous rounds against Chelsea and PSG were so entertaining. There have been no goals yet tonight but once one team opens the scoring, we could have another fascinating second half on our hands.

47

Jesus fouls Militao. It's a free kick to Madrid, who have a huge 45 minutes ahead of them.

46

From tip off, Madrid get to goal in about eight seconds. Carvajal crosses to Vinicius at the back post and he should really score, but puts it wide. It's an excellent move.

46

Real Madrid kick us off for the second half!

Benzema targets Cristiano Ronaldo Champions League record

Karim Benzema is having one of those seasons. Alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Real Madrid attack, he proved himself to be a more than a competent striker, but since being asked to lead the line himself, he’s done a rather decent job of it. And this season he’s exceeded all expectations.

Half-time in Madrid

Real Madrid have had a couple of half-chances in the opening 45 minutes. Benzema went close twice. Courtois made a big save from Bernardo Silva's close range strike but it remains scoreless.

HT: Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester City

The referee blows his whistle for half-time.

As things stand, City lead 4-3 on aggregate and are heading to Paris. We have a big second half coming up!

47

De Bruyne shoots off his left. It's deflected out for a corner. Foden crosses. Valverde heads it clear.

45+

There will be two additional minutes.

45

Casemiro dives and looks for a free. The referee waves play on. City race away on the break but Mahrez puts far too much on the pass for De Bruyne. The Belgian playmaker shows his frustration with the through-ball.

43

Benzema is through on goal but curls it over. He was offside!

41

The Santiago Bernabéu is chanting Luka Modric's name.

40

What a challenge by Walker!

Vinicius is flying down the left. Walker makes a crunch sliding tackle in the box to prevent the Brazilian from advancing further. Excellent tackle. The English defender has the pace for Vini Jr.

40

Courtois makes another stop from Foden, who shoots form distance. The Belgian gets down to save it.

36

Modric chips a wonderful ball from deep over the top. Walker shoulders Vinicius away. I've seen free-kicks for less but he does quite well.

City lead on aggregate

City fans will be the happier so far.

34

Benzema gets the ball just where it hurts and walks away looking quite fragile after the bang. I felt that too.

33

Possession:

Madrid - 46%

Man City - 54%

32

Casemiro is down after a clash with Foden. The Brazilian is being treated. Davide Ancelotti, Carlo's son, is out giving instructions to his players. There is still a long way to go here but as things stand, City are in the final. Madrid need a goal to take it to extra time.

31

Modric crosses from the byline on the right. Dias reads it well and gets in front of Benzema. Benzema has scored 14 Champions League goals this season.

Ancelotti is the first coach to have triumphed across all of Europe's big five leagues, winning LaLiga with Madrid at the weekend.

Walker gets up extremely well to clear that but takes a whack from Militao and is now receiving treatment. 0-0

27

Kroos' free is heading for the top corner but takes a slight deflection off the City wall. Madrid's corner on the left is headed away by Walker.

26

Rodri takes down Vinicius. Madrid have a free-kick in a dangerous position, to the left about 25 yards out.

25

City have found their groove now and are keeping possession of the ball closer to Madrid's goal.

23

Jesus fires wide!

The ball falls to Jesus on the edge of the box but he curls it wide. It's 0-0 if you're just joining our coverage. City lead 4-3 on aggregate.

22

Pep is cracking up over something in the dugout. He once brought Messi to the Bernabéu and played him in a false 9. Barcelona won the game 6-2. Tonight will hardly be 6-2?

Along with Benzema and Vinicius, Courtois has also been exceptional this season.

20

COURTOIS SAVES!

Silva strikes with his right foot from close range but the Belgian shotstopper makes a fine save.

Vinicius has been absolutely sensational this season. The development in just one season has been frightening. And some say that Ancelotti can't develop players!

18

Mahrez takes Kroos down. Madrid have a free near the halfway line. It eventually makes it way to Vinicius on the left but he shoots well over.

Back to De Bruyne. He has registered 18 Champions League assists since making his first City appearance in the competition in September 2015, a tally that is only bettered by Neymar (25) and Kylian Mbappé (20) during that time.

15

Madrid race forward on the break. Vinicius has it on the left. Benzema drops off into a central position but the Brazilian can't find him.

14

De Bruyne cuts onto his left about 25 yards from goal. His strike is an easy one for Courtois.

Real Madrid have been in 10 of the last 12 Champions League semi-finals. It's serious consistency.

13

City have struggled to play their possession game so far.

12

Madrid do more damage down the right. Kroos switches to Carvajal, who finds Valverde. Valverde crosses low to Benzema, but the No 9 shoots over the bar. It's another well-worked move by Madrid. 0-0

City have won their last three Champions League matches against Madrid – only two sides have ever won four in a row against them in European competitions, with Ajax doing so between 1973 and 1995 and Bayern Munich replicating that achievement between 2000 and 2002.

8

The referee has dished out two yellows, one for Modric and one for Laporte after the defender swiped at the Croatian and there was some pushing and shoving.

7

Modric looks to switch it left but there's nobody there and the ball rolls out of play. Casemiro then takes down De Bruyne. City have a free. The Bernabéu whistles.

5

Casemiro is a huge addition to the Madrid side this week. Kroos tried to play his role at the Etihad but was found out. Casemiro will offer that protection but Madrid need to defend better tonight to have a chance of advancing to the final.

4

BENZEMA!

Carvajal curls a cross into the box from the right. Benzema is free but heads over the bar. A slick move by Los Blancos.

3

Joao Cancelo is at left-back for City. He'll offer an offensive threat. Walker, who missed the first leg, is at right-back, up against Vinicius.

2

There are loud whistles for the City players every time they touch the ball.

2

City clear Kroos' low free-kick.

1

Mahrez pushes Vinicius. Madrid have a free on the left, near the corner flag.

1

Carvajal pulls Foden down and it's an early free to City.

City get us underway!

Benzema nods along to the music, he looks pumped!

And now for the Champions League anthem!

The players are in the tunnel...

The Santiago Bernabéu is rocking!

We've seen some great European contests at the Bernabéu this season. The PSG comeback with Benzema's hat-trick as well as the Chelsea game. City head into tonight's game with a slender advantage, winning 4-3 in the first leg. But never rule Madrid out. They're at home, they have Modric, Benzema etc. This will be fascinating.

Courtois warms up

Courtois gets some last-minute diving in before kick-off, which is just 10 minutes away.

How many Champions Leagues have Real Madrid, Manchester City won?

On Wednesday, Real Madrid host Manchester City in the second leg of a Champions League semi-final tie between two teams who have 13 European titles between them. Sadly for City, and despite their best efforts since their 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group, all 13 belong to Madrid.

Madrid are the undisputed kings of Europe, having won the competition - known as the European Cup until its 1992 rebrand as the Champions League - more than any other club. Indeed, Los Blancos have lifted the trophy on nearly twice as many occasions as the tournament’s next-most successful club, AC Milan, who have seven continental crowns to their name.

Liverpool, who await Madrid or City in the final in Paris on 28 May, will move level with Milan on seven European Cup victories if they win the competition this season.
