The Wii Remote has four Player LED lights that are used as various indicators:

  • The LED that is illuminated indicates the Player number.
  • Blinking LEDs indicate the Wii Remote is attempting to sync.
  • When the Player LEDs are blinking they will indicate the battery level. If only one or two LEDs are blinking, this means the battery is low.

How to sync a Wii remote:

  1. Press the Power button on the Wii console to turn it on.
  2. Open the SD Card Slot cover on the front of the Wii console. If you are using a Wii mini, the sync button is located on the left hand side next to the battery compartment. The sync button is a darker shade of red than the console.
  3. Remove the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote to be synced.
  4. Press and release the SYNC button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; the Player LED on the front of the Wii Remote will blink. While the lights are still blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button on the Wii console.
  5. When the Player LED blinking stops and stays lit, the syncing is complete. The LED that is illuminated indicates the player number (1 through 4).
  6. This sync procedure must be followed for each additional Wii Remote added to the system.

How to clear syncs on Wii:

  1. Turn on the Wii console and wait until the Health & Safety screen appears (don't press the A Button).
  2. Open the small flap on the front of the Wii console and locate a red button labeled "SYNC."
  3. This button is located on the left side of the Wii mini.
  4. Press and hold the SYNC Button down for 15 seconds. This will clear all the syncs on the Wii.
  5. Sync the Wii Remote(s) to the console.
  6. Each Wii Remote being used with the console will need to be synced

How to reset a Wii remote:

  1. Take out the batteries, wait for one minute, and then reinsert them (there is no need to use new batteries).
  2. Wait a few seconds before pressing any buttons to wake up the Wii Remote.
  3. Resync the Wii Remote.

If all else fails:

The lights on the Wii Remote blink momentarily before turning off means that the Wii Remote is not paired with your system.  Follow these steps to allow your Wii Remote to pair (or "sync") with your Wii console.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the Wii console, and let it sit for at least a few seconds.
  2. Remove the battery cover from your Wii Remote.
  3. Plug the power cord back into the console and power it on.
  4. Press and release the SYNC button on your Wii Remote.
  5. The Wii Remote's lights will start flashing.
  6. While the Wii Remote lights flash, press and release the SYNC button on the Wii console.
  7. This button is located on the left side of the Wii mini.
  8. The Wii Remote lights should go from flashing to one single solid light.

The Wii remote is an integral part of the Wii game console. If your Wii remotes aren't functioning properly, you are out of luck playing Wii games. Luckily, there are many easy fixes for a Wii remote that keeps blinking and won't communicate with the Wii console.

    Replace the Batteries

    i Heather Milward/Demand Media

When a Wii remote begins to act erratically, your first step should be to replace the batteries. Wii remote batteries should last around 30 hours, but drain more quickly if you are using the nunchuk or if there is a lot of rumble, motion or sound in the games you are playing. If the Wii remote is blinking and won't let you check the battery life onscreen, try replacing the batteries by removing the back cover from the Wii remote and inserting new batteries.

Re-sync the Wii Remote with the Wii Game Console

    i Heather Milward/Demand Media

In case of a power surge or electrical disruption, the Wii console automatically shuts down and reboots itself. This shutdown can cause various settings to not work properly, such as not recognizing a previously working Wii remote. This shutdown can happen without you being aware of it. First, turn the Wii power off by pressing the "Power" button on the front of the Wii. Then unplug the power cord from the outlet. Wait two minutes, then plug the cord back into the outlet. Next, turn the Wii on by pressing the "Power" button. Once you see the start-up screen, open the small SD card slot under the Wii's disk drive. Press the red "Sync" button above the SD card slot for 15 seconds to start fresh and clear the Wii of any previous Wii remote syncs. Now re-sync the blinking remote by removing the battery cover from the Wii remote and pressing the small red "Sync" button. The blue lights on the front of the Wii remote should blink. Quickly, go back to the front of the Wii console, open the SD card slot and press the red "Sync" button. Look at your Wii remote. It is successfully re-synced with the console when the lights quit blinking, and one blue light remains on. This blue light indicates which player, number 1 through 4, that the Wii remote is synced to. For example, if this is the first remote that you re-synced with the console, the first blue light will be on.

Look for Items that May Cause Interference

    i Heather Milward/Demand Media

Infrared light sources can interfere with the Wii remote and cause it to blink repeatedly. Try moving any bright light source away from the sensor bar that sits next to your TV. For example, blow out candles, pull curtains closed to block direct sunlight, extinguish wood burning in a fireplace, or turn off your Christmas tree lights. Radio frequencies can also disrupt the Wii remote. Try moving or shutting off all wireless devices, such as cordless phones, wireless mice or wireless keyboards when you are playing the Wii.

Why is my Wii Remote flashing and not connecting?

Press and release the SYNC button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; the Player LED on the front of the Wii Remote will blink. While the lights are still blinking, quickly press and release the red SYNC button on the Wii console. When the Player LED blinking stops and stays lit, the syncing is complete.

What does blinking lights on Wii Remote mean?

The LED that is illuminated indicates the Player number. Blinking LEDs indicate the Wii Remote is attempting to sync. When the Player LEDs are blinking they will indicate the battery level. If only one or two LEDs are blinking, this means the battery is low.

Why is my Wii Remote not working even with new batteries?

If you have fresh batteries that are making good connections inside of the Nintendo Wii Remote, but the remote still does not turn on, there may be a poor power button connection. The connection between the power button and the motherboard may be dirty, causing the remote not to turn on.

How do you revive a dead Wii Remote?

Wii Remote Not Working Correctly (No Lights Appear at All).
Replace the batteries in the Wii Remote with a fresh set..
Once the batteries have been replaced, press any button on the Wii Remote to see if any lights appear..
