Powerball jackpot jumps to $500M ahead of New Year's Day drawing

A very lucky person could be starting off 2022 with life-changing money if they win the Powerball jackpot on New Year's Day.

A lucky winner could earn an estimated $522 million from Monday's Powerball drawing after no tickets hit all five numbers and the Powerball on Saturday night.

The numbers for Saturday night's drawing were 6, 12, 39, 48, 50 and the Powerball was 7.

But there are four new millionaires out there. Tickets sold in Arizona, California, Florida and Maryland matched all five white balls to win the second-tier prize. The ticket sold in Maryland also had the Powerplay to win $2 million.

The Powerball jackpot winner was last drawn on Oct. 4.

Powerball payout after taxes

If the winner claims the cash option as opposed to a 30-year payout, the individual will walk away with $371.5 million. For the cash option, the federal tax that would be withheld is $92,875,000.00, while the state tax is $32,766,300.00. After all the taxes are paid, the winner gets a net lump-sum payment of $245,858,700.00.

For the annuity option in the amount of $522 million, the winner gets paid in 30 annual payments in the average amount of $17,400,000.00 per year. The average federal tax liability is $4,350,000.00 per year. The average state tax liability is $1,534,680.00 yearly. Residents of New York City and Yonkers are subject to extra local tax liabilities, according lottery officials.

Powerball drawings are held each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EST.

How to play Powerball

Choose five numbers 1 to 69 and one number 1 to 26 to be your Powerball. To win the Powerball jackpot, match the six numbers on your ticket to the drawn six-number combination (five numbers plus the Powerball).

No one matched all six numbers to win the Powerball jackpot, but one ticket purchased in Texas matched all five numbers except for the Powerball worth $1 million.

A ticket bought in North Carolina matched all five numbers except for the Powerball and included the Power Play worth $2 million.

Powerball Double Play numbers

The Double Play numbers are 14, 23, 29, 38, 43, and the Powerball is 20.

No tickets matched all six numbers, and no one matched all five numbers except for the Powerball worth $500,000.
