Tammy Bruce was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 20, 1962. There isn’t a lot of information about her parents. However, she once revealed in an interview that her mother had conceived her as a result of an affair with a member of the mobster gang Bugsy Siegel and Sam Giancana. When Bruce’s mother became pregnant, Bruce’s father abandoned her. Therefore, Bruce never learned who her father was. She became interested in genealogy, and her search for her father continued.

Bruce earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the ‘University of Southern California and is currently working on a doctorate at the ‘Claremont Graduate University.’ Bruce developed an interest in politics and individual liberty from a young age, influenced by writers Ray Bradbury and George Orwell. Tammy Bruce was in her twenties when she was forced to face the pain of losing a loved one, her partner Brenda Benet.

Bruce, who always considered herself to be bisexual but identified as lesbian as a choice, was engaged with Benet to be married. But her relationship with the actress did not have a happy ending, and that’s where all the information about her personal life stopped coming out.

Benet's Death Left Her Traumatized

Bruce worked as a secretary to Days Of Our Lives actress Benet. This was a time when Benet had been struggling with grief. She had been battling through the loss of her son and a recent divorce with her ex-husband Bill Bixby.

The actress had split from Bixby in 1979 after having a kid and 10 years of marriage. Then, the loss of her son, Christopher Sean Bixby, to a rare childhood illness called acute epiglottitis on March 1, 1981, added to her miseries.

While all this was going on, Bruce was still close to Benet. After Benet’s divorce, they started dating again (it has been reported that they had dated in the past), and this time, they even moved in together in a house at Mandeville Canyon in west Los Angeles.

However, their relationship didn’t last for long. They broke up in March 1982 for reasons unknown but seemed to remain on good terms. Two weeks after this, unbeknownst to Bruce, a tragedy would strike her life.

On April 7, 1982, Bruce had a lunch planned with Benet. But when she reached Benet’s house, she found out that Benet had locked herself inside the bathroom. She called the police, but it was too late when they arrived on the site.

Upon arriving, police broke the door down only to find Benet dead. She had inflicted a gunshot wound on her head with a .38 caliber bullet which ended up killing her.

The incident affected Bruce so much that she had a mental breakdown. She ended up in a hospital for a few days, and Bill Bixby, Benet’s ex-husband, paid her entire hospital bills.

Had Already Come Out In Her 20s

Born on 20 August 1962, Bruce grew up amid adversities of poverty. Never knowing her father was one issue, rarely seeing her hard-working store clerk mother was another, then the last addition was growing up with her homosexuality.

From a young age, she knew she was different and proudly identified as a lesbian. And with the knowledge of media impact, she actively became a gay-lesbian activist, organizing marches and pressuring politicians for gay and women's rights, despite being a conservative.

Interestingly, the Northridge native stresses that not all conservatives hate the LGBT community. In an interview with The Guardian back in October 2010, she mentioned many conservatives follow the faith and have a different view on homosexuality than hers. Then, she stated that despite the general belief, she found conservatives to be more understanding.

I have found conservatives to be more tolerant, more curious and more understanding of those who are different to them than I ever did when ensconced in US liberal leadership.
