Best dog food for pitbulls with skin allergies Reddit

Does anyone have any suggestions for the absolute best dog food I can give my baby boy? He has bad allergies and sensitive skin, and his vet suggested a couple brands from tractor supply, but I just want a second opinion from pitty owners that have the same issues. Thank you! from pitbulls

Hi everyone, a while back I wrote a post about my girl, who is now almost a year old, and had been battling skin infection after skin infection, and being allergic to every food in the world. If you look at my previous post on this subreddit, you can read everything I went through, and pretty much my lost stage.

I'm writing to let everyone know that I found a solution that works for us, and this could work for someone else who loves their pittty as much as I do.

She WAS on royal canine hydrolyzed protein prescription diet, as its hypoallergenic and supposed to eliminate symptoms of allergic reaction (she was also on many rounds of antibiotics and steroids in the beginning of treatment, but continued the food to AVOID new reaction)... but even after treatment and food, she was still getting belly rashes, bumps, UTIs, bleeding occasionally from her skin, and biting her tail and butt. She was on this vet prescribed food for a about 6 months, but still on and off getting the belly rash. When she would start to get a rash, I'd give her 2 benedryl every 6 hours for 24 hours (she's 53 lbs), hot spot spray on affected areas every 6 hours for and duoxo cchlorehexidine mousse on affected area every 6 hours, and symptoms would usually go completely away (she'd be a little itchy still though but no infections), however, infection would usually come back within a week, and we would start all over again.

I needed a permanent solution. I heard good things about Zigniture Venison Formula from a woman in the pet store who's pitty went through the same things as my girl. At this point I said what the heck, and tried it. She gets about 3 cups a day of it, because it's very nutrient rich, with all raw ingredients, no preservatives... and really it's just awesome if you read into it. After 2 days on it, she was rash free, bump free, no UTI, but still biting her tail. After a week, no biting now too!

She never wanted to play, maybe from her vet diet, or itching so much and being so uncomfortable.... well today, she brought me her ball, and made me follow her outside to the back door, and we played fetch for the first time in months and I cried like a baby.

I am I biologist fresh out of college, with a lot of research history, but I'm not a vet. I know a lot, but I'm not an expert obviously... but this worked for us. I'm hoping it could help someone else as well!

When picking food for your dog with allergies, stay away from duck, chicken, fish, beef, corn, soy, grain, preservatives, and dairy.

The food that has worked for her is expensive, and it does expire after so long because there are no preservatives, but I'm actually feeding her LESS in cups because there are no fillers, so I'm spending the same amount on food a month due to her needing less of the food than other brands to fit her nutritional needs.

I am hoping this trend continues, and hoping this helps anyone else going through what I did! Feel free to send me a comment or message if you have any other questions!

I want to make it clear as well, that she is no longer on benedryl, or the mousse and spray. I do keep it handy but I haven't needed it! I'm all smiles, because I hate the thought of prolonged antihistamines.

My dog has had real dry skin, as well as a few ear infections and other coat issues due to allergies to EVERYTHING. I am looking for a food to help with fixing that..

I am currently debating between Hill's Science Diet Dry Dog Food, Adult, Sensitive Stomach & Skin, and Purina Pro Plan FOCUS Sensitive Skin & Stomach. After researching both of them and reading reviews it looks like they might both work really well. I know Purina is less expensive and had a lot of reviews which matched my exact problems/ needs, and Hills is vet approved and also seems to be what I'm looking for, but has anyone had any experience with either? Help me out, guys! Thanks!

What kind of dog food do you guys feed your pibbles? from pitbulls

My pit bull Mocha will be 4 years old this November. We rescued her almost two years ago. Long story short...a woman had to give her up because she could no longer keep her. She placed Mocha in a home she thought was fit. The man who had her was breeding fighting dogs=( Mocha had a litter of puppies that no one could find. The woman took Mocha back home with her and Mocha had patches of fur missing and was underweight. She also puked up a whole tomato!.

Long story short...the woman we got Mocha from said that Mocha had no health issues while she was in her care. After we got her...she has developed allergies. We are not sure what causes it. We have been to the vet many times and they say to give her benadryl. It hasn't really helped. I'm going to switch her food next week to Purina Pro Plan Select for sensitive skin and stomach. I was wondering if any redditors have had experience with their pitbull(s) having allergies. Was their any medicines or foods that worked? I would appreciate any advice!

Edit: Thank you all so much for your advice! Miss Mocha Butt and I are grateful! Give all your pibbles and other furry children hugs from us!=D

I’m looking for dog and puppy food recommendations that you may have noticed work good for pitbulls specifically (American pit bull terrier). I know they can have allergies/sensitive skin. I’m looking for any type or food, hard, soft, wet, or even raw food diets. I’m open to anything & everything, I just want the best for my babygirl. Preferably something not super expensive but if it’s what works then I’ll take it. 🐶

I have a 4 month old blue nose pittie named Samus. She is my baby and I want to make sure she has the best life possible. Before getting her, I read a lot on the breed so I could properly provide for her. The information I found informed me that it is very common for pitties to have allergic reactions to foods that contain grains, so I've had her on Nature's Domain Puppy formula since they are grain free. Kirkland brand foods were previously recommended to me by a couple vets so I thought it would be safe.

She was just in the vet for a mysterious hive outbreak that was non-related to her diet (came to find out the poor girl has intestinal parasites, but shes being treated now so dont worry), and the vet informed me to switch her to a grain inclusive diet. I'm reluctant to do so because of everything I've read, and I don't want the poor girl to suffer through another wave of hives and itchiness. So, I was hoping to get some insight on what the best brands would be for her, or if I'm possibly just being too paranoid? She is my first pitbull so I don't have much experience and knowledge aside from the hundreds of articles I've read. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you so much for reading.

I have a 1.5 year old jack russell terrier who has been suffering from some allergies lately. Her skin is often pink/red (belly, throat, nose mostly) and she scratches a lot as well as bites at her paws. She broke out in hives randomly about two weeks ago and I have no idea why.

Allergy shots and short doses of apoquel have not helped at all, but she is now on a longer dose of apoquel which only seems to be helping slightly. Obviously I don’t want to keep giving her meds though if it can be avoided.

My vet recommended switching her food, however I don’t know if I agree with the options she suggested.

She currently eats Health Extension, the chicken and brown rice formula. That’s what the breeder had her on, and upon doing research it seemed to be a good food, so I kept her on it.

My vet recommended one of these two foods: Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach or Purina Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Of the two I’d go with Hill’s because I’ve heard bad things about Purina, although I’m not sure if all their lines are equal in quality.

I’ve done some research but I’m getting overwhelmed with all the options and mixed reviews. A lot of websites are recommending grain free food for dogs with allergies but I thought grain free foods were bad?! I’m thinking I’d like her to be on a salmon based formula, but I have no idea where to start.

Anybody with a dog with sensitive skin/allergies feed their dog a quality food from a reputable brand that they would recommend?

I’m very overwhelmed so I thought I’d look here for at least some place to start! Thank you!!

edit: also does anybody have any topical products they recommend to help soothe her skin? I feel so bad for my baby :(
