Almost every Pokémon in the franchise has multiple abilities along with a Hidden Ability. However, players cannot find Pokémon with their Hidden Abilities in the wild or through breeding (unless the parent has the ability), including in Sword and Shield.

Hidden Abilities

These are basically an extra ability that a Pokémon can have. They were introduced in Pokémon Black and White where Pokémon with them could only be obtained in the Dream World. They have been available through various different methods in every generation since then.

Most Pokémon have one or two abilities along with their Hidden Ability. For example, Eevee has the abilities Run Away and Adaptability, and its hidden is Anticipation. This ability doesn’t necessarily have to be unique or rare, and it isn’t always the strongest ability either.

These hiddens can be very useful in competitive play. For example, an Eevee with Anticipation will evolve into a Sylveon with Pixilate. Pixilate makes all Normal-type attacks Fairy-type. This means that Sylveon can use powerful moves like Hyper Voice and Hyper Beam as Fairy-type STAB (same-type attack bonus) attacks.

How to find Pokémon with their Hidden Abilities in Sword and Shield

Max Raid Battles

Certain Pokémon caught in Max Raid Battles will have their Hidden Abilities. Only four or five-star Max Raid Battles will have them, and it is not a guarantee that they will. Be sure to check and make sure the desired ability can be found this way before spending time and resources trying to find it.

Pokémon Home

The Pokémon Home app was released earlier this month, and certain Hidden Abilities can be obtained in Sword and Shield via transfer with the app. To do this, simply transfer the Pokémon with the desired ability into the Home app from a previous game and then move it into Sword or Shield from there.

Trading

There are plenty of community Discords, forums, and subreddits out there where players can trade. Pokémon with their Hidden Abilities have a 60% chance of passing it down through breeding. This means that it is easy for these players to breed and pass these abilities on.

When planning out a competitive team, be sure to check out each ability and make sure it’s the best one. Having certain abilities can be the difference between winning and losing battles.

Hidden Abilities were introduced within Pokémon Black & White as a means of giving various abilities to older Pokémon and providing a new alternative. Pokémon Sword & Shield continues this, with a few changes. Most notably, the method to get Hidden Abilities is unique. In the game, Pokémon in Max Raid Battles can have a chance of having their Hidden Ability, but not all of them have that capability. Other Pokémon will get their Hidden Ability either by breeding transferred Pokémon from Pokémon HOME or through distributions and events at a later date.

As of The Crown Tundra, you now have the Ability to get an Ability Patch, an item that will change your Pokémon's ability to a Hidden Ability, but it can't change it back to a normal ability. This makes every Pokémon capable of having a Hidden Ability.

Pokemon you catch in Max Raid Battles sometimes have a hidden ability. For example, the picture above is a Toxapex with its hidden ability "Regenerator". Normal wild Toxapex only have Merciless or Limber, so if you're looking for the hidden ability, you'll need to do raid battles to get it.

Trade For A Pokemon With Hidden Ability

Another way to get a Pokemon with hidden ability is through trading. Someone might have the a spare Pokemon that has the hidden ability you want that is up for trade! Head out to the forum below for a potential trade!

Hidden Abilities - Breeding

Easier With Female Pokemon With Hidden Abilities

Hidden Abilities can also be passed down through breeding. If the female parent has a hidden ability, it can pass it down more easily by breeding with any Pokemon with same egg group.

Inheritance Chance Is Around 50%

The chance that a child inherits the parents's hidden abilities is around 50%. Keep breeding until the desired ability shows up.

▼Sylveon	Hidden Ability: Pixilate Normal-type moves become Fiary-type moves. The power of those moves is boosted a little.
▼Toxapex	Hidden Ability: Regenerator Restores a little HP when withdrawn from battle.
▼Corviknight	Hidden Ability: Mirror Armor Bounces back only the stat-lowering effects that the Pokemon receives.
▼Galarian Corsola	Hidden Ability: Cursed Body May disable a move used on the Pokemon.
▼Gyarados	Hidden Ability: Moxie The pokemon shows moxie, & that boosts the Attack stat after knocking out any Pokemon.

Pixilate: Sylveon's Hidden Ability

Adds Extra Damage To Normal-type Moves

Sylveon's hidden ability Pixilate turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves. Not only does Sylveon get STAB on Normal-type moves, but this hidden ability adds extra damage on top of the STAB.

Use Pixilate With Hyper Voice

Hyper Voice is a normal-type special attack which has power of 90. By using this move with Pixilate, you can deal high damage to all opponents. Hyper Voice can be learned by using TR42.

Raid Battle vs Sylveon With Pixilate At Lake Of Outrage

Go to the Lake of Outrage & find a den located nearby the lake. If you see a purple pillar of light coming out, you have a chance to find Sylveon with its hidden ability.

Toxapex's Hidden Ability

Train An Undefeatable Toxapex!

Regenerator is a great ability to improve Toxapex's tankiness, as its Defense and Sp. Def are already high from the beginning and it learns moves like Will-O-Wisp and Recover to increase survivability. Also, don't forget to make it hold Black Sludge as well.

Find Toxapex At North Lake Miloch

Go to North Lake Miloch and you will see two Pokemon den in the lake. Find the den located on the border of South Lake Miloch.

Corviknight's Hidden Ability

Bounces Back Max-Move's Effects

This hidden ability bounces back the opponent's Max-Move effects as well. See the table below for Max-Move that lowers status.

Find Corviknight at Hammerlocke Hills

Fly a taxi to Hammerlocke Hills and move east. The first Pokemon den you will find is the one which spawns Corviknight.

Galarian Corsola's Hidden Ability

Cursed Body Disables Opponent's Move

This ability prevents the use of one move used on Galarian Corsola, making it difficult to defeat quickly. Using this ability with Strength Sap and Will-O-Wisp improves survivability drastically.

Find Galarian Cursola At Stony Wilderness

Galarian Cursola only appears in Shield Version. We've confirmed that Galarian Corsola's evolved form, Cursola spawns at a Pokemon den in the Stony Wilderness. Fly a taxi to Bridge Field and move north along the wall toward the Stony Wilderness. Note that Cursola will not have Cursed Body. You need to breed it and hatch a Galarian Corsola to get the hidden ability.

Gyarados's Hidden Ability

Buff Both Speed & Attack At Same Time

When Gyarados with Moxie defeats an opponent with Max Airstream, the flying-type Max Move, it boosts its Attack and Speed, which is the same effect as Dragon Dance.

Find Gyarados In East Lake Axewell

You can find a Gyarados den in East Lake Axewell. Fly a taxi to the Meetup Spot and go north. You will soon see East Lake Axewell - the den in the lake is the one you're looking for.
