I have Amazon Echo and various other devices spread across my home that Alexa can control. Whenever I clean my house or have mini parties at home, I use the play on all devices feature to hear music from everywhere. It is a pretty good feature, but it has its downsides too; for example, yesterday I hosted a dinner party at my house, and suddenly I got an important call. Since my phone was connected to all other devices via Alexa, I could not answer the call. Somehow I managed to get my phone disconnected, but I didn’t want a repeat of that incident again. So, after all my guests retired to their houses, I sat down and did extensive research on different ways by which you could stop Alexa from playing on all devices. To Stop Alexa from playing on all devices, use the Alexa voice app or Alexa voice command, or even Mute/Switch Off the particular Alexa Devices in question. I’ve also talked about using the sleep timer to set a duration, managing the multi-room group, and using the music app to stop the music. Use an Alexa Voice CommandYou might have created a group to play music on all Alexa devices. Therefore to stop Alexa from playing music on all devices, you can simply use the Alexa Voice Command. For that, just simply say, “Alexa, stop playing on (Echo group name)”. Here, the Echo group name is the name you have created for your group containing all these streaming music devices. This will help you to stop multi-device streaming. Use the Alexa AppIf you have your phone in your hand, you can grab the Alexa app from either the Play Store or App Store and use it to stop the stream. You may remove the devices that you don’t require to stream. For that, open the Alexa app. Select ‘Smart Home Control’ in the bottom right corner of your app, and it is a 3 bar button. Go to the ‘Speaker Group’ section and select the group containing that you want to remove. After that, tap ‘Unpair Speaker System’ and select the device that you want to remove. Mute particular Alexa DevicesAnother method is to mute the Alexa devices. This can be done by simply saying, “Alexa mute.” This will pause or mute that particular echo. Make sure you are standing near the device that you want to mute when you execute this command. Turn off particular Alexa DevicesIf none of the above methods worked, you could always turn off the devices that are not needed. For example, if you don’t want your echo to play music upstairs, just switch it off. This way, all others will continue playing without being disrupted. This method is far less complicated compared to the other ones and gets the job done faster. Use the Sleep Timer to set a DurationIf you have a habit of falling asleep while listening to music and then waking up to your echo still belting out songs, this is the perfect method for you. Amazon Echo allows you to set a sleep timer that will automatically turn off the music after a certain time. Sleep timers are in-built on quite a number of devices that play music. Once you set the timer for 30 minutes, the device will turn off after 30 minutes. In the case of Amazon Echo, the device won’t turn off, but instead, it will stop playing music. Setting the sleep timer is quite easy; all you have to do is say, “Alexa, set the timer for (your desired time)”. Thus once the desired time is over, it will automatically stop whatever it was playing. Manage the Multi-Room GroupYou may create and manage multiple groups so that you can play whatever and wherever you want. You can do that by organizing different devices into various groups depending on your convenience. For instance, you want to watch TV in your lounge but don’t want to stop the music playing elsewhere. In that case, create a group for all devices in the house except for the ones in your lounge and name it ‘Everywhere except lounge’. Now all you have to do is say, “Alexa, play everywhere except lounge”. To manage Multi-Room devices, first, you will have to create various groups. For that, open the Alexa app and tap ‘Smart Home Control’ in the bottom right corner. Tap the + sign and then select ‘Add Multi-Room music speakers’. Now choose a group to add the different devices. In case you don’t have a group, you may create one. Add each of the devices into different groups by tapping on it. Use the Music App to Stop the MusicIf you are playing the music through your phone, all you have to do is stop the music from playing on your phone. Open the app that is playing the music and then pause it or stop the music. This method is pretty easy and efficient. Final Thoughts on Stopping Alexa from Playing MusicSometimes, in a Multi-Room group, you won’t be able to switch between different groups by commanding Alexa. In that case, you will have to stop it manually via the app and then ask Alexa to play that particular group. Unlike a regular timer, the sleep timer card on the main screen of your Alexa App will not show how much time is left on the sleep timer. You can also cancel the sleep timer anytime you want by saying, “Alexa, cancel sleep timer”.
