5 1/2 vs 6 1/2 truck bed
5-1/2' foot bed vs. a 6-1/2' foot bed?

Hello, everyone.

I would like your thoughts on whether to get a 5-1/2 foot bed or a 6-1/2 foot bed.

I'm looking to buy a used 2009-2010 Lariat Crew Cab. My preference from a looks standpoint and a utility standpoint is to get a 6-1/2 foot bed. I occasionally haul sheetrock and plywood sheets which are 4'x6'. I also have a Honda Valkyrie motorcycle that I will occasionally want to load into the bed and the bike measures 8' long.

Most used Crews of 2009-2010 vintage come with the 5-1/2' bed. Do you guys like the looks of this shorter bed? It doesn't look proportional to me with the cab and engine compartment.

Also, does this shorter bed limit you in what you can fit into the bed?
Thanks,

PLywoord/sheetrosk, etc 5.5' bed is just fine. Valkyrie???? That is a BIG bike. Have you loaded it in a truck before? Thats a big bike to load. WIll truck be low - 2wd? I have had Hayabusas and now a Concourse 14 - still not as heavy as your Honda. Fitgs fine in 5.5 bed with tailgate down BUT there is a pucker factor when loading/unloading that bike. Busas were never a big deal to load (I am 6'5 and 270).

SOooo Not sure about the Valkyrie - you sure it is really 8' long? Then it won't fit in the 6.5' box either.

For me if I didnt have to drive into MInneapolis and had a bigger garage I would have gotten the bigger box. Those two factors made my decision for me.

Your needs say 6 1/2 to me. Personally I think the 5 1/2 looks more proportional in a stock truck but 6 1/2 looks much better lifted.

Thanks,

If you're hauling sheetrock, etc (and especially a motorbike), you'll find a 6.5 bed necessary. I can BARELY get my motorbike onto a 6.5 bed, and it isn't 8 feet long. With a 6.5 bed you'll probably need to haul the bike with the tailgate down.

I'm a tradesman myself (house painter) and the 5.5 bed is all I need, because I find that too much crap ends up at the front of a 6.5 box where I can't reach it without climbing in... which is a PITA.

I had to buy a 6.5 bed because I wanted a Supercab, but I'm installing a rolling cargo bed and sectioning off the front of it for stuff I rarely need.

5 1/2 vs 6 1/2 truck bed

Thanks.

My Valkyrie is in storage now so i can't measure it. I got the 8' number off the internet so it could be wrong. I thought that maybe with the Valkyrie's front wheel turned to the side, I could get the Valk into a 6-1/2 footer, or at least far enough in for the back wheel to rest on the open gate. I worry that with the 5-1/2 footer, the back tire will extend beyond the open tailgate. I have never loaded the bike on a pick up but my service guy loaded it onto his pickup, though I don't know what size bed he had.

In your post, you mentioned the following words: "Will truck be low - 2WD" and "Puckered", I don't understand what they mean. My truck will be a 4WD and I will use ramps to get the bike into the truck.

I'm worried that the open tailgate won't be able to support the weight of the ramp ends when the bike is on the ramp. I can't find what the load capacity of an open tailgate is.

However, I did see some extra long tailgate cables on the internet that will enable the tailgate to drop lower than 90 degrees (i.e. below the level of the truck bed). That might enable me to put the ends of the ramps directly on the truck bed instead of the tailgate. Then, I wouldn't have to worry about whether the tailgate can handle the weight.

Thanks to you all.

Duke sounds like you need the 6.5' bed. I went with the 6.5' personally to haul my Foreman 500 and landscape equipment. I also like the look of the long bed! Good luck in your search.

I have had probably 1500 - 2k lbs on tailgate. Not to worry it will support it. I suggest a Trifold ramp to spread the weight and make life easier loading it. Here a hint - back the truck up to the entrance of your driveway - that usually lowers the rear of the truck. Firest few times you need a second pair of hands. And then theres proper strapping.... I would not lower the angle of the tailgate.

Your Valkyrie should fit fine in a 5.5' bed. Here are pictures of my Victory Hammer in the back of my truck. It has a 65.7" wheelbase and weights about 670lbs. The Valkyrie has a 66.5" wheelbase and weights about 660lbs. I have ramps wide enough that I can sit on the bike and have room on both sides to put my feet down. Makes getting it out of the truck a lot easier and safer.

Is a 5.5 in truck bed long enough?

It really depends on how you plan to use your truck. If you do light hauling but mostly use it as a daily driver, you might benefit most from choosing a mid-sized pickup with a 5- or 6-FT box. If you need something a little more demanding, a full-sized truck with a 5.5- 6.5- or 8-FT bed might be best.
Typically, a long bed is 8 feet long, a standard bed is 6 feet 5 inches long, and a short bed is roughly 5 feet 8 inches long. It's important to note that these are average measurements , so the exact lengths may differ by a few inches depending on the manufacturer.

What truck has a 6.5

There are three cargo bed options for the 2022 Ford F-150 — a 5.5-foot bed, 6.5-foot bed, and 8-foot bed. The short bed is available exclusively with SuperCrew cab models, while the long bed is available with regular and SuperCab F-150 models.

How long is a 5.5 truck bed?

A Breakdown of Bed Configurations To allow drivers to customize the truck of their dreams, Ford allows them to choose from these beds on the 2021 F-150: Short bed: The smallest of the three, the 5.5-foot short bed measures 67.1 inches long by 50.6 inches wide and gives drivers 52.8 cubic feet of cargo space.
