Age of Empires 3 best Civilization for defence

actually the best turtle civ is china in my opinion, well placed village can provide early semi-free tower which need garrison villager for just in case, build tower bside village to form a well surrounding defense line which can provide good defense while boosting ur economy with tie with Russian which provide -15% villager training time, build wall between them if wanna save some wood cost(separate them wisely, make sure you can transform them into gate), it does provide good enough defense from villager hunt and build another layer of wall later for strategic usage(great wall card does help you buy alot of time unless they come with mass artillery, 15k hp wall, same with fort in campaign), hold the line with minimum investment of banner armies and hand mortars(this one you should adjust accordingly coz AI and human play different style, some ppl would try to siege with mass army so you should produce more for defense if opponent never attack for too long time) until you have 99 villagers for maximum speed of farming, then you can think about either win with mass producing armies or keep rushing to imperial age for max speed of food/gold income and better quality of banner army

there is other civs is great at defense, native civs for example, every barrack is a tower in fact but these civ getting less advantage in late game compare to european civs. russian defensive playstyle is kinda strange coz they're good at rushing with strelet or villager hunt which destroy opponent economy but getting weak in late game coz their unit mostly come with lower hp compare to others. China in the other hand, maybe seems weak but not really, with 10% cheaper cost and 20 extra population, that does make different in late game coz thing only strucked if you play the cheesy way, hand mortars seems kinda lame but still very effective for siege with that range, and its also an anti-artillery, low cost and 1 pop artillery with mortar range, what do you expect, build 20 of them still doesnt feel burden while you can siege enemy with wide angle, buy woods from market for just in case coz its demn cheap at late game

TAD - China for both offense and defense. Good economy, and if you build three layers of walls before sending Great Wall the build time increase isn't much of a problem plus you end up with walls/gates that have 17k in hps(more than a european fort) if you use improved buildings as well.

Asian castles are more effective than european outposts, having 1k more hps for only paying 100 gold over an outpost to build them(1 Flatland Castle adds +10% attack, and hps while Extensive Fortifications adds +4 build limit and +25% hps on top of the +40% hps from Improved Buildings as well). China also has Land Reforms, everything(except walls) build 50% faster and you get more experience upon a buildings completion(+100%).

Defensive...

Russians, them can have up to 3 forts (i am not talking about Revolution) and can rebuild them if any got destroyed.

Offensive...

Japanese, if you have 2 dojos (can send that cards at 3rd age), you will have a lot of good units to send to certain death and have no cost at it.

Other thing, you can have up to 3 or 4 daimyos and 1 shogun that can train up to 10 units at once on the enemy base O.o and the shogun can train siege units if i am not wrong.

Plus they train them ridiculously fast with that age three shipment... I can't remember what's it called at the moment.

Japanese have a unit which can slice enemy units at one shot. I think its a super samurai.

I thought you guys would all say Ports...

Well, it may come as a suprise, but Russia is statistically "the best" at defense.

First, having instant infantry really makes you civ OP, and the Dueling School Card+Fencing School+Standing Army does just that.

Second, National Redoubt is like SO OP it makes me mad. Musketeers building forts? Nit even fair.

Third, Sevastapool Reforms allows you to build a 5 layer wall in 2 minutes around a maxed out city (4 plantations, 4-5 mills, 2 factories, ect.) That is so unfair, if you play against Russians for a long game, the walls are just about touching yours from across the map.

lol.

Offense? Well, everyone can do that. It is the player who is the best. That would be iamgrunt.

What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it's all about?

The russians are also very good on attack because if you build a fort next to the enemy base you can instant spawn musketeers and make other units very fast. also you can use opriniks to crush walls extremely fast with insane seige damage(especially with advanced arsenal) and then destroy their eco with 3x bonus vs settlers. Cossacks are also quite good because of the fact that they take only one population each. Grenadiers can be effective, but as it has been said, dont use stretlets mid to late game, they are just too weak and are only good for a mass unit rush very early on.

So what if it's a handheld? That just means I can keep playing at the dinner table and on the toilet. - demigodxzero
