Phillips is the last surviving member of The Mamas & the Papas.

Cass Elliot, also known as Mama Cass, died aged 32 of heart failure after performing in London on July 29, 1974.

John Phillips, who Phillips divorced in 1969 after seven years of marriage, also died of heart failure aged 65 in 2001.

Denny Doherty died aged 66 of kidney failure in 2007.

Phillips began an affair with Doherty in 1965, while still married to John.

While John eventually forgave her for the infidelity with her bandmate, he was furious when he learned she had an affair with Byrds singer Gene Clark.

He got Phillips booted from the band in June 1966 but by August, she was back.

The couple finally divorced in 1969 with their marriage marred by infidelity. They shared daughter singer Chynna Phillips together.

Phillips also has son Austin Deveraux Hines with actor Grainger Hines and adopted Aron Wilson, who was a friend of Austin's, in the late 1980s.

The iconic singer who later transitioned into acting was married to actor Dennis Hopper for just eight days.

Phillips was most recently in the spotlight in 2009 when she defended her ex-husband John against claims of incest from her stepdaughter Mackenzie Phillips, John's daughter with his first wife Susan Adams.

Mackenzie, now 60, claimed in her memoir that she had a long-term incestuous relationship with her father, claiming he first raped her when she was 19 - on the night before her wedding.

She also recalled how she became pregnant - but had an abortion after not being sure whether the baby belonged to her father or her husband, who had no idea about the secret affair.

But as her life began to spiral out of control due to drugs, the sex became consensual for almost a decade.

She also accused her father of introducing her to heroin when she was still a teenager, missing the vein when he tried to inject her and turning her arm numb.

But Phillips came to John's defense soon after the bombshell claim.

She claimed Mackenzie had already told her family about the alleged affair in 1997, but claimed it was nothing but a joke.

'She told me [about the supposed incestuous relationship], then she called me back and said, "You know I’m joking." I said it wasn’t funny. Mackenzie said, "I guess we have different senses of humour."'

Michelle admitted her ex-husband was no angel but refused to believe that he was capable of sleeping with his own daughter:

'John was a bad parent, and a drug addict. But [expletive deleted] his daughter? If she thinks it’s true, why isn’t she with a good psychiatrist on a couch?

'I think it’s unconscionable that Oprah would let her do her show. I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show.'

She then proceeded to cast doubt on the allegations made by her step-daughter, saying that it was suspicious that the revelation had come just in time for the release of her new book.

'Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently.

'She did Celebrity Rehab and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed... Mackenzie is jealous of her siblings, who have accomplished a lot and did not become drug addicts.'
