Letter Z Book List

This letter z book list features these letter z words: zoo, zoom, & zebra.

1, 2, 3 to the Zoo by Eric Carle is an extremely simple counting book, perfect for teaching counting, number recognition, and one-to-one correspondence. It’s GREAT for younger kiddos.

Put me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire has been one of our family favorites with my littles for years. It’s also been a favorite with my beginning readers. We have the board book and I will admit that the colors are a bit off.

If I Ran the Zoo, in true Dr. Seuss style, has lots of silly, nonsense words as the boy shares all kinds of unusual animals he’d have in his zoo. Kids might like to create their own animals as well!

Z is for Moose by Kelly Bingham is a silly ABC book that kids will love, at least my preschooler and tot do. Moose wants to be in the alphabet book so badly, but what happens when the letter m page arrives? I won’t give away too much, but will just say that m isn’t for moose. Will he be featured on any of the pages? What a creative alphabet book! I recommend it for preschoolers, especially those who already have a solid grasp of the alphabet letters.

Zoom! Zoom! Zoom! I’m Off to the Moon! by Dan Yaccarino is a cute rhyming book about a little boy who visits the moon and returns back home. I love how the text is featured on different parts of the pages, not always in nice, neat rows of text. It makes reading a little more adventuresome. I do hate that the book is hard to find now.

It’s always nice to be able to recommend a nonfiction book in the bunch. Zebras by Catherine Ipcizade is a simple read, perfect for older preschoolers and Kindergartners. The text is simple and the photographs are wonderfully done. She has other books in this African Animal series, too.

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell is an adorable book that works great as an animal guessing game. Just like I Went Walking, enough of the animal is showing that the child can guess what it is before lifting the flaps. It’s also fun to make animal noises. This one is sure to be a winner, especially for toddlers!

On Beyond Zebra! by Dr. Seuss is a lesser-known book that explores the “what if” idea of letters beyond letter z. It’s cute, although kind of long; and I recommend it for older preschoolers, who would probably get the humor a little more.

Yes, I do realize that Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann does not feature the word zoo, except for a sign above the zoo entrance; but it’s SUCH an adorable {almost wordless} book that my tots have all loved, loved, loved! My kids have all had fun trying to find the balloon in each picture.

Gail Gibbons’ books are a MUST for older preschoolers and Kindergartners. I have used them all the way through third grade at times. Her books are very informative. Sometimes, I feel like there’s so much information in them, it’s like drinking from a fire hydrant! Zoo is no exception. I do like that her images are always full of details, so younger kids can look at those while older kids can learn about the behind-the-scenes of running a zoo.
