Can I leave school during lunch

In public schools, are teachers allowed to leave school during school hours to get food during lunch time? Or can they order uber eats? Or is it expected you order from the canteen only?

I just recently got a contract for next year. It's my first year teaching, so I'm not sure what the rules are for this.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the answers. I've read and up-voted all your comments.

You just need to know the school policy. You'll usually need to sign out and back in for a WHS perspective if there's an emergency they know if you're on site or not.

I worked at a school that backed onto Woolworths, lots of teachers would duck out during lunch to get things for dinner so they didn't have to go after school then pop it in the staffroom fridge. There was Also a great sushi shop closer to my classroom than the office, it was great, I spent so much money on lunch though!

level 1

It really depends on your school. I’d save your money and make your lunch 😊

level 1

I've done both. It's generally good form to let the office know about either Uber Eats or leaving the grounds (and bribing them with an extra salad or chips can make your life easier).

Just make sure that you're back for class or yard duty

level 2

I always ask office ladies if they want a potato cake - always be nice to office staff!

level 1

I've never left during school hours out of fear of loosing my car park haha.

level 2

lmao. I never even considered this, but it's definitely something to remember.

level 1

My school is mixed. You can leave but on staff only days, we're not allowed to be seen out as the community will judge us and complain about us not doing our jobs.

level 2

Teachers - trusted with children...

But not trusted to do their job.

level 2

School management should put their big person pants on.

level 1

ACT I've seen teachers do it in every school I've worked or done placement in

level 1

I’ve worked at schools that frown on it and have been told it’s a duty of care issue. Even if not on duty you are on ‘standby’ if anything happens and you are needed.

level 2

Check with your Union. In QLD it was made quite clear that unpaid time off duty was exactly that.

level 1

Depends on the school, but it's fine in the ACT as a general rule of thumb

level 1

Sometimes my faculty sends someone out to grab food for all of us. Very rarely does someone go out just to get their own food.

Our office staff would have zero patience for dealing with Uber Eats deliveries!

level 1

Depends on the school. Most are ok with it if you do not have class and you tell your supervisor and sign in and out at the front office. Your usually suspected to ask your faculty if they want anything out of courtesy if your going.

level 1

Depends on some schools. I been to schools who r happy for u to sign in and out. Others school it’s frown upon because during ur DOTT their maybe an emergency where u have to jump in

level 2

Shouldn't have to jump in to anything on your DOTT, assuming it's the same as NCT in my state.

level 1

We get Uber eats quite regularly but we tell the drivers to come to the side gate of the school and meet them there so they don’t go to the office.

level 1

we were allowed off site to get lunch, but we had to let the office know we were out (wrote name down in a folder)... just in case there was an emergency they know who is at school and who isnt.

level 1

In Canberra - yes, most schools are pretty chill.

In Perth - depends on the school. My small independent school is fine with it, previous gov and catholic schools have not been

level 1

Consider if there is an evacuation or drill, you may have duties or people might be looking. For you. Try and find the policy on your school portal. Most likely you’ll just have to sign out whenever you leave.

Students to call me by first name or family name?

How long can a teacher keep you in at lunch Qld?

These guidelines say, “Where students are detained after school to complete school work, or to undertake additional or new work or duties: the time of detention should not exceed forty-five minutes.” This means that teachers can only keep students after the bell for a maximum of 45 minutes.

Can teachers leave school for lunch UK?

Is there a right to a lunch break? Yes, any teacher who works for more than one school session on any school day must be given a break of 'reasonable length' between sessions or between the hours of 12 noon and 2pm.
