Can anybody point me in the right direction of a guide that explains how to rip a DVD to play on a ps3?

I have done loads of reading but I am getting a headache trying to understand everything.

Here is what I want to do;

I have a large collection of DVD's I want to store on my PS3 Hard Drive (I have ordered a 320GB HDD), not interestied in streaming or using external drives (that should make life simpler).

I have a Cambridge Audio 340r receiver connected to the PS3 via optical and would like to have 5.1 included in the rips.

From what I have read I can just decrypt the VOB file and transfer that to the PS3 and ply from there, however if i use a .264 codec(?) to rip I can compress the file without loosing noticeable pictue / sound quality.

Is there all in one software out there that does this? (I understand I wil probably have to use another piece of software to decrypt the DVD if necessary).

Your help is appreciated.

Also one last question, I understand the PS3 will upscale a SD DVD, will it do the same for the ripped file?

You cant rip retail DVD's directly on to the PS3 hard drive due to the copy protection.

The easiest way will be to rip the DVD to your PC HDD, using a program that will remove the copy protection, then burn to a blank DVD and use this DVD to copy the film onto the PS3 HDD. You can also copy across using a Media Server. Set up the server on your PC, copy the DVD to your PC HDD, then use the media server to copy across from the PC to the PS3.

However, be aware that any video media played from the PS3 HDD will only output in 2.0 Digital and not 5.1 Surround Sound. Don't know if this the same for videos stored on external HDD's thou.

If you want 5.1 Sound then you will either have to use the DVD normally or stream from your PC. I have quite a few region 1 DVDs that I wanted to play on the PS3, so I ripped them to my PC HDD, then streamed them using TVersity, and still got the 5.1 sound through streaming.

I used a program called Magic DVD Ripper, very quick and easy use. Creates a single vob file so the film is not split into chunks, and retains the 5.1 sound. You can then burn this vob file to a blank dvd and then rip it to the PS3 HDD, but as I said above, you wont get 5.1 sound when playing videos from the XMB.

Also the PS3 will not upscale media from the HDD, only DVD's played normally.

Thanks everybody but I think I have confused everybody, to calrify;

I will use my pc to decrypt the dvd, rip it then encode it using h.264 codec (this is the part i dont know how to do)

Copy the file to ps3

Play on ps3.

Only being able to play 2 channel via the ps3 is a no go for me, are you sure this is the case?

As far as streeaming is concerned, the reason I dont want to do this is my only pc is a laptop and is not always at home, so if i or my family wanted to watch a movie whilst the laptop is not there it will not be possible. Also there is alot of traffic passing through the router at most times. really didnt want to go down the streaming road.

Isn't h.264 used only for HD Video rips (720p, 1080i, 1080p)?

If so, what would be the point of converting a SD DVD to h.264, surely you can't turn a SD Video rip into a HD rip just by converting it. The info has to be there first, if SD DVD are 576i in resolution then that would be the highest you will get regardless of how you rip it and convert it.

Also, pretty certain that you will only get 2.0 Digtial from the XMB.

hmm I am staring to think that the 320GB drive I have ordered is a waste of time :(

I really should have asked these questions first....

So to clarify the best way to get the best picure quality and 5.1 sound is to use dvd shrink and keep the file under 4GB?

I suppose divx is a no go aswell then? (I am pretty sure divx can handle 5.1)

Looks like it. Magic DVD Ripper also will shrink the DVD to any size you choose and keep the 5.1 sound, but as I said before you wont get 5.1 sound when playing from the PS3 HDD.

Not sure about Dvix. I got it when they had a free offer on a few months ago, tried with a DVD I have ripped to my PC with 5.1 sound, but when converted to Dvix, even though I choose to keep the 5.1 soundtrack it only came out as stereo when I played it back.
