Top packing tips

  1. Cushioning
There should be enough cushioning around the item to make sure it isn't damaged, and also to make sure it can't cause injury to our staff, or damage our equipment or other mail.
  2. Use the right packaging for your item
We've got packaging products to suit many and varied needs at your local Post Office. Check mailing boxes, bags and other packaging options for details and prices.
  3. Sending keys, pens, USBs or CDs
Never put rigid or inflexible items in a regular paper envelope - even if you think they're small enough. They could easily be damaged by our machines or torn from the envelope and lost.

Note: Marking it 'Fragile' or 'Handle with care' isn't enough

While we don't actually offer a 'Fragile' service, we'll always try to handle items with care. But writing on your item won't protect it when it's in a mail bag or being processed through sorting equipment.

How to pack different items

Don't forget to check at your local Post Office for mailing boxes, bags or bubble wrap to suit your needs.

  1. Wrap each item in tissue paper, newspaper or similar material
  2. Once wrapped, return them to the box you bought them in if possible, or put them in a similar type of box or container
  3. Wrap this inner box or container in extra cushioning like bubble wrap to limit movement
  4. Put this in a sturdy mailing box
  5. Close with heavy-duty packing tape and address correctly

  1. Check at your local Post Office for suitable packaging, e.g. rigid mailer. Otherwise you can protect the front and back of the item with thick cardboard, and then place it in reinforced packaging such as a padded bag
  2. Close with heavy-duty packing tape and address correctly

  1. Perishable items can only be sent in certain circumstances. Check our dangerous and prohibited goods and packaging guide (PDF 1.2MB) for all quarantine restrictions and packaging requirements.
  2. Wrap items in a sealed plastic bag and place suitable padding around it. Depending on the product's size, shape and substance, you may want to consider something like shredded paper, biodegradable foam beads or a recycled paper pulp product (similar to what egg cartons are made from)
  3. Put this in a sturdy cardboard mailing box lined with absorbent material
  4. Enclose the address and return address inside the mailing box, just in case the packaging needs to be opened or inspected by authorities
  5. Close with heavy-duty packing tape and address correctly
  6. Write the word 'PERISHABLE' on the top and on one side of the box

  1. Sharp-edged or pointed items can only be sent in certain circumstances. Check our dangerous and prohibited goods and packaging guide (PDF 1.2MB) for full restrictions and packaging requirements
  2. Encase blades or any other sharp-edged or pointed component in a close fitting, protective covering, such as cardboard or a thick wad of tightly rolled newspaper, strong enough to ensure the contents don't pierce the outer packaging. Make sure there's plenty of extra padding around the tip and secure with heavy-duty packing tape
  3. Wrap the item in extra cushioning like bubble wrap for extra protection and to limit movement
  4. Put this in a rigid container
  5. Enclose the address and return address inside the container, just in case the packaging needs to be opened or inspected by authorities
  6. Close carefully with heavy duty packing tape, including taping all edges and seams, and address correctly

Can you ship a box with holes in it?

Locate all UPC's and labels on the box. Make sure the box is solid and not torn. If any holes or tears are visible, double-tape them on both sides with heavy packing tape.

Can you ship USPS with any box?

Step 1: Pick Your Box Remember, size and weight determine price: Packages must not weigh more than 70 lbs. In most cases, packages may not be more than 108 inches in total length and girth (130 inches for USPS Retail Ground®).

What boxes are okay to ship?

Corrugated cardboard makes the best material for shipping boxes. Boxes made of corrugated cardboard are sturdy enough to ensure the safe packaging and shipping of fragile items.

Can you bring your own box to ship?

You may use your own packaging if boxes are sturdy and undamaged with all flaps intact. Chipboard boxes, such as gift or shoe boxes, must be packed into a corrugated outer box. Use double-wall boxes for heavier items.
