Good luck and enjoy.

 Mike V,
To make everything safe for you at the range and on the field, i would forget even thinking about shoving a diff. round in the chamber of a .300 WBY MAGNUM chamber.....considering that you have a .300 WBY MAG, the .300 WIN MAG will NOT have as much explosion energy, meaning that your barrel and chamber will handle it, but that's not the thing, you more than likely will get "no good" ballistics, the bullet will not fit quit right in the chamber, ive never tried it, but it must be a lil' different. Let's put it this way, all rifles barrels and chambers are built and designed to withstand so much pressure from the bullet exploding off, if you have a .220 Swift, shoot .220 Swift loads, if you have a .300 WBY MAG...shoot .300 WBY MAG loads. I know that your probally thinking that you'd like to put the .300 Win in it because it's cheaper, but if that's what your worried about then just get your rifle chambered in the .300 Win. I just want to tell you that it's not a good thing to get into, starting to put different loads into different chambers....it can be bad. There are some larger loads that fit into a .30-06 chamber, now like i said the 30-06 chamber was made to take the energy from the 30-06 load, so if you put a larger load into it, and yes it'll fit nice and tight, but the explosion may be way to powerful and the steel will crack up and explode in your face...or the barrel will split, that's why I want you to stay safe and worry free while your out at the range. Hope this helps....anymore questions feel free to ask, and look for my group called ".300 Weatherby Magnum"....I'm the administrator of it, HunterChasse is me....just join the group and ill accept you in. We can talk more in depth about the .300 WBY MAG there.

You shouldn't even own a gun if your going to ask a stupid question like that.

Mike V:
Hunterchasse - Thank you for the great information. Price was one reason , but also availability, as well as not being sure if Weatherby designed this chamber for both type loads. My dad got this for a great deal on the entire hunting outfit for my wife to give me as a gift, and I am unfamiliar with the Weatherby line.
I had no idea they were doing this for me, and I am blessed to have them in my life, forget the gift.
I am glad to see there are still nice folks willing to help answer legitimate questions without sarcasm and distain.
The only stupid questions are the ones that no one asks...... feel free to keep your posts to yourself Peterpan.

cleterpan:
You're right , sorry about my sarcastic comment. Your family must care about you alot to get you such a wonderful gift. Enjoy your new gun, and welcome to the Weatherby Nation Mike.

Mods...if this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it.

I'll preface this picture with, this was not shot out of my rifle.

A group of us were out shooting the day before the November rifle season opener last Friday and I was collecting everyone's brass. Well...I got to sorting through it and found this:

Can you shoot 300 Win mag in a 300 Weatherby

My first thought was, "where'd the case neck go?", that and the shoulders looked like something out of a Weatherby, but the case head says 300 Win Mag.

It took a while to figure what was going on, but when the guy who owned the rifle said he was shooting a Weatherby Vanguard, both my dad & I looked at each other and had an idea of what happened. Apparently he was shooting a 300 Wby Mag and feeding it 300 Win Mag factory ammo. He said it was the ammo given to him by the guy he bought the rifle from.

I thought it was interesting.

Likely not the best accuracy, but being belted it headspaced on the belt and was likely safe. I've done that with 7rems out of a 7stw once or twice. The neck is nearly totally gone on that one.

You're exactly right. 300 Win fired in a 300 Weatherby.

I found some 270 Winchester cases the other day. They looked odd to me right away. They were clearly fired out of a 30-06. They were not 270s necked up. You could tell because the length was around 2.530" and the edge of the case mouth was smaller in diameter. The primers showed absolutely no flattening indicating pretty low chamber pressure.

I can only imagine how frustrated that person was trying to get that combination to shoot accurately. I don't know if the person ever realized the problem. There were 16 cases like that.

That is amazing the shooter never realized the difference. If he was a handloader I think he would have noticed the short necks and stopped shooting.

I have seen a few SA cases shot in a longer chamber. The shoulder is gone and there were four splits evenly spaced for the last 1/4".

I'm positive he wasn't a reloader.

I think he is just one them guys that pulls the rifle & ammo out a couple days before deer season and decides to go hunting.

What he sounds like is a moron, who bought a rifle from another moron, that's one day gonna get himself or someone else hurt because he's too dumb to look on the barrel to know the difference between a rifle being chambered in .300 Win Mag, and .300 Wby Mag.
