Here’s my basic rundown that I’ve posted before. I’ve been to every DMB show at Alpine since 2003 (except 2019) ask any questions you may have …..

Any seats in the pavilion at Alpine Valley are good (except the limited obstructed view seats behind pilars). The pit is absolutely huge. I recommend the pit.

The lots always open early. Like 1-2pm. The lots are part of the experience. You need to get there early and hang out and walk around and see all of the crazy. It’s a tailgate party unlike many others. The blue lot is my favorite area to park because you don’t get shoved down too close to the venue and have trouble driving out. Yellow lot is where the party is at though. Last couple times the green lot was actually camping because they are having trouble actually selling out the venue for DMB. If there isn’t camping in the green lot you def don’t want to park there. It’s a loooong walk into the venue. You’ll get funneled into the green lot if you come in the main road from the direction of the main ski and resort entrance. You want to come in from the other direction (off the interstate) to get to yellow lot.

There is camping at local state parks around. That’s a good time too. There are just a few small towns around so if you want to stay in a hotel you are gonna have to drive. Chance of you getting a hotel room at the resort or in elk horn are slim. I wouldn’t be surprised if the elk horn hotel is already sold out with people who preordered rooms for the rumored weekends.

There aren’t as many beer stalls and bathrooms as there are at other venues so the lines can get long. If you have seen the band before it’s always a good move to go during a super popular song like Crash or Satellite or Stay to get beers and go to the bathroom. This is generally good advice at any show but there really is a more limited set of facilities for pavilion people, unless you want to go and walk all the way up the hill (trust me you won’t).

Take a picture at the top of the hill when you get there and I personally suggest that during the encore break one night you go and walk up the hill to watch the encore from the top of the lawn. You’ll understand when you get there, it’s an experience your unlikely to have at another venue.

If you do sit in the lawn there are a few beer vendors who are stationed under the lawn repeater speakers. If you don’t get in and get the front rows of the lawn it’s better to just get there later and then stand near one of those speaker stacks in the lawn. The audio is good there and the view of the screens will be where you spend most of your viewing. In the lawn it’s too far away to really see what’s going on in the stage if you aren’t in the first third of the lawn. Honestly I don’t like trying to rush to the front of the lawn anymore. I’m too old. We get pavilion seats every time. And with DMB not selling out Alpine it’s not as hard to get pavilion or even put tickets for the weekend.

EDIT: Specifically tailgate related. Bring shade. There is none in the lots and it will be killer without something. Bring cash, there’s always people selling stuff and it’s fun stuff to buy sometimes. There is an outdoor merch booth. It will have a line that’s super long for people getting posters before the show. They have been opening at 4:30 this year. There are undercovers trolling the lots like roaches. The county makes bank off tickets for pot which are funny enough $420. It’s a citation and isn’t a misdemeanor or anything like that, but don’t be super obvious about smoking if you are gonna do it in the lots.

Can you tailgate at Alpine Valley Music Theatre?

Set amid the greenery of East Troy, Wisconsin, Alpine Valley Music Theatre is one of the Midwest’s most beloved music venues. When it opened in 1977 it was the largest amphitheater in the United States. It has continued to be an important summer venue, boasting a long — and sometimes tragic — music history. This is where legendary blues rocker Stevie Ray Vaughan and four others died in a helicopter crash after a show with Eric Clapton in August 1990. But it’s also seen a near endless supply of good times with major national tours, iconic performances and world-class festivals taking place under its wooden roof pavilion.

Alpine Valley Music Theatre Performers

Blues and soul crooner Boz Scaggs headlined the amphitheater’s opening show, followed by Jimmy Buffett and Aerosmith, the latter who’ve performed here over a dozen times since. Other regulars include The Grateful Dead, who played Alpine Valley a whopping 20 times throughout the 1980s. Offshoot Dead & Company and Phish have followed in their footsteps with multiple performances here as well. In between hosting massive touring shows, the venue holds festivals like Lollapalooza, Ozzfest and the 2019 edition of Farm Aid.

Planning Your Visit to Alpine Valley Music Theatre

A show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre goes well with a trip to the adjacent Alpine Valley Resort. Grab a bite at the resort’s bistro or Valley View Lodge — the Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds are a must. Otherwise, downtown East Troy offers a great selection of dining and drinking spots including 2894 On Main for healthy grass-fed meats and veggie-friendly dishes, or East Troy Brewery for filling sandwiches and surf and turf options. Head slightly west for a local brew or kombucha at The Hive Taproom, or go south toward the venue to get fresh pizza on the farm at Grassway Organics.
