How far would you drive for a cult favorite fried chicken sandwich? Chick-fil-A fans can now slash that distance considerably. A big, red food truck is bringing that beloved – and at times controversial – sandwich to towns throughout the Mid-Willamette Valley. 

Chick-Fil-A Food Truck PDX made its first visit to the Salem area on Nov. 7 to Dayspring Fellowship in Keizer. Since then, it has made near-weekly visits to Newberg, McMinnville, Molalla, Albany, Wilsonville, Woodburn and Keizer. 

The truck posts up in a parking lot, frequently at churches but also at businesses including Ace Hardware and Wilco Farm stores, typically serving from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The line forms early, people standing in physically distanced clumps, to order from the truck's abbreviated menu of both regular and spicy chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets, and waffle fries. 

Brian Davis, who owns the brick-and-mortar Chick-fil-A location at Clackamas Promenade, is the business owner behind the food truck. Davis declined to be interviewed, but offered the following prepared statement. 

“Chick-fil-A Clackamas Promenade is excited to offer a temporary, off-site pop-up location to customers via our Chick-fil-A Food Truck, which will allow us to safely, and conveniently serve our customers. It’s a pleasure serving our Salem area community, and we strive to provide an exceptional dining experience beyond the four walls of our restaurant.”

For years the Georgia-based chicken sandwich chain has faced backlash for its donations to anti-LGBTQ groups. CEO Dan Cathy once said supporting same-sex marriage would invite God's judgment on the country.

In 2019 the company made changes to its charitable initiatives, but still receives criticism on social media.

Though Davis declined further comment, he does indicate that the weekly pop-ups are temporary, so get your sandwich while you can.
