Rollercoaster of Emotions

Lovers come and go from our lives, but their impact can be felt even years later. We've bared our souls, our bodies, our pasts as well as our hopes for the future to them. And then they end up as sudden strangers or strained acquaintances.

Struggling to accept such a loss and eventually move on can send you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Heartbroken, you may try to deny ever loving the person at all. You may feel confused as you vacillate between attraction and anger. Or you may express sad reminiscence, acceptance of your loss and a desire to find new love.

The more brazen of us may even thank our exes for breaking our hearts because we weren't right for one another anyway. Wherever you are in the struggle to forget an ex-lover, here's a playlist of pop, rock, and country songs to let you know that you're not alone.

Reader Poll

1. "I'm Movin' On" by Rascal Flatts

This is a heart wrenching song. Whatever ghosts and demons the narrator in this 2000 country song has, they helped him wreak havoc on his relationship. He has finally let go of the blame, regret and guilt. Having lost everything that is important to him, he finds strength and hope in moving on.

2. "Shout Out To My Ex" by Little Mix

Take this, former boyfriend! Full of rowdy spirit, this catchy 2016 pop song involves the narrator thanking a former lover of four years for breaking her heart. Without him, she wouldn't be the strong, happy person she is now:

Shout out to my ex, you're really quite the man.
You made my heart break, and that made me who I am.
Here's to my ex. Hey, look at me now.
Well, I'm all the way up; I swear you'll never, you'll never bring me down.

3. "Ain't Worth the Whiskey" by Cole Swindell

The narrator in this 2014 country song has run into an old lover in a bar tonight, and he's not about to let her know that she still gets to him. He's willing to drink to a good country song, a buddy he hasn't seen in years, or a hard work at week.

But he won't be drowning his sorrows in whiskey over lost love. Because she just ain't worth it.

I don't care that you done me wrong
'Cause I've already moved on
I don't care what his name is
Girl it is what it is.
I won't waste a dime
Or the bartender's time
Trying to catch a buzz over the thought of us.

4. "I Hate U I Love U" by Gnash (Featuring Olivia O'Brien)

In this pop ballad from 2016, both partners are having trouble putting their broken relationship behind them. While one of them has found a new partner and is making small steps to try to heal, his ex ruminates in her emotional wounds:

I hate you, I love you,
I hate that I love you.
Don't want to but I can't put nobody else above you.

This makes me want to shake her and tell her, "Girl, you stop it right now! Get yourself to the gym and make yourself the hottest ex-girlfriend that boy has ever had."

5. "DONE" by The Band Perry

Don't go looking for the chick in this 2013 country song to shed tears over her ex. She knows that sometimes it's necessary to burn a bridge. (That's my kinda lady!) Tired of put-downs and being strung along, she's decided she is DONE.

I'm through, with you
You're one bridge I'd like to burn
Scatter the ashes, smash the urn
I'm through with you ... .

6. "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson

The narrator in this 2004 pop song is so completely over her ex. He blew his once chance with her, and now he is out of sight out of mind. Strong and sassy, she feels like she can breathe for the first time and is finally realizing her potential. (Woo hoo! Go girl!) In other words, "Thanks for breaking up with me. You did me a freaking favor."

7. "Like I Would" by Zayn

Under the influence, the narrator of this 2016 pop song has lost his inhibitions. He calls his former partner to unleash some candor her way.

Although he is still stuck in the past emotionally, his ex-girlfriend has found someone new. However, her new flame can't love her better than he does:

He won't touch you like I do
He won't love you like I would
He don't know your body
He don't do you right
He won't love you like I would
Love you like I would.

8. "Smile" by Lily Allen

The young woman in this 2006 rock song has a serious dark streak. She was left heartbroken and mentally "messed up" by a former lover who now wants her back. However, his tears and regret now make her smile. Can you imagine being her next beau?

9. "Bet You Still Think of Me" by Blake Shelton

If you're guessing that Blake Shelton wrote this 2016 country song with ex-wife Miranda Lambert in mind, he's already acknowledged that. In it, the narrator reflects on a past relationship, wondering where his ex-partner is and what she is doing. She was always the wild and free type. He still thinks of her and imagines it's mutual. (I'm not sure I'd give him the satisfaction of knowing that.)

10. "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye (Featuring Kimbra)

One moment you're lovers, and then it's over. Before you know it, the love of your life is just somebody that you used to know. They block you on Facebook. Unfollow you on Instagram. It gets all weird.

The guy in this 2011 pop ballad hung on to his ex's assurance that they could still be friends. But maybe he was too clingy. She changed her number, had her friends retrieve her last remaining stuff. It's left him still grieving. Yep, this one's going to hurt for a long time, especially because he seems like the sensitive type.

11. "I Wish" by Toni Braxton and Babyface

Forget about being all mature about a breakup. In this 2014 song, the narrator makes a number of wishes for her ex-lover and his new partner. She hopes that his current sweetheart:

  • cheats on him and makes him cry
  • gives him a miserable disease
  • spends all his money and
  • has a baby boy (because a girl would mean the world to a woman).

12. "Send My Love (To Your Lover)" by Adele

In this 2015 pop song, Adele informs her ex-lover that all past transgressions are forgiven. She accepts responsibility for her part of the relationship gone wrong in addition to casting blame on him. Instead of feeling jealousy towards her ex's new partner, she wishes the couple well and makes it clear she's only looking forward.

That's very adult of you, Adele.

13. "Should've Gone to Bed" by Plain White T's

Oh, the drunk dial. The guy in this 2013 pop song is fine all day long. But in the evenings, he downs a few drinks, knows he should just sleep it off, but can't resist calling his ex-girlfriend around midnight. The next morning, he can't even recall exactly what he said, but he has a sinking feeling it's not good.

Reader Poll

14. "Don't Wanna Know" by Maroon 5 (Featuring Kendrick Lamar)

In this 2016 song, friends of the narrator know better than to bring up his ex-lover's name. All of his thoughts lead back to her. He wonders who she's with, who's loving her, whether she thinks of him, and if she's happy. But then he wrestles with whether he really wants to know the answers.

15. "I Got the Boy" by Jana Kramer

Seeing a high school boyfriend's wedding photo in the local newspaper has sparked old memories for the woman in this 2015 country song. She recalls their teenage dreams and the adventures they shared, then contrasts that with the image of the grown up, newly married man.

I got the first kiss and she'll get the last.
She's got the future and I got the past.
I got the class ring, she got the diamond and wedding band.
I got the boy and she got the man.

16. "When She Was Mine" by Lawson

The heartsick narrator in this song from 2012 believed his life was perfect when he was with his girlfriend, but now he is constantly reminded of what is missing from his life. Although he has tried to wipe her from his memory, he finds that he needs her.

17. "You Suck" by Abigail Breslin

The narrator in this funny 2014 song has an ex-boyfriend who was a player, so now she lets him know that she was she was never all that into him anyway. She doesn't appreciate his lying, he's not as hot as he thinks he is, and she certainly doesn't wish him well. So there.

18. "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green

What do you do when your honey ditches you for someone with more flash and money? In this 2010 pop song, you say "forget you" (the clean version) or "f**k you" (the dirty version).

The narrator's love interest was a gold digger and has left him for someone for a Ferrari and a lot more Benjamins. Sorry, buddy! Next time, pick a girl who isn't quite as shallow.

19. "Love Will Remember" by Selena Gomez

The narrator in this 2013 pop song is so disillusioned. She doesn't understand how mutual promises and expressions of emotion could simply be gone now:

You said you loved me, I said I loved you back
What happened to that? What happened to that?
All your promises and all them plans we had
What happened to that? What happened to that?

20. "Missing You" by John Waite

This narrator in this classic rock song has been left by the woman he loves. He hears others talk about her and struggles with the memories. John Waite originally recorded the the song in 1984 then released it as a duet in 2007 with Alison Krauss, a bluegrass/country artist.

Questions & Answers

Question: I just got rejected by someone I really liked. What do you recommend doing to get over him?

Answer: First, realize that everyone has experienced personal rejection like this, so please don't be so hard on yourself. You may be beating yourself up with questions like, "Is there something wrong with me?" That's completely unnecessary and self-defeating, so if you're doing that, then kindly stop now. Consider this rejection to be ONLY ONE data point in a lifetime of data about yourself. Your self-esteem is much stronger than this one little data point, right?

Although the rejection feels intensely personal because it's fresh, we also understand that sometimes we don't understand what motivates our attraction (or lack of it) to someone else. Another person can have all the "right" qualities, but oddly, we just may not be feeling it and can't quite articulate the vague reasons why. Attraction may be hard to explain or turn on or off. There are important biochemical and even genetically-driven components to attraction that you can't possibly change.

In getting over him, focus on positivity and yourself. Don't avoid him and try not to ruminate. Humor helps a lot so seek out funny movies, cat videos, a comedy club with friends, or whatever will make you laugh. Also try to exercise because endorphins are the body's natural "feel-good drug." Do something fun and rewarding with friends that will boost your mood in a healthy way (e.g., group mani/pedis, escape room outing). Listen to positive, mood-boosting music such as the Positive Vibe Playlist: Happy and Uplifting Songs to Put You in a Good Mood https://hubpages.com/playlists/Feel-Great-Playlist... If you write, paint, enjoy photography, do crafts, or otherwise artistically express yourself, consider some projects that will constructively occupy you and help move you forward. Of course, also talk to someone you trust about your feelings during this time so that you can keep things in perspective and focus on the future.

I'm sorry you had to face this, but I feel confident that you'll get through it with some time and support.

Question: I want to text my former boyfriend from 8 months ago how he helped me and that I miss our friendship, but we don’t really like each other much. What should I do?

Answer: You say you really don't like one another much. No matter what you call yourselves -- friends, romantic partners or strangers -- without liking and mutual respect, you'll only bicker and argue. If you feel strongly, perhaps you should have a discussion. Start it with a text to the effect of, "I miss our friendship, but we don't seem to like one another much." Make sure he knows what you want (friendship vs. getting back together) and thank him for talking to you.

Question: Should I contact a former girlfriend from high school to catch up and see how her life turned out? I'm married, but I have always wondered what happened to her.

Answer: Contacting a former lover to see how they’re doing is risky. Many people do it using Facebook or other social media sites. Think hard before you reach out.

The best thing that could happen is that you satisfy your curiosity. (Then what?). Other things could also occur. These might include an emotional or physical affair, which happens more often than you might imagine in this situation, disappointing news about how her life turned out, your respective spouses feeling uncomfortable about the rekindled friendship, or you feeling disappointed or rejected if she doesn’t respond like you expect or you have nothing in common anymore.

There are reasons you broke up and lost contact. Leave the past in the past if you want to remain happily married. If you have any doubts, then ask your wife for permission to contact your old lover and be ready for her questions.

Question: How do I stop feeling jealous about my ex's new boyfriend?

Answer: You believe he has something you don't and are jealous for two main reasons:

1) you're still emotionally invested in your ex and the memories of your relationship

2) you perceive that her new boyfriend satisfies her relationship needs better.

Here are some ideas:

1) Ignore them. Since you must actually pay attention to someone to be jealous, consider how you can extricate your ex and her new relationship from your life. Unfriend/unfollow them both on social media, don't discuss them with others, don't take your ex's phone calls if she's trying to be "just friends" with you, etc. Being strangers with them will allow you to simply not know the details.

2) Reduce your emotional investment in your ex. Delete the photos of you and her. Also, either throw away or put away in a sealed box all the memorabilia from your relationship (e.g., cards, gifts, letters). Out of sight, out of mind.

3) Do a realistic memory review on your ex and the relationship. When we’ve suffered heartbreak or are missing someone, there’s a tendency to skip over the bad memories. We don’t generally recall them as cold, untrustworthy, selfish, critical, callous, aloof, etc. You may be over-glamorizing your ex by conveniently forgetting all of those negative traits. Remember her as she actually was in the relationship with you before you broke up. Make a list of descriptors with specific examples. When you’re feeling jealous, look back over the list and be happy she is someone else’s problem.

4) Take a good look at your own self-esteem, and work on building your own happiness (whatever that means for you). If you concentrate on your own success, health, and happiness and being the most positive person you can be, you will attract others your way. Eventually, one of those others will be a new lady friend who will make you completely forget about your old girlfriend. Make peace that your ex is gone and the rest will fall into place for you personally.

Question: My ex-boyfriend and I broke up 3 months ago, and I haven’t gotten over him. He has a new girlfriend that he is texting, but he’s also chatting to me. Although I want him back, he’s giving mixed signals about his feelings. His girl cannot find out that he still has feelings for me. What should I do?

Answer: You're allowing him to have two girlfriends. Are you okay with that -- being his "side chick"? Have an honest conversation about how you both feel and what you each want and get all the information out into the open. Then make a decision. Don't participate in a secret relationship. This cheats you and the other girl. She may not want a guy who goes behind her back and chats up another girl. He's untrustworthy. Honor yourself above all.

Question: Why can’t I stop thinking about my ex so much? She broke me and I haven’t loved anyone since her, but she hates me. What do I do to stop thinking about my ex?

Answer: You don't say how long it's been since you and your partner broke up, but breakups involve the death or demise of a love relationship. As a result, we grieve lost love. All of a sudden there are changes to your social support system, your identity (e.g., being "x's boyfriend"), daily routine, perhaps even the place you live and your future plans.

Therefore, allow yourself the time to process what went wrong between you, especially if it was a bad breakup. Try to talk to a trustworthy, understanding friend who values your privacy so they can help you sort out your feelings. Just being listened to helps. Concentrate on your own happiness and becoming healthier, both mentally and physically. Make sure to exercise and socialize, even if you don't feel like it.

If you are in current significant distress or if you are still having difficulty after six months or so, consider seeking a qualified mental health counselor so you can identify and resolve any unhealthy behaviors or issues in your past relationships. You cannot control how your ex feels about you (her "hating" you), so just concentrate on yourself and moving on. Let her be in charge of herself and you just do you.

Question: What do I do if my ex-boyfriend is making rumors up about me, and showing his girlfriend fake texts that apparently I sent?

Answer: Respond to rumors and innuendo with apathy. The more oxygen you give them, the more you fan the flames of jealousy. Turn the other cheek (as hard as that may be) and you'll find that it will improve.

Question: My ex cheated on me with multiple girls. I still love him, but I also want to get over him for my sake. What can I do?

Answer: Your ex didn't deserve your love, and some would say that what you feel for him isn't love at all because it isn't based on trust or mutual respect. That's not your fault.

Turn your efforts radically inward, investing in what makes you a happier, more fulfilled, better person. Maybe that means beauty pampering (a spa day, a new hair style), reinvesting in time with friends, taking up a new skill or hobby, volunteering, seeing funny movies or doing things that make you laugh, writing in a journal or otherwise creatively expressing yourself, or committing yourself to exercise. Not only will this personal fulfillment campaign help you now but it will also eventually draw healthier relationships your way.

Question: How do I get guys to actually love me instead of leaving me and making me heartbroken?

Answer: While there's no surefire guarantee against a broken heart, you'll increase your chances tremendously by loving yourself first and boosting your self-confidence. If YOU don't value you, how can you expect others to do so? This includes not permitting anyone in your social circle to treat you disrespectfully, even in small ways.

Call people out for their inappropriate behavior and clearly communicate your needs, feelings, and expectations. Don't put up with lying, cheating, and rude behavior, and don't engage in it either. Sometimes heartbreak is a mismatch in needs or miscommunication while at other times it's maliciously motivated. Learn the difference.

Tejasvi - Go ahead and call out of the blue. Do not text. It's the pandemic and it's super okay to check on how people are doing. You don't have to have an excuse. Just say that you were thinking about him and were wondering how he was doing. Don't spill your guts. Take it slow.

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on July 13, 2020:

Chile - Although you technically didn't actually ask a question, I can give you my perspective. If you are still geographically distanced from the ex, I don't see what's realistically changed in your actual relationship with him. Even if you got back together, how would you expect it to be different between you this time? If you're still interested in pursuing the romance, you need to know how he feels about you. He seems to have moved on, but you could do a friendly check-in to verify how life has been treating him. If he seems as interested as you are, you may be in business. However, realize that he IS dating someone else. Your conscience will need to wrestle with that. I'd forget about him unless you truly think he is "the one."

If you and your "best friend" were that close, then she'd know how you feel about the guy already. Did you not share that with her? Would you really want to be friends with someone who would poach your love interests? Would she? I suspect the friendship is more shallow that you think. Aren't there enough guys to go around in the world without having to take a "best friend's" leftover boyfriend? It's best to have an honest discussion with your friend. If it were me, I'd definitely ditch the friend and would redouble my efforts to move on from the guy unless I were convinced he was the forever guy.

I have a question I broke up with my ex a year ago and he has a new girlfriend that used to be my bestfriend but we’re still friends I broke up with him because long distance relationship think I was over him and it had been a year now and I can’t stop thinking about him but he is still with her

Rachel - Wish them well in a low key way and cut them both out of your life. They deserve each other. That guy is poison and that gal is not your friend.

Rachel Demere on May 08, 2020:

I like shout out to my ex. My ex was really mean and never talked to me and always told other girls they looked cute and that he was always free and I just froze Everytime and just let him hang out with other girls and just pretended like it never happened. I don't know what to do. I still like him but he is with my bff and they are cute. He doesn't do the things he did to me. But he had also said that I was useless and a lot of other things. He actually left me for his current wife and now has 3 kids.

My husband left me for his ex wife, This was just 2 years of our marriage. The most painful thing as that I was pregnant with our second baby. I actually thought it was over that I lost it all

Rachel200 - Whether you change seats in the current class so that you cannot see him or you transfer out of your class, make the change NOW and ditch this loser. He's wasting your valuable time and disrespecting you. You are worth more than this. Although you may have feelings for him, he doesn't know how to value you in return. The way he is treating you is juvenile and self-serving. Let him go sow his wild oats. It's better to be single than sad and stuck with someone like this. Good luck! Ignore him the best you can.

Rachel200 on August 24, 2019:

My bf wants to get back together, but afer getting back he ignores me ,and flirts with others girls to make me jealous..i know he is not good for me ..but iblove him and i hope he changes..we go to the same classes and there he flirts with other girls..do u think leaving the class and joining other class would be a good idea ..but if i leave the class..i have to face him in college..and that would be embarrassing..i dont know what to do .

Seb - I'm sorry about your heartbreak, but it's really for the best in the long run. This person made a commitment to someone else (his wedding vows). I hope you find someone who is actually free to give his heart away to you. As far as songs, I like "I Miss You" by Klymaxx (1985). There are a TON of songs about missing someone you love: https://spinditty.com/playlists/Missing-You-Playli...

Seb on August 06, 2019:

I met this dude in May 2018, and was immediately attached to him. I hadn’t seen him in a little over than two months after that day, but then starting that August, I saw him everyday until this last May. Through those months, I have grown to adore every aspect of him, and it wasn’t until six months after that I decided to admit my feelings for him to myself, and not until two months after that, that I realized something I wish I didn’t: That I was, in fact, in love with him. It’s everything about him, really. I won’t get into it, but long story short, I won’t see him ever again. The last time we did see each other was really bittersweet, and I miss him more than anything. I think right here is where I should say that he is married and 15 years older. I’ve never made a move or tried or thought about it, it would be completely awful if I did. I’m about to take a big step in my life right now, and I realize that I miss him more than ever. I’ve always missed him around, but right now, I wish I had his support like I always did. I can’t explain the feeling I had when I first met him. Do you have any song recommendations for my situation or something resembling it? :(

My husband left me because I got a new outfit for work. I wanted to feel pretty , for myself, but he got it all wrong and thought I was flirting to some guy from the office.I said NO, but he didn´t believe me, so he asked a "fortune teller" to read the tarot cards for him , and everything was "confirmed", I cried and begged him to believe me, but he decided to believe that woman .I am devastated.

Happy New Year, Dear Flourish!

I'm off for the holiday today and thought I'd pop in to read a bit and see what I've missed ....missed a lot!

You're still the Queen of the great playlists. I do know a lot of these songs, especially the country songs, but I love John Waite's Missing You from so long ago.

I hope to get back to writing here soon. My husband had knee replacement surgery and then just other life issues kept me away.

Peace and blessings always, dear lady

Thanks for adding those, Flourish. So sweet of you. I wish you a joyous holiday as well!!

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on December 07, 2016:

Savvy - Thanks for the great additions. I've included them as 59 & 60. You're right about ruminating about one's ex. While dwelling on the past, one may miss the next great love or underinvest in the current relationship which isn't fair to anyone. I hope you are well. Have a wonderful holiday season!

savvydating on December 06, 2016:

Wonderful Playlist, Flourish! I have two favorites which I would like to contribute:

1) What Hurts The Most by Rascall Flatts

What hurts the most was being so close

And havin' so much to say

And watchin' you walk away.... (Sigh, it gets me every time)

2) Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton

Un-break my heart

Say you'll love me again

Undo this hurt you caused

When you walked out the door...

The only problem is that although a break-up occurred, the person who was left behind still longs for their lover and they're not making much of an effort to get over the ex. Lol.

I haven't heard of any of these songs, but I always appreciate the musical education I get by reading your articles. I'll have to look out for some of the songs that you've described. They sound interesting.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on December 05, 2016:

Don't know any of these songs, but l read through the article and I especially love the quote by Horace. True on many levels and in other situations besides love.

Gypsy Rose Lee from Daytona Beach, Florida on December 05, 2016:

Fascinating list of songs. you know I am an old oldies fan and go into music as far at the 1990s Beyond that they lost me in the change of the century. What is interesting here is that I don't know any of these songs so I'll check them out. A great job on this hub as always.

The interesting thing is that I've never been in this situation... ever. So even though I can't relate personally, I always like your playlists. :) I like "Problem" the best. And thanks for the 80s throwback John Waite's "Missing You." Happy Monday!
