Now is the time to survive Squid Game. Netflix has delivered some great entertainment so far this year, ranging from family fun with The Mitchells vs the Machines to hilarious and heartfelt drama with the latest season of Sex Education. For those with a taste for the more wild side of film and TV, on the other hand, this South Korean survival drama from writer Hwang Dong-hyuk is sure to scratch the itch. We are plunged into a world of insanity when 456 contestants agree to take part in a mysterious game to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. If you lose, however, you lose not just the game but your life. You certainly wouldn’t want to sign up, but there’s no denying that this is one rollercoaster of an offering from the popular streamer. As audiences flock to work through the episodes, many are asking the same thing. Does the old man die in Squid Game? WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SQUID GAME EPISODES 1 – 9
Does the old man die in Squid Game?Yes, the elderly man – or No. 001 – does die. The character is played by Yeong-su Oh and we swiftly learn along with Gi-hun that the old man is suffering from a brain tumor. He hits out at 001, arguing that he should remain home for his family’s sake. However, the elderly gentleman highlights the flaws in Gi-hun’s reasoning, asking him whether his family will be granted the same privilege. When it comes to the first round – Red Light, Green Light – 001 succeeds before any of the other participants. He is then allowed to decide whether the others get to go home and tells Gi-hun that he’s staying with a friend. They two meet up and a friendship begins to form; both return to the sadistic game. As the narrative develops, their bond strengthens and 001 proves instrumental in Gi-hun’s triumph in the Tug of War. By the time the fourth game rolls around, Gi-hun grows concerned that selecting 001 is no longer wise. However, because he has grown to care for him, he chooses him for the team in an effort to ensure the old man’s survival. The game is revealed to be Marbles, and it’s also in this round that 001’s true name is unearthed: Oh Il-nam. He begins to exhibit signs of dementia and is fooled by Gi-hun. We’re led to believe this spells his death when a gun is heard firing.

The final episode sees Gi-hun having won the game a year ago, but he is sent a similar card that sparked the entire ordeal. Curious as to the identity of the sender, he visits the address written on it and is surprised to find the elderly man he thought was long dead. Confined to his bed, it turns out that it was actually Oh Il-nam who made the game. The reason? He and a host of his wealthy peers were betting on the survivors and so forth, further explaining the importance of the numbers. This content could not be loaded
One last roundHis health was no lie though and the dying man makes a final bet with Gi-hun, arguing that a man outside in the freezing cold will remain unsaved by a caring stranger by the time the clock strikes midnight. This is in an effort to reinforce his pessimistic worldview and belief that no good remains in humanity. Gi-hun wins the bet as somebody comes to the man’s aid, but the lesson is lost on Oh Il-nam; he’s already passed. After witnessing so much death and destruction, it’s a welcome moment to end on a note of hope. winning the brutal survival game and the cash prize of £28.2million Gi Hun went home to share the news with his mother but learned she sadly passed while he was away. Understandably he became severely depressed and was even contacted by the back due to a lack of spending. As well as the loss of his mother, Gi Hun was also mourning the loss of the people who died trying to win the cash prize. He then received directions telling him to be at the top floor of an indoor multi-storey car park where he was reunited with Old Man.

finale, fans made the shocking discovery which unveiled the Old man as the founder of the survival games. It was already a shock for viewers to see the Old Man was still alive after he appeared to have died during a game of marbles, while paired with Gi Hun. While on his deathbed, the Old Man explained how and why he came up with the games as well as why he chose to go undercover as a participant. Understandably Gi Hun didn’t see his side as to him, there was no justification for making people play childhood games, which led to death for money. DON'T MISS...
