Sun, sea, sex and… smoking? Er, not quite.

Love Island may seem like an extended holiday for its stars, but they do have to follow some rules.

Now in its eighth series, several contestants have been removed from the villa over the years for breaking rules – which include using appropriate and non-offensive language at all times.

Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed there haven’t been scenes of islanders smoking, as there have been in the show’s earlier series.

So, are they allowed to smoke – and drink alcohol – on the show?

Here’s what we know.

Can Love Island contestants drink alcohol in the villa?

Yes, the Islanders can drink – they all enjoyed a bottle or two of prosecco in the launch episode – but they are limited.

Unlike some reality TV hits (ahem, Geordie Shore), Love Island stars aren’t allowed to get sloshed on the show.

One previous contestant revealed that there’s a two-drink maximum each day, and the type of beverage is carefully considered.

Liana Isadora Van-Riel, who appeared on series two in 2016, told The Sun: ‘You’re allowed one or two drinks a night, either wine or beer, no spirits.’

A spokesperson for the show around the same time said: ‘We provide our islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.’

It appears the islanders sometimes have cocktails – they played a Cocktail Mix-Up game in 2020’s series six.

But that’s why there are no drunken antics on Love Island.

Can Love Island contestants smoke cigarettes or vape?

Cigarette smoking isn’t completely barred on Love Island – but it is restricted.

Early seasons frequently featured islanders smoking together, often having ‘heart to hearts’ or dramatic chats over a ciggie.

But ITV are said to have cracked down on smoking scenes after receiving multiple complaints.

From the 2019 series onwards, islanders are still allowed to smoke – but away from the villa (and the cameras) in a ‘designated smoking area’.

Islanders aren’t allowed to smoke in groups, either, to discourage social smoking – and presumably, so important conversations between contestants can still be shown on screen.

ITV confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the same rules apply to vaping.

What else is banned in the Love Island villa?

Swearing is allowed, but using inappropriate or offensive language is a complete no-go.

Reports also say contestants are discouraged from wandering around the villa nude – as it is seen as a public place, given all the cameras. Yep, even in the shower.

Masturbation is also disallowed – and islanders are said to be given a ‘handbook’ advising them on dos and don’ts for their time on the series, as well as sexual consent.

Love Island 2022 continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and the ITV Hub.

Do Love Island contestants get alcohol

While we secretly want the cast of Love Island to get absolutely sloshed and make terrible decisions, it seems like they never do.

In fact, while they’re constantly raising a glass, they never venture out of sobriety while they’re in the villa. So what are the show’s rules around alcohol?

Here’s everything we know about the Love Island alcohol rules.

The Islanders are subject to a strict two drink limit every night

A big part of the reason for the lack of Geordie Shore-style antics is the two drink limit.

2017 star Eyal told Closer: “It was very, very limited. Max two glasses of wine a night and that’s max!”

It’s a rule that’s been around since at least series two. Liana, who was in the villa for that series, told the Sun: ‘You’re allowed one or two drinks a night.”

However, Amber Gill reckons the rule has been scrapped this year, tweeting: “They are giving these islanders more than two drinks I swear!”

But despite Amber’s observation, a show source told The Sun: “There have been no changes to how much alcohol Islanders can consume this series, and the amount of booze remains limited.”

The Love Island alcohol menu is strictly beer and wine

Spirits are off the menu – understandably – which means no Jägerbombs and no cheeky G&Ts.

But it appears the islanders get a choice between beer and wine. Most go for wine – but this series has seen Danny drinking beers.

Laura Anderson, who appeared on the show in 2017, has said that there would occasionally be a bottle of prosecco or two, but that “you’d be lucky to get half a glass of that.”

The glasses are also pre-poured for them, to keep things on the straight and narrow.

Two beers a night, every night, would take you up to nearly 24 units a week, well over the NHS’s recommendation of just 14 units a week.

The show’s producers say alcohol consumption is “strictly monitored”

A spokesperson said: “We provide our Islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.”

How much alcohol do they drink on Love Island?

Love Island debuted in 2015, with the two-drinks rule first being reported in 2017, a year after contestant Zara Holland was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title for having sex on the show. She later said of the incident: “There was alcohol and it was in the moment.

Are they allowed to drink on Love Island 2022?

Die-hard fans will know that producers impose a strict limit on how much the Islanders can drink while they're in the villa, but they are allowed two glasses of wine a night. But according to Coco, Chyna and Josh, most of the boys decided to shun the alcohol in favour of soft drinks.

Why do they never get drunk on Love Island?

A spokesperson for the show said: “We provide our islanders with all of the necessary precautionary measures and all alcohol consumption is strictly monitored by our production team.” Islanders are also directed away from cameras should they wish to smoke or vape, and must go out one at a time to avoid social smoking.

Do any of the love Islanders smoke?

However, fans may be surprised to learn that 27-year-old Davide Sanclimenti is the only Islander who smokes this season. In a video filmed by Closer, Casa Amor bombshells Chyna Mills, Josh Samuel Le Grove and Coco Lodge spilled the tea on their fellow Islander's smoking habits.
