The protagonist of this heart-warming rom-com, Alice Kinney (Reece Witherspoon), is the daughter of revered film director John Kinney. On a night out celebrating her fortieth birthday with her closest friends, she meets Harry (Pico Alexander), Teddy (Nat Wolff) and George (Jon Rudnitsky). The three filmmakers are newly arrived in LA and set on pitching their short film after a successful film festival. After a very late night out they all end up at Alice's place. Her two daughters, who had stayed at her mother Lillian's (Candice Bergen) that night, arrive early in the morning just in time to find Alice exit her bedroom with young twenty-something Harry. Image courtesy of entertainment One Amused and delighted, her mother invites the three to stay at Alice's guesthouse, claiming it's the right thing to do and that her father would have wanted them to stay. The three young men quickly and with much ease become part of her every day. They fit right in helping with her two little girls, they listen to her problems, encourage her and all seems grand until Isabel (Lola Flanery) and Rosie's (Eden Grace Redfield) father, Austen (Michael Sheen), arrives unannounced. He doesn't like her current living arrangement and sets out to slyly win his family back. Chaos, laughs and tears ensue. There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this film. I was overjoyed that Reece Witherspoon played a character her own age. I loved that the age difference between Harry and Alice was ultimately a non-issue. A talented cast fused with likeable characters kept the plot afloat in places where it fell short. It's, however, a fun film to watch and a ticket well spent. Reece was perfectly cast as Alice, she has a way of making you feel deeply and laugh light-heartedly. I adored little Rosie played by young actress Eden who looks every bit a mini Witherspoon. Michael Sheen was great in the role of Austen, I only wish I could stop the Volturi flashbacks I had every time he smiled. Candice Bergen was brilliant as Lillian but to be fair, when doesn't Murphy Brown kick ass!
