England host familiar rivals Germany in the Nations League on Monday night for their final match before the 2022 Qatar World Cup this November.

Both nations suffered 1-0 losses on Friday evening. With defeat to Italy at San Siro, Gareth Southgate's Three Lions had their relegation from the tournament's top tier confirmed.

Germany finished bottom of the competition's inaugural edition but were spared the ignominy of demotion by a format rejig. Hansi Flick's side won't face the drop this year but did suffer the first loss of the manager's reign at home to the bracket's runaway leaders Hungary.

Here's everything you need to know about the latest iteration of this famous old rivalry.

England team news

Gareth Southgate rejigged his formation for the final 20 minutes against Italy, bringing on Jack Grealish. However, the mercurial midfielder won't be able to show his talents from the start after collecting a suspension-inducing second yellow card during his cameo.

John Stones will be available once again after serving his ban following a red card during England's humiliation against Hungary in June.

Southgate - in stark contrast to widespread public opinion - deemed defeat to Italy "a step in the right direction" and so may not perform a dramatic shuffle of his pack on Monday night.

England Starting 11 (3-4-3): Pope; Walker, Stones, Maguire; James, Bellingham, Rice, Saka; Foden, Kane, Sterling.
Bench: Henderson, Ramsdale, Coady, Tomori, Shaw, Alexander-Arnold, Trippier, Ward-Prowse, Mount, Dier, Bowen, Abraham.

Germany team news

Antonio Rudiger picked up a yellow card against Hungary, earning him a suspension which prevents a return to English soil for the former Chelsea centre-back. The Bayern Munich duo of Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka both tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, forcing them out of the squad for both matches.

Borussia Dortmund's Julian Brandt also departed with cold-like symptoms but tested negative for the virus.

Germany Starting 11 (3-4-3): Ter Stegen; Kehrer, Sule, Ginter; Hofmann, Gundogan, Kimmich, Raum; Muller, Werner, Sane.
Bench: Trapp, Baumann, Musiala, Nmecha, Havertz, Gnabry, Arnold, Gosens, Henrichs, Bella-Kotchap, Schlotterbeck.

For the first time in eight years, England are winless in five matches. The Three Lions have gone more than eight hours of listless football without finding the net from open play and haven't shown a great deal of evidence to suggest an end to either drought.

Germany, however, are hardly the finished article themselves as Flick's side couldn't recover from a desperately poor first half against Hungary. Since the tournament's inception after the last World Cup, Germany have won just three of their 15 Nations League matches.

In a meeting between two sides that have numerous kinks to iron out before November, neither may head to Qatar with a win.

Prediction: England 0-0 Germany

England's 1-0 defeat to Italy on Friday night means relegation from the top tier of the UEFA Nations League, so there's nothing but pride to play for under Wembley's arch on Monday night. Giacomo Raspadori's goal was enough to send Gareth Southgate's side to Group B, but with the World Cup just weeks away, this will be a good chance for the England boss to get one last look at his squad.

With that in mind, Southgate has made just two changes to his side, with John Stones and Luke Shaw coming in for Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka. Jack Grealish misses out completely through suspension, but Three Lions fans will be keen to see Ivan Toney given a chance off the bench ahead of kick-off in Qatar.

Germany's hopes of progressing to the finals ended when they lost at home to Hungary, but Hansi Flick's side are safe from the drop. Ádám Szalai scored the only goal of the game, putting the Magyars on course for an unlikely victory in Group A3. Die Mannschaft dominated possession but didn't have a shot on target until just before half time, with Thomas Müller's equaliser disallowed for offside. Can they sign off with a win here?

Flick has made four changes to the side that lost on Friday, with Thilo Kehrer, Kai Havertz and Nico Schlotterbeck coming in for Toni Rüdiger, Timo Werner and Serge Gnabry, but Jamal Musiala replacing Müller is a real 'here's what you could've won' for the home team. The exciting 19-year-old represented England at various youth levels, but in 2021 switched to the country of his birth.

The big match kicks off at 7.45pm BST today, Monday 26th September, at Wembley. Follow our guide on how to watch an England vs Germany live stream for free wherever you are in the world.
