Prof. A. F. Conradi, entomologist of the state experiment station, presented a paper on the “Status of San Jose Scale in Texas." He gave a short exposition on the life history and economy of the pest, and described its appearance. An outline was given of experimnetal field work against the scale done by his department the past four years.

Last winter over 8,000 trees were sprayed, lime-salt-sulphur wash being used. The scale is known to exist in several localities in the state and the speaker urged that proper measures be taken as soon as possi. ble looking toward its control.

Prof. A. W. Orr, state nursery and orchard inspector, made a general report of his work for the year.

SECOND DAY. The meeting was called to order in the general assembly hall at 8:30 a. m. Dr. T. V. Munson, of Denison, the great breeder and originator of grapes for the south, read a paper on the compar. ative quality of grapes. By actual test with instruments to determine the contents of sugar and of acid many surprising things were learned. Forty va. rieties were so tested; the Concord had the least content of sugar, and Bachman's No. 20, one of Dr. Munson's originations crossed on Delaware, had the most. The task proves to be inaccurate as a guide to the amount of real sweetness in a grape, as the acid present confuses the sense and leads to wrong conclusions,

F. W. Mally and Stanley Watson both spoke on the good results to Texas from the visit of the American Association of Nurserymen to Dallas this spring. Many erroneous ideas of Texas were removed from the minds of the easterners.

G. Onderdonk and Harvey Stiles of South Texas, read valuable papers on the "Outlook for Citrus Fruits in Texas.' It was agreed by both that orange orchards properly cared for will give good crops quite as frequently as will peaches in the most favored portions of the state. The Satsuma withstands 12° above zero without harm, and Degat or other tender sorts rapidly recover from being cut down to the mound by cold.

Mr. Landrum of Hereford gave an interesting talk on "Growing Trees in the Plains Country."

THIRD DAY. E. W. Kirkpatrick, of McKinney. read a very valuable paper on “Pecans," giving the results of a very ex. haustive study of varieties of this nut with a view to establishing a scale of points by which to judge pecans. Size in the nut is of secondary importance The following scoring card for the tree was suggested by the speaker: Productiveness, 40 points; hardiness, 20 points; propagation, 20 points; toughness, 10 points; normal, 10. For the nut: Separation, 30 points; plumpness, 25 points; quality, 20 points; size, 15 points; normal, 5 points; color, 5 points.

Mr. Kirkpatrick described several varieties of pecans, some of which are so large that only 40 are required to weigh a pound. The San Saba nut has excellent quality, thin shell and 63.41 per cent of the weight is solid meat

At the business meeting of the Hor. ticultural Society, C. W. Wood, Swan, Tex., was elected president; John Mc Howell, Weatherford, first vice-presi. dent; G. A. Schattenburg, Boerne, secand vice-president; E. J. Kyle, College Station, secretary-treasurer.

The Nurserymen's Association elected E. W. Kirkpatrick, McKinney, presi. dent; B. L. Adams, Bonham, vice-president; F. W. Mally, Garrison, secretary. treasurer.

NOTES. The marriage of the president of the New Orleans Horticultural Society, P. A. Chopin, to Miss Alma M. Grunewald, the handsome and accomplished daughter of Captain and Mrs. Wm. Grunewald, took place June 27, at 7 p. m., at the home of the bride's parents at Darrow, La. The pretty residence was very artistically decorated with a profusion of wild smilax, asparagus plumosus and white and pink peonies. The ceremony was performed under a canopy made of above mentioned foliage and flowers. Mantles, fireplaces and tables were richly decorated with adiantum, nephrolepis and cut Aowers. Although the affair was a private one many relatives of the bride and groom were present. Jas. A. Newsham represented the Horticultural Society, and presented to the newly married couple in the name of the society a handsome dinner set. Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Chopin will live at 3129 Camp street.

The Following are a few Notes on the Rose

ON'T you know that this is just wbat you have been

Dlooking for? We are booking orders from all the

prominent growers, when are we going to get yours?

if you want to know more about the Rose, write to us for descriptive letter,

Nothing approaches this Rose in color, shape and keeping qualities. As a grower it has everything that can be desired. It has been shown at the leading Flower Shows all over the country. Read what one of the Cincinnati people tells us:

Cincinnati, O., February 13, 1906. MINNEAPOLIS FLORAL Co., Minneapolis, Minn.

GENTLEMEN:-On behalf of our society, I wish to thank you for the splendid exhibit of your new Rose, Miss Kate Moulton, which you sent us. It arrived in splendid condition, and made a great sbowing. It was much admired by the growers, and to the public at large, it was the center of attraction. Our judges allowed it 90 points, and spoke very highly of it. The S. A. F. Medals are not awarded until after our Carnation show which is held on March 10th. At that time, I will inform you the judges' decision on the medals. Thanking you again for your exbibit. I remain,

Respectfully yours, C. J. OHMER, Sec'y. Road what the others say to YOU about it in the Florists' Papers. For Sale by all Leading Dealers, or write us.

Our saving in flowers we cannot accurately determine, but should estimate conservatively 25 per cent.
