The original form of this poem was a protest against pay toilets.

For those who do not remember, there was a time when public toilets in some places had a lock that would only open if you deposited a dime. They were a real pain in the ass (literally) when a person ran out of dimes! If you were having a particularly bad day, you'd be rushing around to get change from people. It could get embarrassing. If you went up to a cashier and asked for a dollar in dimes, you would in effect be declaring to everybody in earshot that you have a brutal case of diarrhea.

People hated those things with a passion and eventually they were removed because the cost of fixing vandalism to pay toilets was greater than the profit, and also because it was easy to defeat the system by blocking the lock with a wad of toilet paper.

Except in the ones that automatically opened the door when your time was up.

The original form of the poem is, in my opinion, much purer of meter and far more meaningful. Here it is:

Here I sit, broken-hearted;
Paid a dime -- and only farted.

Next time I will take a chance:
Save a dime, or shit my pants!

Those aching words have stayed with me
Through the miles and the years.
And sometimes when I think of them
It’s hard to hold back tears.

For a man whose dreams were shattered,
For a man drowned in despair,
For a man who’d reached his limit,
And had no one left to care, he said,

Wonderful print and looked even better in real life. Cook was so helpful and the service was wonderful. I ordered another print straight away as I was so happy. Great colour options and comes beautifully framed (if you choose that option) Great price as well :) Delivered also super fast. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants a gorgeous print that doesn't cost the earth.

Very nice and reflective of price. They are not amazing they just are as described . The frames look good enough in our room and were easy to install as light weight. Nicely packed
