How do you enter Maxim cover girl competition?

Every year, the New York-based magazine gives women around the world the chance to be the next face of Maxim magazine.

This year’s winner will star in a photo shoot in France, get $25,000 in cash, and of course grace the cover of a special edition of the magazine.

After continually seeing ads for the competition on social media, 39-year-old Shawni Jewett decided to take the chance and submit her name for the competition.

“I'm going to be 40 this year and I have not done any kind of modeling of any type for a lot of years,” said Jewett, who explained she used to do a lot of bikini competitions, pageants, and some modeling for Hawaiian Tropic when she was younger.

“But for the last 15, 16, or 17 years I’ve just been married and raising kids.”

Jewett said she was surprised when she was selected to participate and didn’t expect anything of it but is currently in first place in her group.

“There are so many models and influencers and people like that out there, but I looked into some of the past competitions, and I did see that there were quite a few moms entering so I was like, I guess I can do it too.”

Jewett says she has recently separated from her husband and is on a journey of self-discovery and has been picking up hobbies and activities that she used to be involved in.

“I'm turning 40 and I have lots of kids, and I've been really disconnected from that kind of thing for such a long time. I never thought I'd be involved in anything like this ever again,” said Jewett.

“When I saw that there were other women that had kids that were competing, I thought, well, if I do it, somebody else is going to see that. I think it's important for women, moms especially, to kind of go for stuff like this and step outside of that role a little bit and still be your own person, you know?”

The competition also raises awareness and funds for a U.S.-based charity called Homes For Wounded Warriors, which supports building and remodeling handicap-accessible homes to suit the individual needs of injured veterans. 

Jewett said raising money for charity also gave her that little extra push to join the competition because she would also be raising awareness and money for a good cause.

She said she has had a lot of support from friends, family, and those close to her but as the competition advances, she is going to need all the help she can get.

The public has the chance to vote each day for those in the competition and Jewett is currently the first in her category but will need votes every day to keep advancing in the competition.

“Everybody that's already supporting me, I want them to know that I really appreciate it,” said Jewett.

“I thank all my friends and family and everybody. In the next few weeks, things are going to get really intense and I'm going to need as much support as I can get. With every round that I make it through, I still need votes going into August.”

Jewett says she wants to go as far as possible in the competition and would be blown away if she were to get the cover.

“It would be a really fun and good experience and a little bit terrifying. But I think it'd be awesome. Whoever wins is going to have a really good time with that,” said Jewett.

As far as what she would do with the extra $25,000 in cash, Jewett said she would do some renovations on her house and has some big plans for her 40th birthday.

“I’d find myself a really great 40th birthday present and the example that I gave was a Dyson vacuum,” laughed Jewett. “I would also like to take my kids on a trip to Disneyland, maybe something like that.”
