The Hyundai Tucson is totally redesigned from the ground up for model-year 2022. With more Canadians than ever interested in electric or electrified vehicles, models like this are helping drive serious sales growth in hybrid product at Hyundai, by putting hybrid technology exactly where Canadians are shopping for it.

As more hybrids hit the market, more shoppers are getting interested, and search traffic on the 2022 Tucson Hybrid is growing rapidly. Here we’ll answer some of the most commonly-searched questions about the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid a good car?

That depends on what you’re after.

Among comparable crossover SUVs in this price range, it is a strong value for its powertrain smoothness, interior design, and overall driving feel in most situations. It’s also roomier inside than its size and shape lead on. On the downside, I did wish for some more excitement from the driving experience in some situations, and found the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid’s ride quality on rougher road surfaces to be disappointing.

Most shoppers will find it a compelling buy in its segment, thanks in no small part to its advantage in powertrain smoothness and interior design versus a key competitor, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

How does the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid work?

Just like any other crossover.

Hop in, start the hybrid engine, put the vehicle in gear, and drive around as normal. While you do, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid’s engine generates electricity automatically and stores it inside of a battery. The hybrid engine can call on that electricity to help drive the vehicle, or to boost its power output.

By automatically generating and using electricity as you drive around, more of the work of driving the car is handled using less fuel. Performance and throttle response are enhanced, too.

Versus a non-hybrid model, 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid drivers can expect to use less fuel while experiencing higher performance. The workings of the hybrid system are totally automatic, with nothing to get used to and no decisions to make.

Does the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid qualify for a tax credit?

No, it doesn’t — but watch the nomenclature. In Canada, tax credits apply to vehicles with plugs — namely plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and fully Electric Vehicles (EVs).

The Tucson is available in 3 versions. The first is called the Tucson, with a standard gas engine. There’s no tax credit, here.

The second is the Tucson Hybrid, the topic of our story. It’s a hybrid, but not a plug-in hybrid, so there’s no tax credit here, either.

The third is called the Tucson Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV). It has a plug, so a tax credit applies.

Key takeaway above? There are 2 types of hybrids: Hybrids (no rebate), and Plug-In Hybrids (rebate). We’ll cover the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid in a future story.

Does the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid have a spare tire?

Yes, but check first. Some trim grades have a cargo organizer under the rear floor, and use a mobility kit instead of a compact spare tire. Others are listed as offering a compact spare. Some owners have removed the cargo divider and installed their own compact spare tire provisions.

If you have any concerns, ask your sales rep for more information, and remember that new Hyundai models sold in Canada include 5 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assist coverage.

Can the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid tow?

Yes. The Tucson Hybrid can tow up to 2,000 lbs.

How much is a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid?

For 2022, the Hyundai Tucson starts at $27,899, in its ‘Essential’ trim grade.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid starts in the ‘Luxury Hybrid AWD’ trim grade, from $39,099. The top-line Tucson Ultimate Hybrid AWD starts at $41,799.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid AWD?

Yes, all Tucson Hybrid models sold in Canada come with standard AWD. The hybrid engine drives the front wheels, and a rear electric motor is used to power the rear wheels exclusively.

This electrified AWD setup enhances response and agility in slippery conditions, and does away with conventional driveshafts to power the rear wheels.

How does the hybrid work on a Hyundai Tucson?

The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid delivers combined 265 PS of combined power output and an all-electric mode at the push of a button. Once the all-electric range is depleted, the full-parallel hybrid drive system takes over, which means it can run on its petrol engine or electric motor or both. Go as far as you need to.

Is the Hyundai Tucson a self charging hybrid?

The Tucson Hybrid uses regenerative braking to self-charge its 1.49-kWh battery. But you will need to plug the PHEV in to recharge it fully. With a level 2 charger, the battery can be replenished in about two hours. A 7.2kW onboard charger is included.
