How long does it take to drive 6 miles at 60 mph

Congratulations on the new job! Delivery driving is a great way to add some extra wiggle room to your budget—not to mention an opportunity to catch up on podcasts or audiobooks!

How long it takes to drive one mile depends on the rate of speed you’re traveling. To figure out how long a delivery will take you, all you need to do is a little math based on your average speed.

Since the speed you drive is measured in miles per hour (mph), an easy way to estimate travel time is to compare your average speed to a single hour. For example, if you’re driving 60 mph, that means you’ll travel 60 miles in one hour, so it’ll take just one minute to travel one mile.

Here are a few other examples:

  • 15 mph = 1 mile every 4 minutes
  • 30 mph = 1 mile every 2 minutes
  • 45 mph = 1 mile every 1 minute and 22 seconds

Because most roads have a speed limit between 25–60 mph, you can expect to take between 1–2.5 minutes to drive a single mile.

Whatever you do, don’t let the math distract you from the road! And remember, it’s important to have your car properly insured. Get the Jerry app to find the best deals on car insurance coverage.

Jerry will gather quotes from more than 50 top insurance companies like Nationwide and Allstate in minutes. Just download the app for free to get started. The average user saves $887 a year on car insurance.

The only way is up, but you're going to need more than an energy drink if you're going to drive a car on this epic journey into space.

Astronomer Fred Hoyle was the first to point out that if you could drive a car upwards at 95km/h (60mph), it would only take about an hour to get into space.

To get to the Moon would take a little longer though, since it's 400,000km (250,000 miles) away - around 10 times the circumference of the Earth. So it would take as long as driving around the world 10 times - just under six months.

Your only real problem (apart from the lack of air for your lungs and for burning the petrol) would be finding a garage to refuel - and that has a loo!

We saw in the previous section that speed, distance and time are all related.
In this section we look at calculating distances and times using the following formulae:

How long does it take to drive 6 miles at 60 mph

Example Questions

Example Question 1

Jane drives at an average speed of 45 mph on a journey of 135 miles.
How long does the journey take?
To find a time, we need to divide distance by speed.
135 miles 45 mph = 3 hours

Example Question 2

Chris cycles at an average speed of 8 mph.
If he cycles for 6½ hours, how far does he travel?
To find a distance, we need to multiply speed by time.
8 mph 6.5 hours = 52 miles

Example Question 3

Nikki has to travel a total of 351 miles. She travels the first 216 miles in 4 hours.
(a) What is her average speed for the first part of the journey?
To find average speed, we need to divide distance by time.
216 miles 4 hours = 54 mph

Her average speed is the same for the whole of her journey.
(b) How long does the whole journey take?
To find time, we need to divide distance by speed.
351 miles 54 mph = 6.5 hours

Practice Question 1
Jim travels 45 miles at 15 mph.
How long does it take him?

Practice Question 2
Jemimah walks at 4 mph for 2½ hours.
How far does she walk?

Practice Question 3
Jenny drives at a constant speed. In the first three hours she travels 81 miles.
How far will she have travelled after 5 hours?

The time it takes to drive 396 miles at 60 miles per hour (mph) is displayed below in hours, minutes, and seconds:

6 hours
36 minutes
0 seconds

Do you want to know how to calculate how long it takes to drive 396 miles at 60 mph? No problem. Here is how we did it:

1) Find the number of hours by dividing the distance by mph. The number of hours will be to the left of the decimal point:

396 miles / 60 mph
= 6.6
= 6 hours

2) Find the number of minutes by multiplying what is remaining from step 1 by 60 minutes. The minutes will be to the left of the decimal point:

0.6 x 60
= 36.0
= 36 minutes

3) Find the number of seconds by multiplying what is remaining from step 2 by 60 seconds. The seconds will be to the left of the decimal point:
