How long to leave semi permanent hair dye in Reddit

Hello!

So I haven't dyed my hair in a while, although I have in the past. I'm using this vegan semi-permanent hair dye on black hair that's been bleached twice. The bottle recommends that you leave it in for 35 minutes, but I've heard that because it's vegan, you can leave it as long as you care to. Is there any truth to this? Thanks!

You can leave it for as long as you like, but not because it’s vegan. It’s because it doesn’t lighten your hair with bleaching ingredients, it only deposits colour.

Indefinitely-- semipermanent dye is pure pigment in a conditioning base. I've found that the longer you leave it, the more true-to-color your results are and the longer the color lasts, so I leave mine in overnight whenever possible.

What methods do you use to minimize the damage to your pillow/sheets/clothes/skin/walls?

Color stops processing at the 45min mark, you can leave it longer but it won't impact the result nor will this particular color your using damage your hair if you leave it more than that. Wash and rinse in cool water so the cuticle remains closed thus keeping the color in, and use dry shampoo in between to delay washing so the color lasts longer.

That depends on the dye. Im not sure when it stops for arctic fox, but i leave it in for 3 hours and its vibrant and awesome, but when I leave it overnight it is still super vibrant but also lasts longer.

Honestly there’s a point where it won’t deposit any more. 30-45 minutes is generally fine, longer won’t hurt it if you really want to make sure it sticks. It’ll act kind of like a deep conditioner regardless. I’ve noticed that the cream will lose pigment because it deposited on the hair shaft so once the cream looks like it’s lost most of its pigment, it’s probably not going to deposit much more. Obviously this is generally true with the color lines I’ve worked with so there may not be a color change at all in the cream so keep that in mind but the hair can only be saturated so much at one time.

I use Joico semi-permanent dye on the bleached ends of my hair and I usually leave it for at least 2 hours before washing it out. 30 minutes is nowhere near enough time for the color to really take on my hair, and if I'm going through the trouble of dyeing it then I want it to stay for a while. I once left it on for about six hours, thanks to an emergency vet visit right after I put the dye on, and it was fine though I wouldn't do it for that long again.

There's do damaging ingredients in semi-permanent dye. I usually sit 1-2h. 2h is mostly if I forget about it, lol.

Not because its vegan. Its because semi permanent dyes dont have lifting agents in them. Permanent dyes damage hair because it lifts your natural hair color to make it lighter while also depositing color. Semi permanent just deposits color on top of the hair without any chemicals damaging. Its similar to just putting marker on your skin. It stains, but if you dont wash your hands right away it wont hurt you.

As I sit here refreshing my Arctic Fox Aquamarine, I'm curious what other people do. I try to leave mine for 5-6 hours, usually processing with heat on and off for the first 2. That's not always easy for me to schedule, though... a 6 hour block with no chance or need to see another human except my husband, no zoom meetings, errands to run, etc, and when I can also do the entire wash/dry/apply/sit/rinse sequence. Is there a benefit to leaving it in that long or would I get the same result rinsing it after an hour or so? Is it staining harder if I wait? I got that advice from a few people when I started using these colors, just wondering what others do.

I don't bleach and have medium brown hair with maybe 25-30% grey/white. So the effect I get is an all over wash of color and great pops of bright color on the grey.

I’ve been dying my hair for 12 years, have tried everything from 45 minutes to overnight, and I’ve gotta say, I really don’t think I’ve noticed a difference in vibrance or longevity. Just wondering if anyone else has actually noticed a significant difference depending on how long they leave they’re dye in their hair.

How long should I leave semi

Leave the dye to sit for about 15 to 30 minutes, and then rinse out and style as usual. No matter which type of semi-permanent hair dye you use, make sure to carefully follow all directions.

Can you leave hair dye in for 2 hours?

Leaving hair dye for too long may damage your hair. You should only leave most dyes in for 30 to 45 minutes.

Can I leave adore hair dye in overnight?

Most dyes will tell you to leave it in for just an hour, but I've found that that's generally not long enough for the color to apply evenly and last more than one wash. I usually let dye sit in my hair for 2-3 hours, but since I was dumb and applied my dye late at night, I just slept with it in this time.
